Jet Boat Engine Harness Diagrams
« on: December 28, 2007, 06:13:27 PM »
Here are 4 different engine harness diagrams, complete with wire gauge and colors.

Two of them show points ignition w/1 wire and 3 wire alternators.

The other two show HEI ignition w/1 wire and 3 wire alternators.

If you're using an aftermarket ignition such as an MSD, be sure and follow their instructions for wiring the box to the distributor.

If you're using an MSD R2R distributor by itself:
Black = Ground
Red = Ignition Hot & (+) terminal of coil
Orange = Tach Signal & (-) terminal of coil
No ballast resistor required

i think you answered a question i was getting ready to ask, i  have never run an alternator before and am installing a one wire type, i am not running an aux solenoid so the wire would just run to the solenoid on the starter, right??, sorry if this is a dumb question, but i have never run an alternator in my boat before

Yes,  a one wire alternator conects to constant 12v.  The battery cable on the starter solenoid is a good place.  ;D

Yeah you can run it to the point where the positive battery cable connects to the back of the starter....

Or you can connect it direct to the + terminal of the battery if you want also.

However, honestly I highly recommend the aux solenoid for reasons mentioned in my article regarding aux solenoids.

Just go to any auto parts store and buy a solenoid for any Ford truck. Shouldn't be any more than about $20.

you can do it, its just a little tricky.

right click on the image, select propertys. highlight and copy (ctrl + c) the address (url). paste it (ctrl + v) into your web browser address bar......now right click on the image and select 'save as...'

im not sure why it does that, i just havent had the time to look into it.

If you use a Ford solenoid I don't think you want to ground that second small connection, that one usually goes to the coil so it get's voltage while cranking and is hot while the solenoid is energized, the solenoid grounds through the bolts that hold it to the firewall.  There are some solenoids, I usually see them in motorhome applications, that use that for completeing the circuit, but the standard Ford starter solenoid isn't one of them.

No they dont NEED one but it's cheaper to replace one of those $16 parts than a starter .

DESECRATING A CHEV BY RUNNING A FORD PART TO MAKE YOUR CHEV START :screwy:.... FOR THOSE OUT THERE WHO WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO WIRE A SOLENOID THE RIGHEIOUS WAY LIFT THE HOOD ON A FORD CAR OR TRUCK YOU WILL SEE THE POWER SIDE HAS THE BATTERY SIDE ON ONE SIDE AND OTHER SIDE IS THE STARTER SIDE SEPARATION OF POWER FORD HAS WIRED THERE CARS AND TRUCKS THIS WAY FOR OVER 60 YEARS. YOU CAN WIRE YOU STARTER WITH ONE CABLE GOING TO STARTER WITH JUMPER WIRE AT STARTER TO ENERGIZE STARTER NO POWER AT STARTER EXCEPT WHEN SOLENOID IS ENGAGED NO EXTRA WIRE RUNNING TO STARTER. MY CHEV IS WIRED LIKE A CHEV I DON'T DESECRATE A FORD PART TO MAKE MY CHEV START IN MY FLAT BOTTOM IT STARTS WITH ONE PUSH OF STARTER BUTTON.
I new that chev guys where wired strange :banghead: large print easy to read second time :screwy:

So im rewireing the boat today from the dash back and have a question. On the wireing block on the back of the motor there is a wire thats tagged alt. Why would that need to go to the dash? shouldn't that go to a constant 12v like off of the starter solenoid?
