Title: Havasu Landing APBA Circle Boat Races 2/14-1/15 ?
Post by: Luckie Stiff on January 11, 2009, 10:15:11 AM
Who's going to be attending this race? I've got 5 days off in a row around that weekend and I'm looking for something to do. I love the races, but I'm not going to go if the jetboat boys aren't gonna come and play.

Need directions ??? If your coming from the 10 freeway head through desert center or blyth, head toward needless till you see the right turn to Havasu landing and proceed another 19 miles.

If your coming from the 40 head towards Blyth and when you see the left turn to Havasu Landing..

Turn left :D

if your coming from Bullhead , you already know the way ;D

Sooo....... did i get you guys confused O0

As close as it is i still cant go :banghead:

Sorry folks, it's been a long weekend, y'all are right HAVASU landing.  Any good quad riding near there? Give me something to do while the outboards run  >:D I think I'm taking my trailer & camping there.

You will have alot of time to ride. This is an outboard race that they were kind enough to add the inboards since Bakersfield isnt happening. Boat racing is boat racing as far as I'm concerned its all good. We will be there if it gets the APBA sanction.

Lance,
I spoke with Terry Valore on Saturday, Ted is going to sign off on the sanction. CJ/NJ are a part of this race if they show up, the APBA website shows "sanction pending" guess I'm going to Havabrew in Feb!

theres not much for hotels in town.....so either stay in parker, needles or across the lake in havasu (its a long drive around, or a short boat ride)

i will be rolling down friday...come home sunday

there is hotels in needles (1 hour north)

on boatracingfacts.com i saw someone post a number to someone who rents out RV's/trailers in the area....i will call to see how much it is for the to deliver it and set it up......skip, i will give you a call in a bit about this.  ;)

Try Kathy Scarbrough at (928)453-5010; she rents some of the mobil homes at the landing. I think Needles is closer.

Scott,

to answer your questions about where to stay....i suggest staying in needles...its 35 miles north...hotels are about $35-$40 a night

i looked into the trailer rental there in havasu landing......its $662 for the weekend....that sure as hell isnt in my budget.....and theres some other events going on in lake havasu city (az side of the lake)....so hotels are going for about $250 per night and shit hole motels are going for $80+ per night

so needles it is.

my boat is going to ft mohave in the morning to get the motor dropped in...wish it luck.

looks like the CJ class isnt going to fill for this event.....the possibility is a long stretch, but I dont see it happening.

There is only 2 actual compjets scheduled to compete. The minimum is 4. Theres talks of bringing in non compjet boats to 'fill out' the class. All the other compject boats are either broke, broken, or snowed in (idaho boys) I personally dont agree with this as it make the class look like we are 'rule benders' to build a boat count so a couple of guys can make some uncompetitive laps. Even though no rules are being bent/broken, but it just is not professional in my eyes.

The flip side is that it doesnt make the class look very good as this event is the first 'official' compjet race on the books and we are unable to field a class for the event.

Personally, I would rather scratch the class from the event, than make a half ass attempt to field it. If we arent going to do it right, then we shouldnt do it at all.

I know others disagree with me as they have busted their asses to make sure they were ready for this event. I am right there with you and have been put through shit to try to make this race as well (not to mention previous races/events). I just feel we should cancel out for this one.

PS - the weather has been complete crap in havasu and the forecast doesnt say otherwise for this weekend. If the event does get rain'd/blown out, theres only a 50% refund.

Sunshine... :)

This is a timing thing and happens to every type of low sponsorship, run what you brung racing whether it be cars, motorcycles, boats or whatever. The economy blows, the weather is bizarre to say the least, this is the first race of a new year, not to mention a new president (not that that has anything to do with anything...), this is going to be a tough year for all motorsports, especially boat racing if we don't start catching up on rainfall totals and gain some snowpack...

Hang in there bro, this thing is in its infant stages and will probably get worse before it gets any better, what we need is to have a few more boaters get bit by the "bug"...The Rogue River Marathon was completely shut down for 7 years, we just had the first race in May of '08 and it was for the World Championship with 5 countries represented, thats huge....

If it wasn't frustrating it wouldn't be racing...

what the hell
jr

First off, what "boys" are you referring to? Who is ready out of the ENTIRE west coast field? Jim Rich and Lance, that's it.

So you'd rather shuffle some boats around to take the green than to accept the fact that there's not enough boats to make a legitimate class? Yeah, that sounds good. Shit why not have Chromey get out there and run his cruiser too? It'd be another boat in the field!

I don't have a dog in this fight, so I personally don't give two shits whether there is a CJ class @ this event or not, that being said, I LOVE this class and this sport, to the extent that I've voluntarily offered to attend every single race and meeting as a rep for the CJ class, for NOTHING in return, nada, zip, zero.

