Title: !!!!!!!!!! MORE BOOST !!!!!!!!!!
Post by: 74RogersBubbledeck on October 02, 2012, 05:41:53 PM
Decided to push it. Called Procharger and the next pulley is 13 psi so what the hell let's go with it and see what happens  >:D

At 9 psi and my pump set up the way it is 5200rpm at 85mph (GPS) is about it. If I was turning 6500rpm then the boost increase might not be wise.

The paint on my intercoooler was coming off so I decided to remove it all. I think it looks better now.

Occasionally I would blow my hoses off the system so I went with blue turbo hose and heavy duty clamps.

What kind of BOV do you have? And were is it? And what size pulley do you have?

What's a BOV?  ???

Pulley size is a 3 85. Couldn't tell you anything else about it except the 9psi pulley was a 4 25.

Its a bypass for the blower..we run one in all of our s/c kits we sell, and install,  and that's the answer for the hoes blowing off. Because what happens to the boost when you lift? What kit is it? And that's probably why the pant is coming off your I/C, the air needs to go someplace when your not under boost. You have to think that blower is allllways pumping air.

My hoses were blowing off because they were a quick cheap version I needed last time I made a change. When they came off all I could do was idle, too rich to run without boosted air flow.

Procharger's won't work with any kind of bypass, boosted air flow at all times. I would be surprised if these hoses worked themselves loose.

Is that what they told you.. ha all blowers work with them, I would try one it will lower your IAT ( intake air temp) and with the higher boost level it wont try to bend your throttle blades when you lift off. We use Vortech blowers in our kits,  but we do sell a Procharger setup and we have played around with a few R1-R2 race blowers. That make 17-19 psi,  and they all had bbbig bypass valves.

I'm running a QFT blow through carb, no throttle blades.

Mine is the old style M-3, This is as far as I can go as far as boost is concerned

They didn't tell me this, it's my opinion. I googled the BOV and read about them. I don't see it in my application. Besides my intercooler is fed cold water right from the jet, I don't see the need to try and cool the air more than it is now.

The 9 psi pulley is all you can get from that procharger system? Ive been eye balling this universal procharger kit from vortech and watching your threads. Its a very nice setup.  So if you wanted more than 9 psi what next?  Also i know theres ways of running boost setups without bovs.. in fact bmws updated twin turbo v8s engines have a new design of the compressor wheel that somehow allows them to get rid of the diverter valves. Maybe the procharger has a design similar? But then again most supercharger systems have some sort of bypass valve to stop boost at decel.

The M-3 I have is designed to run between 5 - 12 psi. I bought a pulley from Procharger that is 13 psi. I've had this for about 6 years. Several new and bigger Prochargers have been designed since.

There is a significant difference between an automotive & marine application. My intercooler is water cooled, the automotive set ups I've looked at online are aircooled. Mine will have a much cooler charge simply because I have fresh water running through all the time.

I'm guessing when in a car and you want to slow down you would prefer a quick slow down.

When in a boat at high speed I've been taught never back off completely, always bring it down gently by backing off the throttle. Some guys have told me their experiences of the boat jumping sideways due to the reverse pressure that can happen at the jet suction point. This is why I looked into the jet-a-way and pop off valve. I've decided not to do either because I plan on keeping this at or below 100mph.

The part that I can't figure out is a boat/car or what ever, that blower is pumping air all the time right? Right. Belt is going motor is running . OK ;) so when you are at cruise,  part throttle lets say 10-12 inches at  vacuum 3200rpm were is all that air the blower making going? And I had the computer/tuner Guy up front ( even my boss, were all getting a kick out of the hole deal) look up a M3 prochrger and your right in they don't run a BOV but they only say to run 6-9 psi Max. After that its too small to flow enough cfm and its out of its compressor map, happy spot:)). But still its a cool setup and it sounds cool. And we have a water cooled I/C on the shop trail blazer that makes 800+ at all 4 wheels and oh yea we have a big BOV on that one. And your Carb sounds like a cool deal too,  blade less sweet.

And after you get more boost hit us up when you go out , remember we have that PWC that rips that made with the new blower about 20-22 psi at 87+ on a GPS last time out>:D

I just had a good conversation with a Procharger tech. Typically in a marine application they don't run the BOV due to the lower rpm's we're running. I'm at mid 5k on the rpm's. If I change my set up to get closer to 6500 rpm's then he suggested a BOV would be a necessary addition. If I were to install a BOV now he explained I would be a little sluggish to start and it would take longer to take off. When I have another $10k to buy the heads I want and completely change out and set back the intake, suction housing, shaft, inducer, impeller and oh yea this would be the time for a new gel coat then I'll take a close look at the BOV again.

I love the instant hit I get when I go WOT. The only time I cruise is the first 10 minutes to get the oil temp up. Then it's really slow, wide open for as long as I dare, about 6 to 10 seconds or so. I looked at the time on some video I did and I'm pretty much at max speed in 6 seconds. Then do it all over again and again and again and ...

I'll be at the river for the 21' jet boat extravaganza & race on the weekend of Oct 20. I'm going to break out my Cobra for the afternoon full up jet-o-vator run of about 8 to 10 boats. 5150 Whiteboy knows more about who will be there.

Thanks so much for asking about the BOV in my system that I don't have JBJ  :banghead:

Now I keep looking at applications and wonder if I need to spend the cash I don't want to spend
I don't even want to know what they cost, how much is the Procharger version you install?  :-\

I did miss speak about my QFT blow through carb, of course they have throttle blades I was thinking about standard carbs with the choke blade that I don't have.

I'm still comfortable with my set up. Procharger tech was honest with me about it. I run this boat more like a drag boat than anything else. I'll find out this weekend what it can do.

ive ran a bov/diverter with my procharger on my mustang... and while you may not want one, it is a worthwhile "addition" for longevity to any boosted setup.  When you let off the throttle the blower is still producing boost, the throttle blades close, suddenly the air has nowhere to go.  sure you may have stopped it now with upgraded hoses and t clamps but just think about it from a logical point... door closes... air has nowhere to go.  sudden massive spike in boost.  when my bov wasnt working (vacuum line blew off) i would get surging and it was VERY obvious that something was wrong.

perhaps looking at another setup will help...

I'll run it like it is this weekend and see how it goes. If I blow the boost/vacuum hose to the fuel regulator I'll know what's up.
