SoCal Lakes / Quick question...
« on: April 03, 2018, 05:54:59 PM »
Hey guys! I was going to take the boat out to lake perris in 2 weeks. Was planning on bringing my 2 dogs with the family. After reading their site it says no dogs allowed on the beach. Dogs are allowed in the boat but not in the water. I was hoping to find a local lake that we can take the dogs with us so they can play in the water. Can anybody steer me in the right direction? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Outboards / Re: Outboard help
« on: March 22, 2018, 08:48:26 AM »
I'm not an expert but I grew up on an outboard boat. To the best of my knowledge those motors are tuned pretty well for both performance and reliability right out of the box. You will end up spending a bunch of money and getting little return in horsepower. The best advice I can give is to sell your motor and put that money and the money you were going to spend in tuning into a bigger motor. In the long run it will cost you less and you also still get the reliability. 😎

No tach is set correctly 1 is 4 cylinder 2 is 6 and 3 is 8 4 is 10 pole setting

Oh ok that makes sense.

On the picture if the back of the tach it looks like it is set to 3 and my guess is it should be set to 4. I'm sure GT can let us know but I would try that simple change before diving in further...

My tach is reading incorrectly, based on the high RPMs that I'm seeing that don't line up with the impeller and horsepower curve.  My tach is showing 4800 RPM at full throttle but I'm running a heritage AA impeller with a 325HP BBC.

So, where do I start?  Re-wiring?  Replace the tach?
Might be a tach issue but if not this may help you...

Trailers / Re: Chinese wheel bearings?

Trailers / Chinese wheel bearings?
« on: March 14, 2018, 03:01:33 PM »
I am replacing the wheel bearings on a trailer I just bought. The bearings that came out are koyo brand made in the USA.  I was looking online and all I see is bearings that are made in China. Is there a big difference in quality here? Does anyone have experience with these Chinese made bearings? Where can I go to buy USA made bearing kits? Any help or info on this subject is greatly appreciated!

Jet Pumps / Re: Ever seen one this bad?
« on: January 30, 2018, 05:49:44 PM »
Update: today I made quick work out of the impeller nut and impeller. Impeller nut came off with the help of an impact wrench and the impeller came off with just my hands and elbow grease.

It's actually a 4.3 gs which I think has 205 hp. Boat cruises at 4200 rpm(about 3/4 throttle) and goes 27 mph(gps) at that rpm assuming the tach is correct. I also had 800 lbs of passengers, half tank of gas and we were headed up river. I'm hoping the rebuild will translate into some better performance.

look for a letter stamped on it. Maybe a *b* cut? Hows the bowl? Danl
The bowl looks fine. The impeller is stamped with "A" but I was told it was likely cut down to a "B" or "C" cut. It's powered by a volvo 4.3 litre so not a ton of power for a big impeller cut. Boat accelerates like a snail so I am hoping a new impeller and pump rebuild will help.

So I started my pump rebuild project today and I thought some of you may get a kick out of this. I just bought the boat and was trying to figure out why it was so slow. I think I figured it out... Pics below are of my impeller hahaha!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Starter sound like it needs a shim?
« on: December 12, 2017, 03:53:02 PM »
Hey fellas! Was having issues with my starter making noises so i pulled it off and found one of the bolts was broken. Got new starter bolts and had the starter tested at AutoZone and they said it's fine. I put it back on and it's still making the noise. Does this sound like it might need to be shimmed?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Re: Marine motor parts
« on: December 08, 2017, 06:45:51 AM »
If it was me I would still use marine parts. To my knowledge marine parts are not supposed to cause any spark but they are also built to help prevent corrosion, deterioration and all those fun things that happen when you mix metal and water. I don't know about you but the last thing I want is a broken boat in the middle of the water. Anyways just my $.02.

Jet Pumps / Re: Impeller damage too much to fix?
« on: December 07, 2017, 08:13:42 PM »
Doesn't really look bad at all.  We repair those all the time.

As stated, it really needs to come out to be inspected.  Chances are, the bowl has some dings also.

Equally important is the wear ring clearance.  The diameter on the front of the impeller should be 7.225 and the wear ring ID should be 7.250
Thanks guys I appreciate all the input! Hey Flusher... How much do you charge to fix an impeller like mine?

Jet Pumps / Impeller damage too much to fix?

I was checking out the impeller in a boat I recently bought and it looks pretty banged up. I was hoping someone could tell me if this could be repaired or if I need to buy a new one. Thanks guys!

Can u pull it off and take a pic or 2 so I can show him it ? If he does just ship it to me and I will ship it to u

Absolutely! I'll probably have time to take it off tomorrow. I'll take some pics and send them your way.

I'm pretty sure the starter that is currently on there is not the right one. Just bought the boat. Third pic is of the starter on there now. I've never seen a starter with 3 holes like that and only one bolt holding it on. Pretty sure mine is supposed to have the staggered bolt setup.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / What's with the price gap for starters?!?!
« on: November 30, 2017, 04:19:01 PM »
So I'm in the process of replacing the starter on my 4.3 volvo. I know I need to use a marine starter so I go online and search and come up with several options in the $50-$75 range that all say they are marine starters. When I call my local shop they quoted me $250 for a marine starter. That's a huuuuge price gap... So are the ones I am finding online not really marine starters? or is the shop stacking huge profit margins? Can anybody fill me in here? I want a decent marine starter for my application but I would also like to save $200 if possible. Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated 😁👍😎

Jet Pumps / Re: Looking for volvo pump info or manual
« on: November 27, 2017, 06:26:41 PM »

Looks VERY similar to a Berkeley JC bowl, with Place Diverter.

The long ass bolt on the steering HAS to go. The tiny bolts for adjusting the ride plate gotta go too.

Just my $0.02

Dan'l

Yeah I already got a replacement for the steering bolt. Which of the other 2 are you referring too? The ones that connect to the bowl towards the end of the ride plate or the other 2 that seem to connect to nothing?

First, pull it apart.

Likely the leading edges of the impeller are trashed.

«heck The wear ring to impeller skirt gap.

If it's aluminum, it's probably scrap, stainless can be repaired,  to a certain extent.

Tom at Jet boat performance would know what impeller it needs. Possibly CP Performance, too.

Good luck

Dan'l
Much appreciated good sir! I have never taken apart a pump before so am I correct in assuming I need new bushings/seals for when I put it back together?