I don't care for the idea of bringing in non CJ boats to make a field, but like I said before, I have no dog in this fight.  It just seems kind of  shady to me, and if I were someone looking in from the outside, I'd have to question the integrity of this class as a whole.

Or maybe there's more to it than anyone's being told...................................

I am all for making the race for all who have worked to get there, but I am sorry, I cannot support whats going on.

No idea who these 2 boats you are talking about are. I was told something completely different a few hours ago by Terry....

Per Terry Valore its the following boats:

Boat #1: pw_tony's dads auqua Hondo Pantera which has been admitted to me by Jim Rich that it handles LIKE SHIT. Tony previously has admitted on this site it handles like shit. Other members who own/owned these boats even said they handle like shit. It cannot turn worth crap. Jim called me asking me to drive it and his warmup question was "do you know how to drive on ice?" He is aware the boat is a hazard and he is still pushing to put it out there just to field a race. This is the same guy who told me I was going to kill myself because Liberty's are a dangerous hull and I shouldn't race it.  ::) Anyways, I told him I didnt agree putting that boat out there, its going to do more harm then good. His responce was "then just take the green and pull off so its a legal class". To me that is unsportsman-like activities. I was told Harold Bruce Sr is going to drive this Hondo just so the class has a field.

Boat #2: The second boat is Lewis's Ski boat which isnt prep'd for compjet. No idea of the make/model, but it's being tweeked last minute to be legal to go out there and run.

I just dont agree with whats going on. I have talked to others in the class and they dont agree either. This class looks like a circus on the internet....now we are going to look it on the course. I am one of those people who have WORKED HARD for this class. Say what you want but I stand firm on my decision and that is I do not support this weekends race.

have a safe race.

i agree that you and many others have worked their asses off to make comp jet a class but now it is and its on the venue. the race is this weekend so if their is not enough boats to make a class then i guess they will have to do what they have to do to recieve the points they need to be in contention for US1 in COMP JET

look i feel bad for the people that cant make this race but its not like we havent had almost three months to prepair for this race and if lance and gary wernt going their would still be a class so it behooves them to be there for the points or to atleast show that their is an intrest to the comp jet class, beings this is the first official points race

i was going to stay out of this until i read the above statement  :banghead: this thinking is the start of a problem as i see it. instead of worrying about the class as a hole one would be worried about one's self. Gentalmen this class needs unity... we have always struggled with boat count, and this season is no different.. i am proposing that we as a class need to get together and choose our races wisely. i think there is 9 races this season? for me that would be 9k if i didn't brake anything. how many of us can make them all ??? i guess what i'm trying to say is if we dont have 4 but i would rather 5 true c/j boats we dont attend that event. so that we can make the next event a show to remember.

I didnt want to point out the obvious, but thank you for doing it. This is all about 'collecting points' and not about the 'class'.

...but its not like we havent had almost three months to prepair for this race...

then why isnt the 313 racing and harold is driving some other random boat?

yes now that it is a class people are going to do what they have to do to win us1

the 313 boat will not be there because as you were told in the begining was put together to have fun with and to help promote the class also DAD IS NOT DRIVING SOME RANDOM BOAT there will be a new driver in it only after DAD and I check out the boat to make sure it is safe so the new driver to get some seat time while there is only four boats there instead of 10

For whatever my .02 are worth.
I really dont think a low boat count in this economy is going to be huge suprise to anyone.
I really think it's expected.
I also see the point of NOT wanting non-cj boats out there running, especially an unsafe one and a supposed image that might portray.

Only we as insiders really know the ins and outs so to speak as to what the end results are by having said boats out there running just to have enough boats but from shore it'll just look like another Comp Jet class.
At the end of the day, it's going to come down to a COMP JET class running that weekend.
The black and white of it all is that whether or not these "other" boats are CJ boats or not, through the toughest of times, people are "rounding up the troops" to drag this through to the end.
I commend those who can for this.
I say show up, and race.
If you dont like it, dont race  :-\ .

Racing is not manditory and lets not forget that it's the competative spirit, THE DRIVE, the want of the end result, win lose or draw that made this class and if there isnt even a little piece of you that is chasing the pot at the end of the rainbow, your kidding yourself.
Lets not forget all those Nosty Races nobody (OK, just me) was ready for and we did what we had to to make it happen.
Dont give an inch guys.
Everyone knows the risks and a conscience decision by the drivers will be made to drive or not.
sorry for the long rant

GT - I am going to go out on a limb here and say the economy has no blame in this argument. There is only 1 boat that I know of thats not showing up due to lack of money because of the economy.

HBjr - good luck with the weekend, we can both fight about this until our fingers bleed and we're blue in the face - I just dont agree with it. Non-competitive boats shouldnt be let out on the course. Its like taking my daily driver to a NASCAR event. Its just silly.

