496 build
« on: September 19, 2019, 10:06:52 PM »
I am building a 496 for my 18 nordic. Parts I have.  Pro comp 320 heads new no porting. Erson 734 lift solid roller cam. 3500-7600rpm range.  Stainless B impeller.  Crane gold rockers. Forged stroker crank. H beam rods.  Weiand tunnel ram. 14qt Dooley pan.  Parts I need.  454 block 4 bolt. 10.5 to1 forged pistons. Roller lifters & push rods.  750 carbs.  Looking for 650-675 hp.  Am I in the ballpark?   Do I need porting?  Gasket match heads & intake?   Some say its a must.  Some say less than 6-10 hp.  Degree cam?  Needed?   Timing chain or gear drive?  Thanks in advance.  Gonna be a play boat.  Has lots of work done to jet.  Hoping for a 90 mph hot rod.

If you insist on the procomp heads... scrap all the parts that come in them and have a reputable machine shop go completely through them and outfit with decent parts. Not enough info on the cam to really give an opinion. Porting will offer what you are willing to put into them... a half-assed job will net so-so results... a decent job and actually fix the runner locations from core shift can net 50hp or better without going full blown race porting. 650-675hp is attainable on a pump gas 496... and ypu can do it with those heads... just need to sort out your combination and plan.
