CompJet Spectator rules?
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:30:04 PM »
I've been getting more and more interested in comp jet lately.  The last event at long beach i wanted to get up close and really check out the compjets.  My boats just been wicked loose since doing all the work i did to it and one of the things I've been working on is the bottom design and hardware to get it to settle down.  While at long beach on Sunday i got down on my knee's and looked under a boat to check out how the strake design was on it.  One of the guys who i assume was on the pit crew of the next jetboat over said something about getting my head stomped.  I though he was joking at first, and he went on about how the bottoms and intake is a secret, and went on again about head smashing.  After that i kind of looked around for another minute, told one of the racers that he was missing a ride-plate bolt (he didn't know and thanked me for telling him) and then went to check out the other boat classes.

Anyway my point of this topic is to find out if you compjet guys are really worried about people looking at your boats.  I can understand if i was another racer or was under your boat with a ruler, but i was just a spectator that was interested in the class.  The way the guy came off irritated me the more i thought about it and actually made me feel uncomfortable like i shouldn't be looking at the boats.  One of the best parts about going to the races is getting to check out the boats and if you make your spectators feel like they cant do that, well your going to loose fans.

Anyway not trying to talk shit, I'm sure the guy is probably on the site.  Maybe i took what he was saying wrong, maybe not.

For the record, I was there too and don't know of anyone that would have seriously said anything like that, but not saying it is not true...

I can tell you this, secrets? yeah, right, how many different ways do you think there are to make a wheel?

I would be really curious to find out who actually said that, but don't go there.....BTW did he win, spin or break?  ;D

I did not have a boat there and was not racing, but if I were, you could check out anything you wanted on my boat, I would even answer questions if asked....Most of the time I would get "that'll never work" lol

Welcome aboard and sorry for the uncomfortable head stomping comment...Not cool as far as I am concerned...

I am desperately attempting to get my little jet together to go Nostalgia Jet this year....I'm getting closer.

You must have been looking at Ralphs boat.  He worked hard on that boat all night (taking the bimini off and whatnot) so I don't see him giving up any speed secrets.

Seriously though...which boat were you looking at?  I'd have pulled the plug.

There are so many varibles in boats unless he has a carbon copy of what you have would be of any benifit to him. If they are checking you out they must like your ride.
Years ago we would go to a race and one would come in with a six pack, next week so would others and for the most part never helped them at all. Monkey see, Monkey do.

This makes me sick. Whoever said that, joke or not, better check themselves REAL quick. This isnt what the class (or any racing) is about. The fans are what makes this sport tick. Your ass shoulda been down there with him explaining your setup, not threatening to "stomp his head"..

I agree with Brad on this. FWIW it was probably said jokingly as most of the CJ guys are extremely cool

The guy had to be joking. The CJ's Like  spectators looking at the boats. I spend a lot of time answering questions on the boat hardware, engines etc . The CJ 's are a pretty close group, we will work on each others boats so there are not many secrets. Next time your at the races look me up and i will make sure you find out what your looking for.If i don't know i'll find someone who does,                CJ 21

When he first said it i smiled thinking it was a joke, then he went on and on, mentioned the head stomping again.  I know it wasnt just me because other my dad and buddy who were out there with me said somthing afterwords and we all basically though he was serious.  Actually the rest of the day in the pits we all made "You better not do that, you might get your head stomped" jokes when looking around.

The guy i dont think was racing, i think he was helping on the team with that huge jetboat. The guys was a bigger dude himself, actually there's a picture of him in the LB racing thread.  I'm not looking to drag him under the buss or anything i was just curious as to the "RULES".

GT Jets, lol, i thought the same thing.  He was acting like he had some top secret intake or somthing.  Even if he did, if i've learned anything it's that EVERY boat is different and somthing that works for one wont work for another.

Anyway, i enjoyed watching the CJ class, it makes me want to race :)

BTW, i'm the same Shaun from the PB forum

Welcome Shaun,
As far as i'm concerned, bring a tape measure and a camera. You're welcome in my pits any time. If you want to come out and race the R&D guys are more than willing to help you get your boat setup. Actually it's safer for all of us if your boat goes where you point it.

Thanks for great pic Louie

Had to be some anomaly that would say something like that. Pit member/friend of a friend who didn't know any better. These guys all work on each others boats, for christs sake! Not many secrets there, just some friendly smack talk that I have seen.

I've met some, dealt with others, and would trust the ones I haven't had any interaction with whole heartedly, even though I've never been to a race. Want to, but my schedule and situation just will not allow it.

How about a yarn from the past.  It has been mentioned before.  The time we were just starting to develop loaders (we called them scoops) We loaned one to Herold Bruce wrapped in a towel so no one else could see it. He gained a bunch of speed and kicked everyones ass.  We even had an intake cover built for the trailer so no body could have a look see at what we were doing. We were much more secrative back then. We especially had it in for Roger Finney's group (Sleekcraft/Jacuzi vs. Rogers/Berkley), we would actually set up our boat wrong and let them look. The rivalry between Alpha Marine and Nova was realy just in fun but we would hide our trade secrets to help business.

Just to keep everyone comfortable it would always be best to ask to look and to ask a reasonably inteligent question before you keel dive on a stranger's race boat... stoming heads though went out a long time ago.