Whoa.... holy cow fellas....

Yes the Hondo will be racing. To be completely honest I planned on racing this season anyways.... will it handle near as good as the other Comp Jet's? Hell no. Will it hold it's own in the straights and over rough water.... yup. I wanted to build the boat up more during the winter, to make it turn better, but due to this economy I wasn't able to make it  :-\ But I was indeed intending on racing it. Common sense will let the driver know what to do, and what not to do in this boat.... is this boat considered dangerous? If you're trying to make Harold Bruce style turns then yes  ;) But the driver will NOT be going balls out chasing after the field in the turns.... it will turn fine, but I don't expect/want it do be aggressive in the turns.... But hey it would still be faster than Brad's liberty at Lake Ming through the turns (yes poke intended  ;D). But anywho, racing's racing.... not everyone agrees... and that's the way it will always be.

Let me say that I am an outsider to circle racing boats but not to motorsports racing in general.  It should be expected that the classes will not be as full as they might have been given the weather, the economy, and individual racers' circumstances that's true.  But I agree with Omar and others that to many spectators, they will not know from shore who is 100% class legal and who is not.  I say if this is the payoff for your hard work, why not race?   The race will go on whether some individuals want to bow out or not.  I say the more the merrier and line 'em up.  Let's go racing!

And in regards to pwTony and his boat, I can only compare it to motocross.  Some bikes handle better in turns, some handle better on straights, some do both well but not great, and some are only great in specific situations and just OK in others.  Rookie drivers are going to stay outside and try to stay out of the way if they are smart.  "Run what you brung" has been the racers motto for an eternity, why is it different now?

Fock -- did I really say I agreed with Omar???
Title: Re: Big picture
Post by: Moneypit on February 12, 2009, 11:56:02 AM
Looking at the big picture, and yes, since CJ is no longer a "local" class, it has to be considered part of the big picture. CJ is now a national class. That means nationwide, CJ racers are gearing up to compete. I can speak from "class filling" experience that it is done everywhere, in most classes, on a regular basis. If some of the CJ racers choose not to run a specific event, so be it. The race will go on with, or without you. As a group you are no longer a local club, you are part of an APBA class. The "original" group can do whatever they chose, but believe me, the racers in other national regions will do what ever it takes to make their CJ races APBA point races. At this stage of the season points seem far away, but towards the end of the season they all count, and you can't go back and "do over" any races you chose not to run. Once the CJ class is placed on a sanction it can be an official race if 4 boats take a start on a given day. If the SoCal group decides not to run they are in reality, just deciding not to run.

The Pro Stocks are on the sanction but we, PS89, chose not to race this one for a variety of reasons. I hope any other PS boats that want to race have a class. BTW, this IS the very first race we have pulled out of in twenty plus years.......And as a "racer" it was really tough to do. It is what it is. ;D ;D.....Ray

I say run Comp Jet with Comp Jets if the turn out is low any guy out there that wants to go race will say "Hay I'll go Comp Jet because I might have a chance with fewer boats in the class"  How do you think it all started back in the 70's?  You didn't watch a race and go " Gee I think I'll drop a barrel of cash into an SS boat because there are so many of them they have to have qualifying" No the new guys gravitated to the smaller classes.  In my case it was a no brainer.

Worrying about the next race is for the people that won't be at this race. The class got pushed through the APBA so this race will be a points race. I feel we all look stupid after everybody busted their ass to get it pushed through. The promoter had to change the sanction to get IE comp jet on the bill. The boats that will be out there this race will be "legal" as a comp jet boat. Why not let rookie drivers "myself included" get seat time with a low boat count race? Sounds kinda stupid not to show up for the 1st legal Comp jet race don't ya think?

Post by: Moneypit on February 12, 2009, 07:01:14 PM
Your boat can be inspected at the race site. If you don't pass find me, I'll help you do what ever it takes to get thru tech.

As far as "close the class" goes, that isn't how its done. Once a class is approved and on the sanction, it is a GO. IF not enough boats show up (4) for a legal class, it is not un usual for the boats that do show up to go out and race anyway. Points will not be awarded, but racers want to race. New drivers want/need seat time. Veteran racers can always use a little more "testing"......It is not necessary to "close the class". APBA will either receive race results from a legitimate race, or they won't.  It is too late to even attempt to "close the class" for this race. Actually, in two decades I've never heard of any class "closing" because of low boat count, or lack of advance interest by the  racers.

Imagine, if you will, 4 boats on the road from Florida right now. All 4 are CJ boats that saw the printed sanction and decided to come race. :o :o See, you can't just "close the class" because you don't think there will be enough boats. Big picture guys, big picture......

