Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Tahiti 454 engine specs
« on: November 22, 2017, 04:28:54 PM »
I'm looking at a 1978 tahiti with a gm 454. The motor is suspose to be factory. It's a 4 hour drive and the guy doesn't want to pull the covers for the head numbers. Did these come with oval or rectangle head ports?

I have a similar year boat with a 454. It has the large oval ports (not peanut heads). I'm not an expert by any means but I'd probably take the leap and assume you are dealing with the same and don't have the rectangle port heads. Hopefully someone with a Tahiti can chime in. If you don't get hits here try the SCJB Facebook group, guys are really responsive there if you need a quick answer.

Hulls / Re: Info on solution boats please
« on: November 17, 2017, 04:18:44 PM »
Hello I am new to the forum and Iíve had this boat for 2 years and Iím looking for any information on the solution Hull good bad itís a 1985 anything would help it seems to be a solid heavy laid up hull full stringer big block Chevy dominator pump Iíve been trying to get insurance and no one can find a value for it so any info would be great thank you guys really cool stuff and lots of info about jet boats on here so Iím hoping one of you guys knows something about it thanks

#1 - Clean looking float.

#2 - Here is some pretty solid information on Solution Boats, including the contact information for the owner of Solution: http://www.performanceboats.com/jet-boats/107737-any-one-herd-solution-jet-boats.html

#3 - In terms of insurance, you need to call Nikki Kincaid. https://www.socaljetboats.com/boat-insurance/

If you are dealing with anyone else you are dealing with the wrong insurance agent. I purchased an old barn find of a boat, put a ton of money into it with O/T headers and have it insured for its now fair market value (high end).... no issues whatsoever for a ridiculously low premium.

Check out Walmart.com as well, the website will have a lot more options and they offer free 2-day shipping on quite a few products since they are trying to compete with Amazon.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Carb issues
« on: October 03, 2017, 01:33:54 PM »

My phone was acting up yesterday couldnít really type, but after the boat acted up again on Friday, mechanic came and put another carb on, it was off his boat, it was a 950 double pumper, def too much carb for motor but idea was to try and isolate problem, boat ran great all Saturday, I mean it bogged down lil at 43-4500 rpm n ran rich but it fired up every time right away and never flooded, so the problem appears to b in my carb, so after all that u still think I should mention the metering block gaskets? Or anything else? I really appreciate all ur guys opinions n help... Iím sooooo close to having a top shape running and looking boat after wayyyyyy more cash than Iíd like to remember but the kids love it so screw it right! Lol I gotta put some pics up, completely redid interior, motor, jet, transom, stereo, etc etc etc lol

After all that work just bite the bullet and buy a new carb. Spend a lot less time worrying about shit and enjoy the rest of the season.

I think it's that console that helped it get that fast... chit he could be on top of the top 10 list if he just pushed the pedal more...

Coupled with that chain link steering wheel (which is highly aerodynamic) probably makes it an honest 145 mph boat.

Jet Pumps / Re: Dripping water - Berkeley
« on: August 23, 2017, 08:55:02 AM »
Yes about a drop per minute is recommended I like to have mine drip just a bit faster then that if you over tighten the nuts you will burn them up the official name for them is packing glands. Also make sure you tighten both nuts evenly .

1977 Challenger

Right on, thank you for the information fellas.

Thats your rope seals, you want slow drops of water coming in from there, if its leaking with a steady flow of water, then tighten up the nut on either side just enough for water to drip evey few seconds, im sure someone on the board will explain it better

Thanks for the info, so it looks like I just need to snug those nuts up a bit to get the desired one drip per minute? In the event it does not fix the issue , which I am sure it will, I will need to rebuild which will likely be done at the end of this season anyways by Place Diverter when I get some other pump work done.

Jet Pumps / Dripping water - Berkeley
« on: August 22, 2017, 10:50:57 AM »
Noticed there was some dripping water at my pump shaft below the zerk fitting when I dropped my boat in the water and when on the beach from the area as shown within the attached pic. Was not leaking when running from what I could tell. I haven't greased that fitting in a few trips. Do I just need to add grease or is there a bigger issue? Boat will be coming home if need be so trying to plan accordingly. Any help is appreciated

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Fuel tank and flip top question.
« on: August 16, 2017, 08:32:48 AM »
Gas within your tanks expands with the outside temperature which is causing your issue. Do as stated above and only fill up right before you drop your boat in the water, run it a bit after launch and you will be kosher.

The Comp Jet class if my favorite to watch, I might be a little bias though! I'm not sure what time they run, it depends on how the day goes.

This is directly from the event's facebook page: Parking is $20. Daily admission $20 adults/$10 children/under 5 Free. Military Free with active I.D. No outside alcohol-Coolers will be checked. Beer garden on site.

Thanks for the info, probably swing by on Sunday.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Water in cylinders?
« on: July 31, 2017, 05:35:57 PM »
So after spending several days, pulling my Panther Jet Drive in order to change out the steering cable and shift cable, I hooked up a new fuel line with a new Fuel Water Separator, hooked up my hose to the water system and went to crank the motor.

It was locked up? I turned off the water, pulled the plugs and cranked it over, to see a sprinkler system shooting water out of a few cylinders?

I had no issues with this before? Did I put to much water pressure? Stuck exhaust valve? Blown Head gasket? Please tell me it's something simple and it can be fixed with out pulling the engine apart?

Looking for an advice

You should always start your boat before turning on the water. Sounds like you hydrolocked your engine. I'm not an expert in this area and I am sure someone else will chime in as to what your next steps will be.

Some more helpful info will be when did this occur and how long has it been sitting after this occurred?

Jet Pumps / Re: Berkeley 12JC bowl oil
« on: July 27, 2017, 04:48:13 PM »
It very well could have grease instead of oil. My pump is packed with grease in lieu of gear oil. Stick something in there and see if it is packed full of grease.

20-50 with a high zinc content. Most modern oil doesn't have enough zinc needed for flat tappet cams. This is what I use.
