Jet Pumps / Legend J120-E thrust bearing replacement
« on: September 13, 2008, 08:36:10 AM »
Ok, am I the only one running a legend????  Jetaholic, I agree, I need to change the bearing. So I'll have ta pull the motor back out, this is the E-style pump, can you fellas tell me if I'll have to remove the whole pump? I just changed jobs and I'm at collins marine on bethel island, my tool supply is plentiful, but just cause were a boat shop dont mean we have all the tools right! Will i need any special tools, will my Merc or volvo tools get the job done?  This pump may have 20-60hrs on it, I just dont think they ever greased the bearing, should I change the zert and see if it quiets down first? Or just dont take the chance! If I pull the pump what  sealant should I use when installing the pump? I just know it wont be 5200! We have ripped transoms apart with that! Do we have a forum here for doing this here or do I need to order that chilton/sealoc/clymer book? :banghead:

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / is a motorola 12v 55amp alt ok?
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:01:42 PM »
my spare alt is a motorola 12v 55amp alt, is this OK?   will this peg my 50amp gauge or is it only 55amp when a major charge or load is required? I know new boats require a greater amperage due to the greater draws(ecu, injection, and other stuff) all I have is stereo ,blower, amps, 2 bildge pumps, and lights.

Projects / does any one think this V-drive is worth it?
« on: August 17, 2008, 06:59:04 PM »
Is this worth $1000? 389 pontiac? is it too much to do a resto over winter? my comp wont let me attatch  but its at         :banghead:    its on the sfbay craigs list!!!    my home comp. wont even let me reply to it! gotta wait till monday!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / amp gauge wiring? HELP!
« on: August 13, 2008, 08:28:39 AM »
Ok motors in! running and the amp gauge wasnt working. I went under dash and found a blown 20amp fuse, change it start up, gauge works but fuse blows. now I work on boats for a living! all have volt meters.  expeirence says theres a 90 amp fuse @ starter from alt. so I put one in. orange wire goes from rear term block to volt metr, a wire goes from meter to where????  do I put it on the B+ on key switch? I already know it doesnt go to ign on switch (gives constant + to ign, no shut off!) I do rember reading the forum about wiring, dont rember seeing any thing bout amp gauge wiring! Trying to do the holiday here on the delta! will there be too much amperage for the b+ wire at the switch? am I over thinking this?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / cheep center rise manifolds for a BBF?
« on: August 10, 2008, 08:07:39 AM »
Being in the industry, I do rember that OMC used center rise manifolds on the 460 King Cobra, I know they were cast iron and heavy, but they were inexpensive. after blowing my first 429, I came across a wrecked (1987 Bayliner) that the boat yard I worked at was cutting up! the motor had 78hrs on it! I stuck the 429 heads on the block and WOW!  after 2 years with TRW 2404 pistons, a stock short block woke up my 79, 19' phantom!  This was the first time I found a true flattop piston (flat with 1 valve relief) in a stock motor! OH by the way those pistons were stamped ford, and carried an industrial part #, and were $68 each my cost. but back to the manifolds, wouldn't these work good w/stainless risers? I/O's use merc manifolds w/after market risers.. I mean they must flow better than logs! I think barr osco still has some... I have a 21 mini day so I'm not worried bout the weight!

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / DP fuel fitting?
« on: August 05, 2008, 06:52:41 PM »
is it ok to turn the dubble pumpers fuel line around so it picks up from the rear of the carb first? my fuel pump is mounted on the transom! I like keeping fuel lines as short as possible! It's a 750 Dp..

Gelcoat / Paint / Fireberglass Repair / Should I strip it?
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:56:45 PM »
hey I have posted questions in the engine tec area gotten rapid response! I am a newby to this site and I dont think I'll ever look for any other site!  scream and fly was open to too wide of a range! THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE!!! but back to my question, my boat was painted 12 years ago still looks good except where the fuel fills are!  you can tell they didn't use gelcoat! I work in the marine industry and this wouldn't have happened! It was painted at a custom auto shop. this I know as it belonged to a friend. I luv the candy reds and purples used, this took months to do! BUT I would prefer the boat to be pristene.... should I strip it and start over! :screwy:
