1969 18' Rogers.....
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:19:20 AM »
Hello guys. Im starting another project that I bought from a fellow member and wanted to share with the site. I also wanted to see if anybody recognized the boat and if they had any info on her. When buying the boat for the price I bought it for I knew there were obviously some issues with it. The nose of the boat has a repair job that has been done and not that good so I will have to fix that. No biggie. The issue I found yesterday is that I noticed that the boat set uncovered for some time and the inside was pretty weathered. Along with that the engine has some water in it and will not turn over. Today I am going to pull the motor out and start to break it down to see why I cant manually crank it. The jet is a Berkley. Since I am fairly new to jet boats I am not sure what jet it is. I do know that when I picked it up it did not have the same nozzle that shows in the picture, in fact it had no nozzle. The jet was taken apart down to the bowl. The guy did give me some parts to the jet but he said that they were parts for drag racing the boat. I really dont know. LOL

Here are some pictures and I will post more later today.

wet sanding is the best way to bring the shine back on that boat. my boat was really bad and a little wet sanding, buffing and polishing it looks pretty good for a 40 yr old boat. congrats on your project. there a great project but expensive  :P

So Sunday I pulled the motor out of the boat and started to tear it done. When I pulled the heads off I found water in 3 of the 8 cylinders. And one of them had so much rust. Can anyone help me out and tell me how this is possible as well as what can I do to fix this? I have done some research and found some info and it all sounds possible but I am wondering if this engine is gone or can it be fixed. I am assuming this is why the engine would not turn over!

Best case scenario. It had blown head gaskets. Only other thins I can think of are reversion from the exhaust(headers) or if the motor has been overbored too far and found porosity that leads to a water jacket.

Mine was stiff when working it back and forth on the trailer.
Once I got it on the water and under power, it was amazing!

Just read the first post there is a possibility that the water could be from sitting in covered and the carb uncovered? It's a stretch but possible
