Any one know of  a shop in or around Covina that is not a ripp off that does good work that can be trusted on my olds 455  anybody with some info would be great [ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ]

Just make sure whoever does the work knows that it's goin in a boat and the proper oiling mods need to be done . I will assume they know what to do . If everything is done properly that olds should live forever ! Good luck and keep us posted .

A close relative had a real lousy experience with those guys! $13k for a 14.5:1 540 and it spun the main and rod bearings right out of the box. It ran on the water for about 15 minutes and it lost oil pressure. We never even got on it. On teardown, we found that the rear main bearing installed was the wrong bearing, the oil hole in the bearing shell only slightly aligned with the oil hole in the bore. It wiped out the crank and required an align bore. After several calls and being told we installed the engine incorrectly(we dropped the engine in complete minus oil pan and the intake, right out of their shipping box!), they told us it wasn't their problem. We couldn't even get a gasket set out of them!!!

Beware of those guys!

To be perfectly honest I'd beware of all machine shops since I'm sure everbody knows somebody who's had some kind horror story with some machine shop somewhere. If you were to pick a machine shop based on horror stories then I'm sure you'd be up shit creek . I dont think anyone runs a 100% satisfaction guarranteed shop.

The old saying goes . "If you do a good job , they'll tell 5 people . If you do a shitty job , they tell 10 ." Do you homework Woody , I'm sure theres more shops close by .

True dat, although I've had some really good luck with my most recent dealings with Performance Machine in Manteca. Quality work at reasonable prices and generally on time.

I was just following up on a promise I made to Speedomotive about letting anyone thinking of using them know what kind of treatment we got from them.  :)

The only Machine shop I recommend is called Dougans Machine in Riverside (on Limonite between 15 and Van Buren Blvd).  The specialize in performance engine work (no production overhauls any more)

The main thing you need to do (at any shop), is make sure everything you want done is writen down.  Don't leave it up to somebody's memory, because when something didn't get done and there is no documentation your out of luck!

I recommend go in and talk to the guys at a couple shops and pick the one that gives you the best feel (warm and fuzzy  ;D)
