File a tiny bit off the outer perimeter of the Teflon O-ring in your third picture.  the issue is the powder coat inside the ball-socket and O-ring groove adds unwanted thickness, creating the interference you're experiencing.

hi everyone,
just purchased my 'forever' boat last weekend out of Boise Idaho, from the son of the original owner. It's a 1979 Hallett 19' Bubbbledeck c/w 454ci 333hp Berkeley 12JC pump all original (unmolested). She was purchased @ ETCO Marine in Visalia CA in '79' and I have the original invoice. The son inherited the boat 2 years ago and confessed 'he's just not into it', even though growing up skiing behind it   :-\ ??
Well... I am so proud to be the 'next' owner!!
The pump was rebuilt in 2012 at Champion Marine, Canoga Park, CA (i have that invoice too). Now I have to 'shake her down' in the next few weeks, as the son has not got her wet since 2017.
This is like a 'barn find' to me and I feel blessed!
Here's a couple picture from the drive home @ Massacre Rocks State Park, ID.

Awesome find, Enjoy...
