Did it ever run right with the built pump? Also curious if the motor is just tuned wrong, it could just be a couple of thing wrong working against you, I have had four after dinner frosty adult beverages, so may be full of crap, but this has valve timing written all over it, they will idle, rev, start like crap, drink a bunch of fuel and be like Richard Simmons (read; no balls), just my .02c, worth breaking out the dial indicator and a degree wheel...

AT the risk of repeating myself, if you hit 70's with the same engine, then had a better pump built and put in, by TOM, AND changed the timing gears. Where would be the weakest link?

Am I repeating myself?  Dude, check the timing, i'm telling you it's off. Then check the hand hole in the pump, could be a rope in it or something, but I doubt that. Finally, unless you're pushing somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 hp or so, at THAT rpm, the impeller you chose is wrong. But it should still push you well into the 60's.

7000 rpm's on a BBC in my opinion would sound like the second sign when the locusts are coming. Or, more like F1 racing, lol

Could very well be, or not.

Just the basics guy, we're trying to help, not make fun. 1 step at a time and you should have what seems to be to be a 70 mph or better boat. We're just challenging each other right now with the best quips.

Check the cam timing, IMHO, THAT is going to be you culprit. No finger pointing, but I once timed a 340 Chrysler damn near 180 degrees out of phase and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start. Well 7 bent valves and a thousand bucks later, learned my lesson.

Just saying, we all do it.

We need to get a not so SoCal outing together...There are some peeps in the Sac area too, American River?

BTW, don't mean any disrespect, just screwing around...
