Wow. It's almost laughable how hideous that thing is. Who in the design department gave that the ok?

My step dad used to tow his Tahiti with a 396 Camero.  :screwy:

Tow my Tahiti everywhere with my 98 4Runner. Every weekend to the lake, been out to Laughlin, Cottonwood and heading out to Parker/Lake Martinez next month. Only part that sucks is any huge long grades but I just take it easy and it does just fine. Nice having a small tow setup at times since it's so maneuverable.

Oh yeah, has 280,000 miles and still runs like a champ.

Rad 3 days out on the water. Tons of boats, cold beer, idiots on lake lice and good times. Sunday was crazy in the cove! Boat ran flawless all weekend except for a fuel pickup issue that I was able to fix on the water.

Motor?

Headers or Logs?

How much water is in the oil? Notice moisture under valve covers or is the oil turning into a milkshake?

That's never what I stated, or implied!

Oil pan suggestion was in addition to a number of other things known about the engine, wasn't it?

I also replied to your other post. You can quickly check to see if the engine has a large capacity oil pan... If it doesn't, plan on an engine rebuild, AND additional parts that you will need to help support the oiling in the engine

Maybe I interpreted it wrong, or don't understand what your trying to say here?

If so, my bad

Hahaha, easy guys, easy!

Not the original owner, but guy I got it from was. Motor was rebuilt, but has been many many moons.

Boat's definitely not a trailer queen, by any means. Out almost every weekend, usually both days. Less then 20 minutes from home to being out on Elsinore. I don't drive like a grandma, but don't thrash it either.

I'm not saying a Olds engine doesn't have it's problems. By all means, I know they are prone to oiling problems, water pressure issues, water/oil contamination and don't like high RPMS. I know! I was just implying that just because it has a small oil pan, doesn't mean it automatically needs a rebuild.

If an olds had been run with a small pan for any time in a jet boat, especially with no oil mods...it's injured

Sent from my iPhone using SoCalJetBoats

Hmmm, pretty broad statement.

Olds came in just about every jetboat in the 70's, ran for years, some still going to this day, trouble free. Stock oil pan and all. Including mine.

Guess it's about how it's driven, maintained and if rebuilt, how well it was done.

Cheers!

How hard is relative! Removal of intake, timing cover, timing chain, and oil pan are necessary.
You make the call if that's hard for you.
You can buy a set of lifters and a cam for $100
...but always keep this bit of info in your mind

Nothing good is ever cheap, and anything cheap is never good!

Agree with this 100% . What may be easy for some, may be an overwhelming task to another.

Taking it apart may be easy, almost anyone can do that. But putting it back together and making it last, that can be another story.

Hmmm... Flat cam, small oil pan!

Sounds like a healthy 455 engine to me!

Sent from my iPhone using SoCalJetBoats

Flat cam would contaminate the entire oiling system, no matter the capacity.

That's what the guy said it might have a flat cam how do u know if the cam goes flat

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using SoCal Jet Boats mobile app

Oil looks metallic
Rough idle
Poor performance under a load
Low compression
Failed leak down test

Easiest way is to pull valve covers, turn it over and look for a rocker arm that's not lifting as far as the others.

Why would the oil pan capacity instantly mean it'll need a engine rebuild?

At this guys house in Washington I haven't bought it yet just wonder if it's worth buying

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using SoCal Jet Boats mobile app

Where are you located? Seems like a far drive if you aren't in that area...

Just replacing a cam and lifters won't be cheap. The reason being if it has a flat cam, there are metal shavings everywhere in the motor, and it will ALL need to be gone through.

Figure you buy this boat, drop a grand (that's being VERY conservative) into it to make it run, you'd already have $2600 into it. Who knows what else it needs, but it'll need something. Might as well save a bit more, buy something that's turn key for around the 3K mark and go have fun.

Just some things to think about.  :sly:

Have them fix it and throw a wrap on it.

Or have it fixed, primer and leave it and it'll be a cool conversation piece
