bow foam removal
« on: May 19, 2011, 08:14:46 PM »
As many of you know i have a 19ft. Hallett Bubbledeck. My question is about the foam in the bow of my boat. Whether to remove it or not. I really want to remove it so i have a place for storage (lifejackets, horseshoes, first-aid, etc...) right now i have no place for storage. What is your guys opinion on doing this? is it safe to do so? Will it ruin the ridgidity of the bow? And lastly what methods would you guys use to remove the foam? Thanks.

If it were mine I would remove it. I did on my Sanger, but it was just a shit ton of packing peanuts,   yours probably has a/b foam and if i remember correctly Propless had good success with using a pressure washer to remove it. Whatever way you end up using to remove it, I garuntee you it will be a mess

Mine was stiff when working it back and forth on the trailer.
Once I got it on the water and under power, it was amazing!

I think the best suggestion I ever heard was to use an electric weed eater on the foam

Yep,  it makes a HUGE mess !!!    I did have good luck with a pressure washer and a straight shot nozzle on it.  It cut through the foam fairly easy.  Thing is I had the bulkhead out when I did it so it was easy to get at and remove the MESSY wet foam sludge that the pressure washer left as it cut the foam, I wouldn't try it with a bulkhead still there.   If your not removing the bulkhead your best bet would be a tree trimming saw (cut out chunks), or I did hear that a weed eater will chop it up pretty good too (like crewchief mentioned, never tried it though).  Anyway you cut it (pun intended) its a long, nasty, messy, pain in the azz job.

Good luck and post pics for us if you do it.   ;D

it would be nice leaving it but i have zero storage space unless i want to put the lifejackets and everything back by the motor. where do you put all of your stuff if you still have the foam up there? btw i do not have a covered motor.

I don't have a covered motor either. Still enough room for the extra life jackets on top of the foam, and they dont slide around either >:D When kids are in my boat, they ARE wearing their jackets, so I keep 4 of those ugly ass orange ones up front on the foam. Just for extras.  The throwable I usually keep on the passenger side front floor, easy to get to, and easy on the feet of whoever is sitting shotgun. The fire exstingusher is on the stringer, the paddle is on the floor or up front on the foam. The ice chest for the boat sodas in between the seats. What else do ya need?  Oh crap I keep forgeting about a horn or whistle of some sort, then I be totaly legal :o

the foam in mine goes from the hull to the deck. not a bit of room to slide anything on top of the foam. so either my jackets go back by the motor or on the floor up by the seats.

Why not just cut out an area big enough for jackets, a cubby hole if you will ???   But if I know these guys, they want to see some pics of you going through hell trying to get the whole mees out, LOL  >:D >:D

it is actually pretty tough stuff. soft enough to shove that drywall saw through but it was a pain in the a$$. getting easier though. alot of it breaks clean off of the glass so i think i will only have minimal scraping to do once all the big stuff is out. (probably just jinxed myself). gonna save the shop vac til the end for the clean up. and your right i think luck was all it was.

maybe a sawzall would be your friend for getting the bigger stuff? I got a couple of them with long blades...maybe you can borrow one from someone and make quick work of it...what i would do is probably make the hole bigger, and early in the morning get my ass in there and goto town, and when it gets to miserable to stand i would call it quits for the day...of course this is coming from someone that paid a kid 5 bucks to crawl under the bow's of one of my boats with 2 wires for the bow light lol
