It's actually very easy with a few pointers and proper machine settings.
Sam it all depends on what bells and whistles you want. You can pick up a basic ac/dc tig for fairly cheap. I could show you how to be a real good aluminum welder in a few hours. Most people have problems because they don't recognize the puddle right away and the metal then overheats. It's either that or they try to put the filler in before the puddle is there.
If you plan on buying a tig setup you won't want to mig anymore.

Oh and the reason this is typed so early is because I commute to long beach from San Diego everyday to teach welding. If its something small like your motorblocks, I could just pick em up and weld them for you.

Not to hijack but yeah Dana19 you really need to learn how to weld ally. I am learning/teaching myself right now and its a blast. I love welding and am pretty damn good with a mig and now I have tig to challenge and its a whole different ball game.

Mine was stiff when working it back and forth on the trailer.
Once I got it on the water and under power, it was amazing!

I would but aren't you guys on the metric system? I wouldn't know how to set the flow meter in liters per hour or whatever it is hahaha! If we started a welding thread people could post pics and I could help that way. A lot of the times it's wrong angle, travel speed, heat input, or arc length.

That's pretty good stuff. I like tig brazing too. Do you guys have to brace more and gusset more to add structural integrity to it?

"You guys" meaning off road fabricators? If asking because of using this particular welding rod than no, because of the hell we put these cars through yes. ;D

yeah thats why we weld everything with a 6011 root pass to blow all the cow shit out of the way then a pass or 2 with 7018 to fill up the gap. works every time  ;)
