Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Heads off today
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:28:39 AM »
Ok the vc that's dirty underneath I'd the side that has 2 cyl with lower compression than the rest. Any guess as to why it's dirty underneath?

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / She's missing a little..
« on: September 11, 2014, 08:57:43 AM »
Boat has ran stellar all season.  It sat for about three weeks, then took it out last Thursday. Fully up to temp coming out of no wake, I rolled into throttle, planned out and mashed it. Sounded and felt like one week hole.

Plugs are a year old cap rotor and wires three years old. 93 octane non eth. Rebuilt Qjet in '12 with brass float (original neoprene was sunk), boat has never missed a beat. I can get it to miss by getting on it hard from about the time secondaries open 3300-4500.

I may take it to the lake here in a little while, take a look at the plugs and swap plugs with the last set that I had that worked. If not I'll at least look at plugs and verify there's no whiskers. Might pull the cap and have a looksie.

I was told by original owner that he replaced plugs every season no matter what..

May have been a reason he did that but I think it was the way the carb was set up from factory. It was non regulated putting out 9 psi, couple years ago when I bought it the oil smelled like gas, I jumped the fuel pump and saw fuel running down onto the butterfly. That's all been solved, regulated down to 5 psi to where the carb can hold it back.

The other thing, I did a compression test a few years back at Elsinore and two cylinders were lower than the others. Likely due to the exhaust riser leaking, maybe got the valves crusty, since then fixed and runs with no issues.

94 marine power 454 close to 700 hours, valve job couldn't hurt, but the damn thing runs so good I don't want to fuck with it. Anything else I should be looking for? I don't want to start buying stuff to throw at it.. Eventually motor will come out for a freshening up but that may be years from now as long as it runs the way it always had up until last Thursday.

The No Wake Zone / Couldn't turn down a FREE pontoon boat

I was at a customer's house on Lake Wylie in South Carolina to fix a door. Noticed she had a few boats tied up out back, asked if I may wander down the dock to have a look. She followed me out and I mentioned the upholstery was pretty far gone, she said she didn't think she could pay someone to haul it away.

I'm told it has 180 hrs on it. Boat is a 97 as well as the outboard. 50hp Honda four stroke. I noticed the battery cable housings were chewed up and bare cables touching each other. She said they went to use it one weekend and it didn't start... Hence the other new one.

I asked how much she wanted for it and she told me if I get rid of it by Saturday, (before her pool party) that I could have it for nothing. Now it's mine. Needs some work but there's not much to it. I rented a trailer from her neighbor and he towed me to his launch ramp and let me use the trailer to get it home for $100. That's all I've invested so far, waiting for the weekend to hear it run. I'm not thinking of trying to match paint and upholstery scheme for both boats.

The No Wake Zone / Don't worship the sun..
« on: January 10, 2014, 02:25:36 PM »
For years my ol lady has bitched at me about wearing sunblock. I've always hated how sunblock feels on my neck, plus I like to get a nice tan in the summer.

Well the same chick has recently been bugging the crap out of me to go to the Dr. for a checkup and to have them look at this funny little flat brown spot on my shoulder. I hate going to the Dr, and I pissed and moaned about going. I thought it was the stupidest reason to pay a $25 copay.

Turns out it's malignant melanoma in situ.

Bummer, but it was caught at stage zero. They'll do a little more trimming next week and say I'll be good to go and very lucky the woman caught it.

Don't be afraid of the dermatologist.

Jet Pumps / Steering Cable
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:52:08 AM »
Who else is sick of spending $150 on a new cable and rack and having it turn to shit in a year?

I put the new cable on with the big grease nut o ring and zerk fitting and greased the hell out of it to keep the water out. Well, sometimes my boat sits in the water overnight if I get back to the marina too late for the forklift to bunk it, water seeps in and then it can't get out. I'm half ass tempted to look at a hydraulic setup since teleflex only makes galvanized cables and not stainless. How often are you buying cables?

The No Wake Zone / Lifting my truck just a little
« on: December 27, 2013, 05:31:25 AM »
2002 Silverado ext cab longbed 2wd. Time for new tires and I want to stuff a little bigger tires under it. Trying to decide between coil spacers new coils or spindles. I have a separate complete set of control arms upper/lower with stock spindles since the ones on the truck got boogered up in the accident a few years ago. Anyone have experience with a small lift in the front?

Jet Pumps / Scupper/check ball drain plug?
« on: July 24, 2013, 03:44:09 PM »
Looking for a solution to let my boat drain at the marina. I now keep it dry stacked indoors at a marina right by my apartment on Lake Norman.

I'm not always there when they pick it up at the dock when I'm done with it and put it away. I leave the engine hatch and floor lockers open so nothing mildews or stinks. I still don't like water sitting in the hull all the time. I have an flat switch for the bilge so I don't mind if it leaks a little. Anybody know of one or use one?

The No Wake Zone / Random question
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:00:19 PM »
Anybody ever spin their jet boat?

My boat tracks pretty well, but at higher speed when I turn sharp I can flirt with the pump breaking loose from the water. I don't want to spin it because I don't think a 21 footer's transom will do well going backwards at 30mph with a big block trying to dunk it.

