I'd check to see if the intake is still epoxied into the hull.

The intake fin is not that big of a deal, as long as it doesn't leak, however, that boat took a pretty hard hit to do that.

That Jacuzzi YJ pump is pretty reliable, and good for a heavy boat, but don't expect much top speed out of it, either. Keep an eye on the rpms, stock olds don't like much more than 4500 rpm. If you get more than that, you probably need a wear ring.

Always loved the sleekcrafts.

I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I'd ditch the water pump for a plate.
What hp was the cobra 460 rated at?

Lakes Only would know about cam and intakes, although I prefer single planes on jet boats.

What heads? Later Fuel injected or older carb heads? Adjustable rockers or fixed will affect cam selection.

What exhaust manifolds are on it? If they are iron, I'd ditch them too, for weight reasons, and flex plate over flywheels too.

Most 460/jets like an 850, even mostly stock.

Wow, that sucks.

I'd wager to guess it's time for head gaskets. You probably don't want to hear that a rod bearing spun, so I won't say it. Chocolate milk shake doesn't lube too well.

If you can isolate the cooling system on the engine and pressure test it would be your best bet. About 18-20 psi. Logs can leak internally, so check that too.

There are guys that know a lot more about Olds than I do.

Condition of the leading edge of the impeller makes a difference. As well as the trailing edge, and vanes on the bowl.

I was amazed when M.P.D. detailed my impeller.

Looks like all the parts are there.
Take a look at how the cable is adjusted, and get all the "up" you can get. You don't really need that much down travel.

As far as pump set up, depends on the hp you are running. Keeping the wear ring tolerances correct is usually an improvement.

Boating season ends Dec. 31.
And starts Jan. 1.
Usually last time out is Thanksgiving Friday, water level permitting.
First weekend in March weather permitting. Fishing (eek!!) Thru the snowbird season.

Oldest granddaughter will be ready to ski next season.

Boat still looks great!!!

Most newer Mercruisers are efi, and open cooling, so it's pretty common.

Lower water temperatures are proven to make horsepower. 160 should be the upper limit, hard water and all.

Go to the lake, Parker is flowing river, not ideal for a shake down run.

Site 6 is a decent choice, just not on a weekend or busy time. Week days would be best.

Stay close to site 6 until you are sure of the boat.

Remember power steering-
No power, no steering.

Nothing wrong with a JC pump.
Its just not a split bowl.
You already have a diverter on it.
G bowl will fit right on. (Split bowl)
Intakes are virtually identical to the newer versions.
Same with suction housing.
Impeller to wear ring clearances will make a huge difference.
Loaders are available.
My JC pump has both a loader and a ride plate and shoe. Diverter too.

Yes there is better set-ups, but you have a solid foundation.

Lol loved that comment bro . When I run with some of u jet guys they get me out of the hole and get 100-200 feet on me and then I run them down lol . I will run with most guys unless I know the set up lol but if I see a BIG ASS blower then itís meh itís cool u less they will run a mile straight then I will . My sled loves chop lol more chop the faster she runs

Now the last piece to my jet boat is a pump rebuild as itís pretty worn out.


Like having a tournament ski prop on a hotrod flatty. It works, but isn't ideal.

It's like comparing apples to French poodles.

In certain drag racing classes, jets routinely line up with V-drives, and it's all up to the driver. No clear advantage.
V-drive guys don't like hearing about that.

On the river, in my experience, a few v-drives had their asses handed to them by a (my) ditch pump.
Likewise, I've seen the transom of more than one v-drive. (My junk only gps'd 72 mph)

The one clear advantage is cubic dollars- how fast can you afford to go?

Best bet, is Tom @ Jet Boat Performance.

Or possibly an energizer kit, to run a Berkeley style impeller, and then get a stainless impeller. Again, Jet Boat Performance would be my choice.

Eliminator recently did a 21' Daytona, less engine. I believe Teague did the engine and final rigging. Big blower motor if I remember right.

I couldn't imagine the price tag on that one.

Here on Scjb, there was an ad for a complete tunnel hull, 7 color gel coat, for $9k? It's been a while, prices have probably gone up. This is/was a new hull. Still needs everything else, engine, pump, interior, and  even a trailer.

There is new boats to be had, but you gotta search for them.

Getting ready for the burley Idaho race was checking  my pump out ,the input shaft seemed to move back and fourth about a 1/2 inch and it spins pretty freely the impeller sounds like a tin can noise,  talked to George at ars marine he built the pump  said it might sound like the thrust bearing , pumps only 3 yrs old after a 3000 dollar rebuild real bummed , last year blew 2 motors one my brand new stroker motor broke in the first 20 minutes  had a roller lifter fail ,brand new everything  , took out the block and camshaft  and then scrambled to get my back up motor fixed that had a blown head gasket  then after the swaps lasted until late August  then blew another head gasket now I get to pull the pump and send it back to George  this really sucks , but I'm not quitting!! 😠

I'd pull it apart and see what's going on. Several places have an impeller puller. Hopefully the wear ring isn't welded to the impeller. And the wear ring didn't take out the suction housing. Sounds like the bearing slid up on the shaft?

It's an insert pump.
That changes a few things.

Golden eagle was one of Jacuzzi's pumps, I just don't remember if it was the insert pump.

If it doesn't leak, mask off and leave the insert in the boat. The insert is "glued" into the hull with something like seagoing epoxy, just like a typical pump intake.

Disassembly will be pretty easy with the engine out. And probably the only way to remove the shaft, as it comes out the front. (Bearing comes out the front)

CP Performance has quite a few videos on disassembly of Berkeley and derivatives. The internals are essentially the same, just a Jacuzzi insert housing. Probably Jacuzzi's bearing on a energizer shaft. possibly Jacuzzi seals too.