Brad, IF, (a big IF) you were running a Chevy I would have offered to loan you an engine so you could compete. OR IF I had a Ford, (another big IF), I would have offered you an engine for this race. Trust me Brad, there will be nothing shady or edgy when it comes to SAFETY and new/inexperienced drivers. NO un safe/illegal boat will be allowed to compete. As the guy that sells suits says, "I guuaaaarantttee it". No I'm not a race or class official, but if I see something un safe It WILL be addressed thoroughly.....That, you can take to the bank.....Lets have some fun this season guys. Lets show APBA and the IE racers that CJ is the "real deal"......I think its great you guys can help each other and make decisions as a group. (SoCalJets), but APBA is the big picture here and you've got to start thinking "Nationwide".............Ray

talked to terry today....both heats today ended in this order:

1st - Lance
2nd - Jim
3rd - Lewis
4th - rookie driving the hondo (didnt get his name)

first heat was a mess...i guess they started them on a clock start without even telling them....so they all had no idea what was going on.....the rookie spun out in the hondo

second heat was better and went smoother

theres not much competition out there as lance is almost lapping the entire field.....lewis and jim rich had a little battle for seconds place with the rookie in behind them.

Whew what a great weekend!

The racing was good. Most of the racing was between Lance and Jim.... first heat  was VERY interesting to watch.... Lance and Jim we're going back and forth, it was some good racing. Lance got better at the boat, tried different things that all worked positively for him, so the next heats was just a decent lead on Jim by around a 1/4 lap. Lewis brough his cruiser out to collect points, since his race boat is down.

Saturday it was pretty much just as Brad listed, Lance, Jim, Lewis, and Gary. Gary was a first time circle boat driver. Last friday we had added a rudder (borrowed from Lewis, thank you) and a spin fin to it.... it helped out ALOT. Yes Gary did spin in the Hondo, he took some getting used to the boat, made a wide turn, very much out of the way of everyone, and he took a soft spin on him. He didn't give it very much throttle down the straights.... and was in general getting used to the boat. But Today he did VERY VERY WELL. He got the hang of the boat, was diggin into the turns at the beginning and holding his foot down through the backside of the turn. I can't wait to get a real turn fin in this thing! He was scared about the motor, I told him don't worry about it, place the diverter here, hold your foot to the floor (unless the water says otherwise) and every once in a while take a glance at the oil pressure.... if it goes below 20psi shut it off! But after seeing how well the boat did, for pretty much no set up, hadn't even run since I put it away in September.... I was more than pleased to see the additions we made to it made such a difference!

Also today, Lance got after his boat ALOT harder, he obviously looked more comfortable with the boat, and it showed.... even with the nasty Havasu waves bouncin about. Jim was running as hard as he can, and we're goin to try a few different things here in the future,.... see if it improves or doesn't, but still pleased with the way it performed.
Lewis definetly had the long travel goin on his 20' Miller!  He spun out once on Saturday... but he was PUSHIN the turns.... givin everything the little yellow express had. And after Gary was getting comfortable in the Hondo the last heat on Sunday was very interesting! It was back and forth action between the two until Gary's seat broke, DOH!

Had a great weekend. Kinda wish more comp-jets, or future Comp Jets (which the Hondo might become  ;)) came out and "tried" some of their equipment. Couldn't ask for better weather, and with the low boat count it would have given others chances to be experimental in race conditions. Sure hope this race is happening next year, couldn't have went better!

Jim missed a bouy first heat today, which ended him up getting 4th lane starting position 2nd heat today for disqualification.

Saturday. 1st heat
1.Lance
2.Jim
3.Lewis
4.Gary... possibly a DNF, not sure if he went around enough laps after getting lapped.

Saturday 2nd heat
1. Lance
2. Jim
3. Lewis
4. Gary

Sunday 1st heat
1. Lance
2. Lewis
3. Gary
4. Jim

Sunday 2nd heat
1. Lance
2. Jim
3. Gary
4. Lewis

Also, seems that Sunday 2nd heat they ran 7 laps.... don't exactly know the story behind it... just noticed they were out there for a while and were still going LOL

EDIT.... not disqualified, lost one lap for missed bouy

I will have to admit it was a great weekend and I had a blast. Gary and I were no competition for Lance and Jim but we gave it a hell of a try.

Yes the first heat was a disaster due to to the failure of the officials to inform us that we were doing a clock start. But once we got together with them
they worked with us to do flag starts and we were of to the races.

Tony you might want to edit your post MY seat is the one that broke not Gary's.

And just for your guy's information my name is LOUIS not Lewis.  ;D

I would like to thank everyone who helped me out at the race.  It was a great event!  I look forward to competing with my 1976 Rogers currently being built by R&D Marine.

in the long scheme of things....the Rogers that gary has is Rod's (Hotrod56cars) old rogers.

Terry Valore bought it from Rod....terry traded it to R&D marine for the gel work on the cj410 (now cj21) and they sold it to Gary.
