Ok the the lifting eye bolt broke and motor fell about 2 to 3 feet.  :banghead:I diddnt find the damage until installing mount bracket. didn't break off but cracked across lower bell housing, will welding it be risky?

funds are limited!! I looked on summit and they have their grinds w/lifters, at half the cost, but I have gotten used to walking in to stores for certain items. This is MY first v-drive build. I have done many Merc, volvo, and indmar warantee repairs and replacements over the years. I should have a house with a garage in a couple of months, then I can spend the money and do it right!  I usually build my BBF's 460s for 6000 rpm to be safe. But this is a 16' v-drive, so I dont know what to shoot for.

The boat is a 16' v-drive, bassetts, victor intake, pretty much stock motor. just want to catch the end of the summer! the lobes on the stock cam are bad.

so if this is an olds then what? I know GM parts swap but trannys too? ok its a 455 cast#396021 and heads are cast#394548. so I believe its all good.. and it has a single carb tunnel ram intake! so how do I bolt up a velvet drive to this? 1:1 or reduction gear? should I find a olds trany? too many ???? too soon?

I can e-mail if you want! I work on boats every day, I just dont know how to do wood! and dont have the money to have it done. est is 1200 per plank, from what I can tell its only one.

I was looking to get a v-drive but I just found out my other boat (30' chris craft) has a bad plank! I cant afford to fix the old girl! bout 1200 plus bottom paint! so I'm thinking of cutting down to 1 good delta boat! but I think your right that cobalt is prob a tank! it's probably the one with a power front windshield! the early ones were built like DESTROYERS!!!
