This is the question I've ran over and over my head for some time . I've always been proud of my will power and being able to dedicate myself to something like , when I quite smoking cold turkey . Piece of cake . I did stop drinkin during the week (because getting up at 3 am to go to work hungover sucks) for sometime and found myself maybe drinkin 1 or 2 during the entire weekend if at all . I was on a roll . I know I can . I find myself not wanting to and then here I am making an ass of myself on the internet . If I'm absent , I'm probably sober . I know I should because of my health . Not to mention my freakish dick-do is getting out of control .

The best incentive I know is my daughter.

I was lucky because my alcoholic dad got his incentive to stop drinking from a judge (I was about 10).

My wife is still dealing with an alcoholic parent and I will not put my daughter through what my wife and I have been through.

If you want to help secure your future involvement with your kids you need to seriously think about cutting down or stopping.

Hey Omar, I don't want to "put you on the couch" here, but, by this posting IMHO, you have already taken a very large step in the right direction.

I don't think I have ever really had a drinking "problem", I have never even smoked, I did have a period of time that I think I drank way too much that lasted about four years, but just got tired of feeling under par and not "getting anywhere", I still have a frosty adult beverage once in a while, but it's rare.

I follow three very simple rules.
1. If I am the one doing the driving, whether it be for myself or anyone else, I don't drink at all.
2. If I need to be at work or do something that would require me to "be there" the next day, I don't drink at all.
3. I limit myself while drinking so that I don't get "fall down drunk", I'm 6'6" and weigh 230#, if I fell on someone, I would kill 'em

This one requires the help of someone who cares to intervene when this starts to happen (thanks wifeepoo).

I don't have much, but would hate to lose what I do have.

My dad could be considered an alchoholic, but not really, he has a couple drinks in the evening after dinner and has actually stopped cold turkey for a year just to prove a point, an alchoholic could not do that...
I sincerely hope you find the help you need, even if it is here among these boards to feel better about yourself....

You DONT want to go the judge route. That will make your life miserable...for a long time$$ From what i've seen it usualy makes people drink more...at first. You got to figure it out man.

The only reason I posted this here for the "world" to see is because (now dont go crying about this) I see the board as a reflection of myself , wife , kids , wake up early , long commute , project boat type stuff . I think I've just had to much time on my hands and need to fill the void with something . I was at the grocery store the other day and stuck my arm in the blood pressure machine and it said 140/102 and of course I had a handfull of beers in me . I'll figure it all out today over a carb swap on the hallett and a cooler of beers .

Except the friends and family of a real Alcoholic.

It just so happens, i am a REAL alcoholic. My personal description is well noted in the first 178 pages of the Big Book of AA. Tons of misconceptions about alocoholism out there and all the opinions in the world mean dick except for yours! (All respect to our firends that want to help).

I was a happy drinker, i did it all my life and got quite good at it. I wasnt a black out drinker, or the guy that drank until sickness. I didnt have to wake up with booze to stop the shakes, nor did i have seizures or any on set illnesses from drinking. But i came to find out that all the things that i didnt like about my self was from booze. I used booze & drugs to hide from the shyte that i couldnt deal with head on.... like life, death, realtionships, sadness, happiness, and so on. If things went into the toilet, i drank. If things were great, I drank. Drinking kept me from facing truths about myself & others hence burying them deep inside. I found out after i sobered up and got into AA and started to learn about my "ism", that i was a text book "Liar, Cheat, & Theif! Everytime i lied about something, or didnt disclose the real truth, I stuffed that crap in this imaginary golf bag that i carried around. Whiskey Man was the only dude that could help me carry that bag around. In AA I learned how to empty that bag, set my selfishness aside, and live differently so i didnt have to carry things with me any more. \
Imagine a secret that you have held for years. You are the only one that knows this secret and the thought of it getting out is devastating. Because of the severity of this secret, you are convinced that if the truth got out, life would be over as you know it. maybe its a wife thing, or a work thing, or a best friend thing. Once you are able to see things clearer, and let this secret out, the weight of the world will be lifted off your shoulders. Once you cop to your shortcomings and deal with the truth, it is no longer yours to carry. Now it is on whom ever this imaginary secret is really about. You just took away one more reason to drink, one more reason to Lie, and your concience is clear.

I can go on for days, but i wont. If your boat is broken I am sure we can all give you good solid advice how to fix it, but when it comes to matters of the first person, only one can make a decision to do what it takes, the best we as friends can do is give you our truth & experiences and let you choose what path YOU want to take.

I quit drinking for 14 years, decided to drink again and went right back where i left off. After futal attempts at controlled drinking for 3 years, i remembered that i am an alcoholic and back to AA I go. Been there for 6 years now.

Thanks Charly . SInce that last post I hadnt had hardly anything to drink . One day I opened up a beer and it tasted like crap . I just need to be in a the mood I guess . I think what I need is a new job with a new company .

I had three beers all weekend...i was sick all weekend still am...i got off work way early today and had a couple bloddy beers since i took that break over the weekend the beer doesnt taste all that great...dont get me wrond omar i drink pretty much like you do, and for some reason i feel like it goes along with our trade...i have noticed that since me and the gf have been having our problems that the drinking was way worse for me...now that we are finally starting to do better the drinking has subsided...anyway that is a different subject i gotta go work on my bike im going riding tomorrow morning take care and good luck...i would reccomend just trying to slow down and getting drunk during the work seems like a good idea until the alarm clock goes off

I hear ya Josh . People never understand why I'm trying to get shitfaced in the morning or why I start drinkin in the morning . When my alarm goes off at 2 am , I've woken up worse

One morning I could even stand , let alone find the bathroom . Dont do that anymore

This is deep. Could go on forever. Alcoholic is a very American term. My Euro friends drink 6 pints every night. Alcoholic or social drinking? If you are hurting your family or abusive, it is a problem. If you are just killing the the last hours of the day, seems OK. If you are with friends working on your jet boat, seems like good social drinking times. The debate could go on forever. When my son went on chemo my drinking increased. Thought I had to kill the pain. Too much to bear. And the tumor fight will continue his entire life. I still drink. But try to limit it to fun/social drinking with friends wrenching on cars or boats. Sometimes fear of my son's future grabs me and I drink. But I am trying to get a grip on it.

PS He loves jet boating. I have never drank and piloted my Taylor. So more time with my son. Best wishes to you for any decision you come to. Could have been just a bad night you shared with your jet boat friends. It is nice to be understood. We are bretheren of water power!

Omar "beerjet." You are the only one who contacted me when my son went on chemo and my life was crushed. How caring that was!!!!! I am know living in Texas to deal with his condition. (miss SoCal) Your PMs helped me stay positive. And I appreciate your time and effort responding to my posts. Drinking is not evil, until it hurts your family. Your post was from a man who desires to excel. And I am sure you will. Best wishes. Will be in SoCAl in 2009 for work. Look forward to meeting. My Jet will be in Texas.
