Title: Clicking in a Ford 390 FE
Post by: 1972Challenger on March 28, 2013, 07:53:34 AM
Whats up guys. Its been a while since i have been on here, but my boat is having problems.. Not serious i hope.

During the last time i had my boat out my distributer got lose and went out of timing. Unfortunently i didnt realize this until i parked my boat on a beach and was wiping my engine down. Well after i tried to time the motor by ear, i noticed that when the motor started to heat up it had a wierd clicking noise coming from one of the manifolds or something.. The motor did get warm but not overheating warm.

does anyone have any clue what it could be?  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Logs and snails? ticking could be an exhaust leak. Late timing puts more heat into the exhaust, sounds like in needs somemore advance. Easy to static time a motor on the water if it happens again.

Hope this helps, not a FE guy, btw

Fresh oil or new lifters

Does an FE have an adjustable valve train? Might pull the valve covers and check all the pushrods/rockers/springs.

Not sure if adjustable but if it is you can just adjust if not new oil/ lifter or you can get a longer push rod

No prob if you need help and are local ill swing by after work or somethin let me know and if there not adjustable get studs and guides and change the rockers to adjustable stud mounts if you ever have to surface ur heads this will save you from buyin shims and if they start to tap again you can adjust on the water pretty easily good luck
