Helmet for NJ
« on: March 21, 2008, 03:15:44 PM »
Am I correct that helmets have to be florescent yellow, florescent orange, or international orange for a minimum of the top 50%?

Are you guys running the Bells from Lifeline? Open or closed? If open, do I need goggles or just glasses?

Sorry for all the questions. I read all the APBA stuff but it was pretty vauge about a lot of this.

Bill,

Are you going to be joining us for some circle boat racing? if so, welcome! What boat do you have, motor specs, etc? Looking forward to seeing you out there.

About the rules on helmets...

You can check out the APBA rules here:

http://www.apba-racing.com/Forms/2008/008INBOARD.pdf

About face sheilds/googles/glasses:

3.2 When driving or riding in any racing craft, eye protection in the form of a helmet face shield, goggles or ANSI/OSHA approved safety glasses with restraint straps shall be mandatory.

More on helmets:

3.5 HELMETS
3.5.1 Drivers and riding crew are required to wear helmets at all times while on the water for the purpose of racing or testing. The helmets may be
removed only if the craft is under tow or being held fast in the infi eld by an offi cial tow boat. Violators will be disqualifi ed and suspended for thirty
(30) days. Exceptions may be granted by the referee for unusual situations. All suspensions and exceptions granted must be reported, in writing, to
the Chairman of the Inboard Racing Commission immediately following each incident.
3.5.2 Helmets must meet the specifi cations set forth by any of the following: Department of Transportation, American National Standards Institute, Inc.,
Snell, or military specifi cation helmet designed for military aircraft — Mil-Spec helmets (CGF LA100, LH050, LH150, LH250; Gentex HGU84P) and
Peltor helmets (Rally Pro Helmet EN ECU 04 or 05) are acceptable.
3.5.3 For participants in restraint cockpits, it is recommended that a majority of the helmet be painted with a fl uorescent yellow, red or orange; or
International Orange, color. There is no specifi ed area, but the helmet must be of a bright color so as to be clearly visible in the water.
3.5.4 For unrestrained participants in open cockpits, the upper fi fty percent (50%) of the helmet must be a fl uorescent yellow, red or orange; or
International Orange, color.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the info! Yes, Tim (Loyelyfe) and I are going to try to make it to Burley. We e-mailed back and forth with you a few times in late January/Early February.

I tried to find out as much as I could on the internet, and I printed out all the APBA stuff I could find. But some of it was pretty vauge. So, sorry for all the questions! I'm just trying to figure this out ahead of time as much as possible so I don't show up and look like a big buffoon!

My Boat is a 1985 Cougar 1800SS. It's a splash of the Eliminator 18SS if you're familiar with that boat. I'm running a mild 468 with a Berkeley pump. So, if you guys are all bumping 80, try not to swamp me when you lap me!

Tim's boat is a completely restored '77 Hallet 19 footer running a BBF and Berkeley pump.

Back in the day...I had a Helmet Sponsor and they gave me two, open and closed.  I ended up using the open face almost exclusively but it was modified with a snap on dirt bike cage. I wore Harley laminated glass goggles.  The reason for not using the full face helmet was if I was injured and rescue needed to clear my airway they could do it without taking off my helmet by unsnapping the cage otherwise possibly damaging my neck/spinal cord trying to get the helmet off in the rescue boat.  Also my full face had a pull down screen that when snapped down was a problem if filled with water... damn thing wouldn't drain and I felt like I'd drown.

valid points wizard, that being said i guess its a matter of preference. when i got pitched i'm glad i had my full face as i would have eaten a bunch of water, possibly needing my airway to be cleared. in this pic of tony's crash you can see the visor off the helmet i cant imagine the force it took to rip it off.

so once again i think its a matter of preference
