Engine Mechanical / Electrical / looking for engine set up info
« on: June 13, 2019, 07:34:46 AM »
im planning on building another bbc motor, but am looking for some useful information for this build.
Boat: 76 eliminator 18ft with Berkeley jg pump
engine block: 454
I want my boat to be able to do 70+mph
the info im looking for is:
* do I bore and stroke the motor or leave it std with higher comp pistons
* where does the hp/tq peak need to be in rpm for optimal performance?
im just looking for some helpful info to get me in the right direction. in my head I have planned to go 496 w/ 10.1 comp hyd roller cam brodix heads and 950cfm dp carb.
thanks for any helpful insight

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / N/a or blower?
« on: July 01, 2018, 12:00:59 PM »
The hull is a 76 eliminator bubble deck! What are your guys thoughts? I donít want to spend a shit load of money. I was thinking of dropping in blueprints 632ci n/a from summit, itís claimed 815hp. Or do I add a blower to the current 454 motor thats in the boat and call it a day? What are your guys thoughts?

« on: December 21, 2017, 06:52:40 PM »
While i have the pump apart and filing the dings on the impeller, is there a right way or wrong to file the vains on the bowl? And how do you know if the bowl is no good any more? Is there a chart somewhere that explains any of this? Any help would be great, thanks

Engines / Engine Parts For Sale / Forward / reverse lever help
« on: August 22, 2017, 10:49:57 AM »
I have noticed that the forward/reverse lever while in the forward position moves into neutral as i hit the throttle pedal, so i have been using my leg to hold it forward lol, my question is, is it a worn out cable that's causing this,  or bad/ loose bushings? 76 eliminator bubble deck, with droop snoot and old style place diverter. Any thoughts or suggestions thanks

Im thinking its a valve issue, but i could be wrong.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Altenator wiring help
« on: March 22, 2017, 04:23:55 PM »
I just picked up a new marine gm 3wire altenator, and in the process of hooking it up, I noticed that there is no light or resistor in line of the exciter wire, but there is this switch that I'm not sure what it does for the altenator, can I just bypass it or not, please help. And I would like to relocate the terminal block somewhere other then on the skitow, where is everyone else mounting there's, thanks again for the help

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Jetting question
« on: March 07, 2017, 06:12:09 AM »
I have a mild 454 in a 18ft eliminator, my question is I have a Holley 750dp and she runs great 62mph. The jets that are in it are 72/ 77, and in wondering if I bump up the 77 to say 80 or 82 if that will give me a little more mph, or will it make it run like shit on the top end

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Timing chain advance/ retard?
« on: February 29, 2016, 04:35:13 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has played around with this feature? I have a mild 454 running a comp cam xm flat tappet cam, just wondering if I advanced the timing 4' on the cam chain will there be a beneficial Hp increase, or should I just leave it in the "o" position (stock timing marks)?

Jet Pumps / Impeller help?
« on: January 19, 2016, 06:22:27 PM »
I need to replace my impeller, but I'm not sure which one to get? I have a Berkeley pump, but I'm told the bowl I have is a dominator. Is there a difference between impellers or does it not matter??? And I would also like to get your advise on impeller cut. I currently have an "a" impeller and it gets me 63mph @5200 rpm, what would you guys recommend to get me a higher mph?? Thanks

Jet Pumps / Bowl fixable?
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:44:45 PM »
So the last time out I sucked up some rocks, I was able to get them out, but it had a real bad vibration, so I take the bowl off today to find the impeller is broken and the inside of the bowl dinged and scratched up. I know I need to replace the impeller, but can the bowl be saved?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Tunnel ram or dual plane?
« on: August 14, 2015, 09:02:29 AM »
I'm currently running a edelbrock performer 2.O duel plane intake with a Holley 750 dp. I would like to run a tunnel ram but not sure if it would hurt the performance of the engine? What's a good tunnel ram to run? Or are they all good? Those of you that run a tunnel ram, what would you recommend, and would you run a single or duel carb set up? I have a 454 bored .031 with trw forged domed Pistons, compression is 9.5-1 with 781 heads std valve size with stainless valves, I'm running comp cam xm288 cam.

Jet Pumps / Pump work?
« on: August 12, 2015, 10:53:58 AM »
What all is involved in having pump work done or having a performance build? I currently have a Berkeley pump/ intake with a loader and a dominator split bowl with stuffer. Just trying to figure out where to spend the money, on the pump or on the motor? I have a 18 foot eliminator bubble deck  and a ride plate, just finished building a 468 bbc that makes a little over 500hp, boat runs great, but just looking for your guys thoughts, looking to make the boat faster, ps it has an "a" impeller aluminum

« on: July 14, 2015, 10:26:12 AM »
Has anyone ever tried using 1.7 rockers for intake and 1.5 or 1.6 on exhaust? Just wondering if you can mix them up like that if say you have a piston with only 1 valve relief

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Bearing failure?
« on: July 08, 2015, 04:38:25 PM »
I put my 496 together in time for the 4th weekend, during the assembly, my bearing clearance was a little on the tighter side, but nun the less everything was checked and double checked, during the break in, motor ran great with 50 psi oil pressure. I changed the oil / filter and checked every bolt to make sure everything was good and tight, Friday around noon, I took the boat for its first test putt up to make sure everything was still in working order, so far so good👍, so I loaded up my family and headed down river to the sand bar, once again everything was working great, about an hour later we were headed back up river to the cove, and out of know where engine loses power and oil pressure, long story short, when I pulled the distributer out there is little pieces of bearing in the oil galley!! 👎👎😡, anyone have an idea what might have caused the bearing to take a shit on me? I'm using king racing bearings and melling std volume pump

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Octane?
« on: June 24, 2015, 03:23:45 PM »
My bbc has just shy of 11:1 compression, and I'm wanting to know if 91-93 octane will be ok to run? And if so what do you recommend the timing to be at? It's a 454 block with 781 heads. Or am I forced to run av gas/ race fuel
