Need some help with a thrust bearing.
« on: September 03, 2011, 08:15:24 PM »
Hello. I'm wondering if anyone can give me a few pointers on removing a thrust bearing. I've got the engine out, and am down to the bearing but cant quite figure out out how to get it out. I removed the circlip and am just stuck there.

Thanks ahead of time for some input!

If we are talkin' Berkeley, you have a bit more work to do.

Pull the bowl, then the impeller. The bearing will come out of the housing with the shaft as it is knocked forward, then the bearing can be pressed off the shaft.

Reassembly will involve the packings and other minor issues.

To get the new bearing on the shaft, I use a heat gun (have been known to use a toaster oven) to warm the bearing to about 250*F and slide it on to the cleaned shaft with a few drops of oil to keeps things slick. Remember to immediately install the snap ring...

Hope this helps.

If i get some free time tonight at work, ill play with it and post it for everyone to see.

Time to man up and yank it John!  :banghead:

Thanks for the help. I thought it seemed like it was too easy to get to that bearing. While I've got it apart are there any red flags I should keep an eye open for? I've only had this boat out for a few hours, and it ran horribly. It took on water while running/moving, but not while off/docked. I got it running good enough for now but there is a deep vibration and loud noise coming from the jet. A few people mentioned the thrust bearing, hbar, and debris in the impeller.

With the engine detatched I can turn the shaft easily by hand, and there is a slight "grind" for lack of better term that I can feel. I guess it feels kind of rough more than an actual grind.. It seems to be coming from a bit farther back than the thrust bearing, but not quite to the impeller.

The hbar seems okay, and the impeller did not have any debris in it.. it does have some wear, but It should last for a while.

Anyway, I'm just throwing some things out here hoping it might ring a bell with someone.

Thanks again for the help,
-Kory

Kory,

Once you get the bowl off, you will want to inspect/replace the bowl bearings and also check the shaft and wear ring for excessive clearance. There is a chance the shaft is "wobbling" for lack of a better term that is causing the impeller to dance all over the wear ring. They make a hell of a rattle.

Good luck, IMHO this is a perfect time to go through the pump and install a new impeller and matching wear ring to get the tolerances back to spec. and get all the bearings, seals and packing parts replaced. It will be like a new pump and you wont have to dick with it for a while.

Good luck

Thanks! That is what I am headed for I think. I thought I could just pull the engine and replace the thrust bearing, but knowing how stuff usually works out, I think I'm going to get one of the overhaul kits and freshen the whole thing up.

How do you get the bowl off.. It looks like the transom plate must be removed to do this. I don't want to mess anything up so I'm going really slow and going to ask a whole lotta questions before I turn the wrench. Also, is there any kind of gear oil or anything that I should be aware of before I pull the bowl loose?

If anybody knows of an online walkthrough for rebuilding a berkeley please post a link or point me in the right direction. I've only found the drawings on the Berkeley site to work from.

Thanks again!

The transom plate should be removed, there are some 1/4X20 through bolts an potentially as many as four wood screws that need to be pulled, in the area where the pump goes through there will either be an o-ring, or silicone sealant or both that needs to be dealt with, quite frankly the easiest way to deal with the silicone is either a utility knife or pushing through some piano wire and cutting it. Be careful here because sometimes people use RTV silicone or worse, elastomeric silicone to seal the adapter to the transom. Use care as to not pull the gel coat from the boat. Many times a little heat on the aluminum parts does the trick. 8)

Once the adapter is off, it is quite obvious how to get the bowl off. As for the oil, they only hold a very small amount, so a piece of cardboard under the back of the boat should to the trick as far as keeping the mess under control..... ;)

Nothing wrong with asking a bunch of questions, IMHO a 5 minute question on here could save you hours of work....

Thanks again! I think my last 2 questions here are.. Does the transom housing come off before the bowl, and is the bowl end cap forward or reverse threaded. Mine looks like a giant tapered flathead screw, and it is really on there good. I don't want to bang on it unless I know which way to go. Not even sure if it needs to come off.

Thanks for your help on all of this.

The adapter comes off first, this makes it easier to get the bowl bolts out.  ;)

Right hand thread.
It does not need to be removed.......Yet.  :sly:

What is the adapter??? Is this the piece that is sealed with a large "o-ring"... basically the piece you are looking at when you look into the backside of the bowl?

The center parts there are rusted, and the bowl bearings.. more like sleeves.. are loose, and one came out by hand. I can see that there is a space inside.. so I am assuming that the bowl bolt are in there.. right? The end of the shaft has a little bit of wear on it.. I hope this is normal, and not going to need to be replaced to!

I found some info that said to remove the wear-ring, heat it with a torch.. should I do this to also get into the bowl?

Thanks!