Really lame question I know,  but I'm probably going to keep pushing the envelope until I do a 180 or better.

The No Wake Zone / Man's best friend
« on: February 05, 2013, 09:39:37 PM »
I'm left with a ragged leather collar with sharpened stainless steel spikes, ID tags and 15 years of good times and memories.

Some little stray miniature pinscher followed me home on my Schwinn when I , was 12 years old. I couldn't keep him. Pops wouldn't let me take him home because he had just lost a dog after 18 years.

For a week after I first met this dog  we were stuck together. After school, I'd come home, grab my bike and I knew I'd find him at the continuation school cafeteria. They'd always feed him leftovers so that's where he hung out.

I was fuct cause I couldn't take him home but I was gonna keep him for someday. A friend let me keep him in his backyard a long as I fed him and picked up his shit.

For two months I rode my bike to Petsmart every day after school and bought a $0.59 can of cheap dog food, brought it over fed him and cruised the neighborhood letting him follow met on the bike. He was always right on my ass, got his nose burnt on the tioga comp III a few times from following too close.

I bitched and bitched and bitched about bringing him home so he could sleep in my bed. Finally, 13th birthday came around and I was expecting some cool gifts. Mom says, "I'll drive you to go get the dog food." I thought, shi t, that's cool. She pulls up at my buddy's house where he was kept... I'm confused at this point.. She said, "Your father and I talked about it and decided you can bring him home for your birthday present."

Holy crap, went and grabbed his ass  jumped in the car and bawled my eyes out on the way home. He licked every tear off. I had the best years with that dog same bed. We were an item.

I moved a few miles away and he didn't adjust to the move, do he had to be with my parents. Saw him and sat on the couch nearly every day for the last 4 years. Health went down hill for him, he was losing to much weight and starting to stumble around. I had to make a decision before it was too late and he would stuffer. This was a dog that would catch a small tennis ball while doing a backflip... He had become a shell of a once vigorous animal. Mom (who had become severely attached) wasn't supportive at first. I set a date and time last week to let my dog go with dignity.

The same woman who drive me home with the same dog while I cried as a teenager, drove me to the vet tonight. While I cried.

I had to keep it together somewhat so he stayed calm. Hand fed him a double quarter pounder with extra cheese piece by piece all the while on the examining table.

Everything went as smooth as it can. Great staff at the VCA in La Mirada, they were calm and good with him, no yelps plus they let me hold him as he went.

Sorry for the long ass post. Just letting you know an 11lb stray mutt can bring a man to his knees.

Fiancee and I are visiting family in NC. Dining at the Red Rock cafe in Huntersville. Kasey Kahne, Joey Logano, Todd Bodine and what looks to be a relative of the Petty's are here to celebrate Brad Sweet's birthday.

We've been whoring or table for hours buying rounds of drinks to keep our seats. Some bigger names in Nascar, non drivers are here too. Not leaving till the limos stop showing up.

Todd Bodine is sitting nearest over my left shoulder.

Didn't wanna be a total Dick and yell "hey!" Then flash his eyes out.

Engine Mechanical / Electrical / Lifter, valve or pushrod wtf
« on: September 23, 2012, 03:23:53 PM »
Ran it this mornin at Elsinore. Cruised around the lake once like a pace-car lap then I went around again throttling hard 4500 rpm with bursts of 5-5100. Long ways around the lake.. pulled into Coors cove and heard it clickin away! Oil pressure perfect, water temp 140*

First sounded like a spark plug boot was loose, they was all good. I thought better get back on the trailer. I was idling back to the ramp from the cove and noise faded. No more tic...

Had to know if it was a fluke so I mashed my foot down the carb and drove it hard for half a minute or so, rather have shit hit the fan here than in parker cause I got time to fix it before that trip. Noise still gone, gauges are all happy. Gave it one more burst and noise came back so I limped the hell off the water.

Why would the noise come and go? Can a lifter stick and unstick whenever it wants?

Any of you's hear valve train noise after lightly punishing your equipment?

I like to have faith in my shit and know that its good halfway between needles and laughlin..

With 600 hours I think it deserves a valve job, new lifters and/or pushrods, springs, guides and whatever else wants to come out and play...

Jet Pumps / Replace Morse cable and use my command 200 helm?
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:48:02 AM »
Working in Pomona today, so gonna head down to Rex and get me a new cable. He's got both; 18' Teleflex cable and rack to work with my existing helm, bolt on, 15 minute replacement.

He's also got the Teleflex "the rack" complete system at a few bucks less...

Am I better off using my Morse helm since it isn't damaged or worn, or is the new system better and worth another 45-1hr install time?

If anyone has any experience with the new system lemme know.

I've heard the old Morse helm is better if its still good. I was just gonna open the box and look at parts and guess which is better.

Gaylord's X2000
3 yrs old

I bought the cover new in a box for $250 then paid $670 for the scissor hardware and gas shock combo.

It was pricey, but the shocks being up front allow it to open a bit higher and not have a strut in the way on the sides when its open.

Asking $300
