Trailer bunks: Choosing correct lumber
« on: July 05, 2011, 12:37:05 PM »
Need to replace my bunks like yesterday and I know nothing about this subject. One friend says that I need pressure treated lumber and another friend says no to the pressure treated but he can't remember the reason why. Also, I looked at 2x4's but they look to be thicker than what I currently have. Is it possible that my trailer bunks are 1x4's?
Thanks in advance

pressure treated lumber is usually crap lumber with tons of knots and imperfections.

i just used plain ol 2x6 douglas fir from teh depot and put like 10 coats of that thompson water seal on it.  stainless staples and some carpet with counterstunk stainless bolts.  done deal.

Replaced all 4 bunks today with a friend. Lifted the boat w/ a floor jack and did one side at a time. Bought the lumber yesterday morning @ the local big box store along with a gallon of Thompsons, 5/16" lag bolts and a pound of galvanized roofing nails. I decided to buy the carpet from Rex Marine since the rolls come pretty much pre-cut and this stuff is made especially for bunks. It was a pretty easy and stright forward job. The old bunks were crap! The stuff they were wrapped in was almost like the stuff you'd see on a pool table. Thanks for the advice ka0tyk!

X2 on the pressure treated stuff.    Red wood 2x4 is actually the ticket but Doug Fir will work ok.   I would stay away from lags and go with through bolted stuff.   We use stainless staples and hardware and it is much easier buying the pre cut carpet.  If anybody needs it we have it as well.      RD...

Ditto on stay away from the lags. The guy before me used them and pressure treat but the wood is torn up, the bolts have pulled through and the bunks are coming off. I plan to counter sink and through bolt. Do it once.
