Best all-round Lake in So Cal
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:02:20 PM »
If all goes well with reviving my Father's boat, I would like to take the Family on a small Vacation / getaway. I haven't been to any state park around here for camping since I was a young and was wondering which one was best for a Boating / Camping trip. Probably going to take a week off in September.

Thanks,
James

You might have to drive to elsinore for a boating/camping combo. Not saying its best or even good....

My vote, especially for the camping aspect of it would be Buena Vista. http://www.co.kern.ca.us/parks/buena-vista.asp Kick ass camping right on the water, by September the idiots will have gone back to their worlds and the water cops will be re-deployed.

Naci X2!

Pyramid is a good lake but the campgound is only good for sleeping in if the kids arent playing their music. And you are about a mile from the lake.

If you partake in Barley pops, Castaic is out. Dont know about the camping there

I hear if you keep it low pro, the man at Piru wont hassle you about adult beverages. Camp spots here are small unless you get full hook-ups. Also, no PWCs allowed!

Elsinore smells for the first hour or so but they have better than average camping.

No swimming at Casitas, they have a water park across the street and the campgound is good.

What about the river? Park Moabi in Needles, Red Rock on Parker strip and others. I like Red Rock cause you can crawl back from Fox's.

Thanks for all the helpful info guys. I think im leaning towards silverwood though. It's close to me and its the only one I remember camping at when I was younger and if they still have fire pits at their campsites that's a plus. Unless anyone has something bad to say about silverwood, me and the wife are probably going to decide on it.

I got mad at them when they gave me a parking ticket, for my own stupidity.
But watch the wind, and where you ski or wakeboard because it's only in designated areas.
Don't go fast and you'll be o.k. ( thats all I got to say about that )

Try Buena vista small mud hole far as boating, but its close and the camping is good,,You can get your rig on the grass by the  water  and beach the boat...

I've never taken a boat there but puddingstone camping is pretty nice. Hole in the wall of a lake though... But just to get it wet and hang out, can't be that bad.

Well We just got back from Silverwood. Family had a blast, especially the boy. Got there Thursday and the lake was like glass, very nice. Got some white caps late Friday and Saturday had a good amount of boats on the lake but not as choppy as I expected. I still got some days off work and the family wants to go out one more time so I figured we would try Paris on Tuesday (since I got that tag on there still from Silverwood  ) How's the water there about mid day during the week?

I didn't know Puddingstone had campgrounds. I thought it was RV only... But the park is smoke free and we're smokers so that wouldn't have gone over well

Oh, I didn't know it was smoke free. I've camped there many a times and never been hassled about smoking. But yeah the rv's are closer to the water, keep going and they have tenting it sites.
But I've never even been near the water there, it's normally just a camp out for the night or something.

Perris on a Tuesday?  You will be the only boat out there not fishing would be my guess.  Have fun!

Don't be too sure about that. My brother in law is coming with us this time and he'll fish off anything. He already said he'es bringing his poles. We'll probably be the only jet boat out there fishing ;D

How is the water cleanliness there? My buddy said he was there about 4 years ago and it was nasty. He said that's why he's never gone back. Is it any better now? I was hoping to do some skiing.
