Berk JE-A nozzle O-ring question
« on: October 16, 2011, 06:29:44 PM »
I have an "84" Berkeley JE-A, that has no O-ring on the nozzle at all. I thought it was just missing at first, but after tearing it apart, there is no groove, or any provisions of any kind for an O-ring. There seems to be alot of water getting out around the nozzle-as viewed by hanging off the back of the boat at speed, and when short line skiing behind the boat. Is this just part of the deal with a JE pump? Or am I missing something. There is a video of the boat on YouTube under "baja jet boat fly by" that shows the roost with the diverter about 3/4 of the way up. The water flow is not as "directed" as some that I have seen, and seems to have alot of thrust kind of going all over the place. Maybe it is OK, but let me know what you think.  Other than that, the pump could use a rebuild pretty bad, but I just haven't done it yet. The boat performs OK, but the worn pump shows up when pulling up skiers.

Is this a Place diverter or another brand? I had one JE and worked on another recently. BOTH original nozzles had o-rings, and BOTH Place diverter installs had O-rings. Just checked in the garage, still have both original nozzles here.  :screwy:

As far as I know, the nozzle is stock Berkeley. It looks exactly like the the ones in the Berkeley website parts diagrams. I have seen nozzles with the groove for the O-ring, but mine definitly dose not have one.--A groove, or O-ring. I have heard that some models have one, and others don't.??? Mine is an "84" so maybe by that time they changed the design from earlier years??
ALSO, I think "trim" was an option on the JE pump, and the  JF trim parts were an ad-on to the  JE?  My pump is clearly labled as a JE-A, the BERK website shows what mine has for "trim" gear on the JF parts breakdown.

After looking at several other posts on pump ID, I am starting to think I have a pump that was put togther from parts of at least 2 pumps. As I said, the "front" part of the pump is clearly labled as an JE-A, but the rear end seems to be JF parts? Sorry for not having any pics, but I can't load them onto this website. The youtube vid only shows the boat going by, so other than seeing the spray pattern, that is no help. I guess the long and short of it is that the boat runs pretty well, but I would like it to be a bit better, so if I am wasting thrust by it getting out around the outside of the nozzle, that seems like a good place to start looking for better performance.
