Want to go racing...
« on: December 15, 2011, 12:00:18 AM »
Well it looks like we are not going to race the car I work on this year due to the owners budget.

I have been wanting to race boats since I got into them 13 years ago.  Now I'm gonna give it a go.  I need help figureing out a few things.  First and foremost is what class I can put my boat and myself in....  Based on the boats I've ran against in the last year or so, I believe mine can go in the high 11s.  Is there a 12 index??  Second is equipment.  I was on The Lucas Oil website today and I went through all thier rules and it looks like the only major thing I need to add is a rope deflector.  Any thing else you guys can think of?

Btw, I live in the SF bay area so I'm planning on the NJBA deal I've seen, since most of the races seem to be in B-field.

Just need a little guidence.  What did you guys learn when you first started, what would you guys tell a new guy to think about or do to be prepared???

                                                     Thanks in advance,  Brian.

On drag racing rules it's best to go to the organization's website (NJBA) but please tell us about your float. Many guys here are circle racers and would love to help if you have the inclination to go for five miles at a time with five or so other boats and make occasional left hand turns. Drags are a good testing ground for straight line speed and acceleration but IMO only get the job half done when trying to get a riverboat up to it's maximum capability like to run hard through chop, get hosed down and not kill the engine, traffic avoidance, keeping your butt in the seat while the boat swaps ends, etc.  Don't get me wrong about purpose built 7 sec drag boats they are amazing but it sounds like your boat fits into the riverboat mold and you might consider Nostalgia or Comp Jet circles.

I've watched a lot NJ and CJ videos.  They look like an absolute blast.  But I gotta be honest,  I don't think its for me right now.  I boat on the Ca. delta a lot and I think thats about all the "big" water I can handle.  Big currents, big boats and big wakes.

About my float...  Its an 80' sanger SuperJet, 18'.  Full interior.  Not sure of the weight.
Its has a 464 BBC. (its an LS6) Its uhhh, warm.  Its should make around 430-450hp.
The pump is a fresher 12JG-A.  Done in 07'.  Not sure of details because I didnt do it.
It has a Place diverter.  The pump is in the stock location, as is the motor.

The best I've had it is 76mph.  I know I have a good bit left in the motor, as I run it very safe.
Nver really played around with a still launch to much, but from 15-60mph it gets after it really good.  So I'm curious to see how it'll do.

Thanks,  Brian.

For the river racer classes and the ET classes you'll be fine. Remove your interior (except for drivers seat of course) and you will need a kill switch with lanyard that will hook up to your vest.  Safety equipment includes long sleeve shirt and long pants ( driving suit preferred), life jacket ( like a lifeline, not a ski vest) and helmet. I think they also require a fire extinguisher. Rope deflector is required.  I'm an old racer from thirty+ years ago so I'm not necessarily up to the current requirements so before you pack up and leave for a race I would get in touch with the NJBA safety inspector tell him your a rooky and tell him what you have.  They love to have new people and will work with you.  For your first race be early so if something's not right you will have time to fix it. you also want as much practice time as you can to start to get the hang of the lights, launch and recovery techniques, check in, sign up and inspection procedures etc. If you have friends that will join you ( at least one to drive the tow rig to and from launch) check with NJBA on memberships required. Have fun and be safe.

You will also need  a throttle stop too. Preferably an adjustable one on the foot pedal so it's easy to access adjust as necessary. If your going to use a diverter to help with bow rise at launch it's also really helplfull to have adjustable up/dn. travel stops on that too. One less thing to try and "get right" while doing the many things in addition to learning the light's etc.
