Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Spark plugs for 460 ford.
« on: June 02, 2019, 09:58:29 PM »
Looking for recommendations on what you big block ford guys run for plugs. Broke motor in on autolite 45 plugs, looking for what plug you guys recommend for my regular plugs. Itís a 9:8:1 compression, ported dove heads, edelbrock performer manifold, 850 quickfuel carb, custom ground cam about same specs as the stage 2 comp extreme marine cam, and msd distributor and coil.

AP25 for me

Couldnít hurt. Just get to TDC again and mark the shaft and #1 rotor location with a sharpy before removing it.

I kept messing with the timing .. Iím thinking of getting new rotor and cap maybe it intermittent works.

Is it weird or am I one off from cylinder one but with the spark plug out of cylinder 1 the engine wants to start up ?

Iím pretty sure Iím at TDC on the compression stroke but could be wrong. Using thumb method and I see piston at top ... insert distributor facing cylinder 1 . Anything else Iím missing?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / 460 help

Whatís going on good people Iím having troubles starting the boat up. Replaced Intake manifold and carb over the winter with a new fuel regulator . Took out distributor without marking 🤦🏽‍♂️ location. Seems like engine is not getting enough fuel or spark. Maybe timing? Can anyone chime in with some help.

Also is the way I have my fuel regulator correct ??

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Timing cover
« on: October 29, 2018, 04:35:57 PM »
No, that is not a cause for your milky oil and as far as that corrosion goes the cover is suitable for continued use. That hole is common and the water just fills a dead cavity in the front of the cyliner block.

Your milky oil could be a lot of things, including even simple collection of condensation that needs to be boiled off.

More often than not, water can leak into the lifter valley by way of pushing past the intake manifold gaskets during high water pressure (induced by a jet pump in a jet boat engine's cooling system). There are other possibilities, but check there first.

Thanks for the input, replaced head gaskets and intake manifold gasket, along with a weiand stealth intake, whatís the best way to boil off the condensation ? What is a good temp to run ? And how long should i be running the boat? Sometimes Iím only running it short trips A to B around lake.

Yep. Coolant passage just below there. Oil/water (murky) mix = milky.

EGR and or coolant passages. With the build it may not have been reaching operating temp. Plugged those to warm engine better. More fuel economy and power. If ran in cool water conditions this would make sense.

Are the back ports of weiand hi tunnel ram usually plugged in the back ports? Looks like itís JB welded! Is there a reason why it would be plugged?

i would not put silicone on my head gaskets, if the heads and block are not warped you dont need it...those head bolts have a hight torque, 100 pounds or so if i remember rite?.. that being said look at the timing cover very close,

Put a thin layer of black silicone around all the water jackets on the block under the head gasket and again on the top of the head gasket so it seats well to the head surface.  Also on the water jackets on the head where it mates to the intake

Appreciate the advice! The head gasket I have on now our felpro permatorque mls is there a recommended head gasket or can I just reorder the same one from before? Once again thanks for taking the time to respond!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Question?
« on: October 16, 2018, 06:32:31 PM »
I have a 460BBF that has been getting a little milky.. since itís winter time I decided to replace head gaskets and Intake gaskets. After removing heads checked the head gaskets and didnít notice too much damage but was wondering if you can get water from the head bolt areas or any other spots? Noticed water in back of block and milky in the head stud threads, Or am I just taking in too much pressure? Iím regulated with a gate valve from pump and I have a gate valve for headers thatís usually slightly cracked. Does anything in these pictures jump out to any of you as a problem?

Running wet headers? T valve? Gate valve? How much water coming through headers at idle?

Sent from my LG-TP450 using SoCal Jet Boats mobile app

Running wet headers yes no water at idle only when boat is going and I have a t valve and gate valve ... Hull is 78 Tahiti with a jacuzzi wj with diverter.... I just remember as a kid my uncle had a older Sanger with a 351 and it seemed to run all day with no problems and seemed pretty reliable...  is a tunnel ram and double carb needed or smaller intake with single carb good enough? Sorry for being a rook owning is new to me but been raised on the lake and love to wrench on things!!

Should I change anything or make any adjustments??

I'd replace it with a regular hex head. Too tight.
It almost looks like it had a hole in the tube and was welded.

Thanks for all the advice. Finally got it off with a wrench I cut. Replaced with a hex head and boat is up and running again. Thank you again to everyone who chimes in.

Can you maneuver a box end wrench around it?

Did the pipe get bent back towards the bolt?

Yeah tried box end too thick...pipe a little bent from previous owner...I found a thin box end that Iím going to cut and modify and hopefully that works...

Canít find anything skinny enough to remove it... any suggestions you guys have so I can finish this up this weekend??
