Olds 455 with a problem...
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:13:01 AM »
So Sunday I pulled the motor out of a boat I just picked up and started to tear it done. When I pulled the heads off I found water in 3 of the 8 cylinders. And one of them had so much rust it was ridiculous. Can anyone help me out and tell me how this is possible as well as what can I do to fix this? I have done some research and found some info and it all sounds possible but I am wondering if this engine is gone or can it be fixed. I am assuming this is why the engine would not turn over!

ok, first of all you said alot of rust. has it pitted the cyl walls????  and the pistons will have a # on the top or the under side of them . that indicates how far they have been bored.  really what it boils down to is can the cylinders  be bored out more to remove all of the pits without going into the water jackets! good luck

Have a machine shop check everything out for you,  you cant have pitting in cylinder bores. if rust can be removed by honing great, but keep your eye on piston to wall clearances. WAIT!  I jus noticed u live in Whittier, If u want gimme a call and I'll check your block out for you , no charge , my machine shop is in La Habra  ;)

Thanks I will definitely be calling you...

Here are some pictures that I took on today to show you guys. I included one of the bottom of the engine that I didnt think looked too bad.

Thanks for the help.

Idk if that will clean up  :banghead: I might know of a block if needed and the cause could have been head gaskets cracked cylinder or a cracked head maybe even rain depending on what cylinders it was the firing order is 18436572 if the three bad cylinders are in that order some where could have been rain
