Finally got to work on the Rogers this weekend
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:32:05 PM »
After letting it sit for a while, I finally got around to working on my Rogers this weekend. I was able to work on her for 2 days straight. I installed a new fuel pump and fuel supply line up to the carburetor. I relocated the water seperator assembly and ran a new braided line from there to the pump. I installed a new in-line fuel filter that can be serviced.  I  Finally got around to installing a new Optima blue battery and I repaired the Dana Marine battery box. Started to clay, buff and wax the gel.  Changed the engine oil and attempted to perform a tune-up when I ran into a major problem once I removed the distributor cap. It appears that the prior owner didn't do such a great job of covering the boat in the rain. The distributor has so much rust in it, that I truly am amazed that the boat runs as good as it does. This week, if I have a chance, I'll remove and teardown the distributor and try to clean it up. I was toying with the idea of running all braided water lines. Instead, I ordered all new blue silicone heater hose from Summit Racing. If that stuff is good enough for police cars, then it's good enough for my Boat.

The gel looks great. How was it before you started?

Wasn't too bad for its age. It had quite a bit of oxidation on it. Some spots felt like a very fine sandpaper. The clay took care of that rather quickly. I was contemplating color sanding it, but decided against it after I saw the results.

Got alot done this weekend. Pulled the distributor and overhauled it. I replaced the magnetic pick-up, rotor and cap. I also replaced the advance springs and I installed a different advance stop bushing. I also installed a new set of spark plugs. After that, I decided to finally pull the jet and take it in for repairs. I'd been putting this off because I was scared of pulling the jet itself and I was also scared of what the rebuilder might find once he got the jet. It turns out that the jet was easy to remove but it's basically garbage  It will need a new impeller, shaft and bowl. The rebuilder recommended I upgrade to a split bowl and have a droop snoot installed. Looks like that's the route that I'm gonna take. It looks like he can hook me up with some good used parts in order to keep the cost down which will be nice. We'll see what he says once he calls me either tomorrow or Tuesday. I cleaned up the driveshaft in the solvent tank and the universal joints appear to be in excellent shape which is pretty good news.

Yes sir...the shift cable is the original & I'll be purchasing a new one this week. However, the steering cable is 5 months old so that stays. The diverter lines are good but there gonna end up being to short for the droop snoot. I'm going to have to replace those as well.

As long as you've gone this far.
You might as well pull the intake, add a ride plate and shoe. :)

Since it is already apart , ask the rebuilder to check the loader bearing.

That would be nice! However, I promised the wife that I'd buy her a new dining room set. Needless to say, the ride plate and shoe are gonna have to wait until next year :(

As good as the rest of the float looks, I think the jacked up dizzy had more to do with the location than anything!  >:D

Good looking work! I'm with Ron though, I'd do the intake mods now. Have the pump shop hide it in the bill from her........ >:D

That pic (blue white stripe on the bow) looks just like my old boat that was a 78 Rogers with a 454, jet. It had a red double stripe (small white stripe in between) above the water line and just below the deck. Is it the same boat? I sold it along time ago when it was stored near the river in Needles Calif.

Just e-mailed some pics of the boat. I've been wanting to find a prior owner as I know nothing about the history of it. Hope it's you!!!

Thanks so much for sending me the pics of the boat back when it was new. I really enjoyed speaking to you earlier. I hope to have it ready by April for its first test run. You're more than welcome to come along when I take it out. Now that I have spoken to you I feel even more motivated to get her done. Hope to meet you soon!

Been steadily workin on the Rogers for the past 3 weeks. My "To Do List" is getting smaller by the day. Only have a few more things to get done by April. Looks like the trailer paint job and brake install will have to wait until next winter.

Good to hear from you again! I've been goin to a shop on Burbank Blvd. and the name is VF sales. Is that the place? Got alot done on the boat in the past two weeks, I'll post up pics later today. Planning on taking her out next month to Castaic to find out if she floats. You're more than welcome to tag along with your Hondo.
