freakin' sweet! good score son.
still kinda baffled its mine...all the boats I've owned have been shitpiles that required a ton of work. this thing is in great condition for being 30 years old.
-
Looks good Brad, nice find. Is it pretty much turn key or are you do you have plans for this thing?

yes. it is.
it needs new carpet...its not horrible, but its worn
the interior is flawless
the gel has minor scratches/scuffs in various areas that will easily buff out.

this boat has done a LOT of sitting....it got used twice last year and the owner before that (original owner) had not used it in 6-7 years previous then that....it was garage stored.....it just needs a basic tuneup (plugs, points, etc)

Nice find bro, now that we all seem to have working boats we need to plan some kind of river trip for the summer. From what I can tell seems like you have a pretty demanding work schedule, maybe you should call out the weekend then everybody can eitehr follow suite or not go???

Cool boat Brad, I like the lower profile cruisers.
Looks like you got the upgraded motor option too, no peanut heads there.
Now we need to see some pics of it in the water.
-
nice boat
ITS GOT A FUKING CHEBBY :banghead: :screwy:
oh son you have went to the dark side :-\ i thought you was teeched better than that :'( :'( :'(
-
Now we need to see some pics of it in the water.
we're shooting for tomorrow on lake mead.
Unfortunetly, as clean as this boat is, it has some mintor problems that need to be addressed before we go out.
its got a REAL bad gas leak....i smelled it right away when we pulled the cover off when i showed up to look at it....even after towing it 15 minutes over to jim brocks shop, he smelled it too.
then i had it parked on my driveway as you see in the pictures....nose is facing down a bit....well, the wind kicked up and it started to rain a little so i grabbed the cover from under the bow....it was soaked in gas. both tanks were topped off so i think its just got a rotted filler neck. Not a big deal as this is common.
also, it idles a bit rough....i took it by jim brocks right after i purchased it since he was right down the road....he suggesting doing a minor tune up (points, plugs, etc)
and the one big nerve racking thing is there is a real loud knock on one of the valve covers....it only does it 2-3 times right upon startup. im hoping its either a sticky lifter (due to the amount of sitting it does) or the rocker is just loose.
Operation Southwind begins today. Chromey and maybe bloody fingers 1980nordie are going to come over today and knock this shit out ...then head for mead in the morning on sunday.

go ahead...admit it! ;D
-
im just jealous :-\ :-[

the problem with that is that some of the parts to be used for the 'spare' motor would have to come from the pile of parts for the 'race' motor.
either run the cheb or the 514 redneck 429 sits trackside longer.
-
not to mention, i just sold the logs and mounts i would need to do the transplant! :-\

so this boat is turning out to be MUCH more of a project then I ever wanted it to be. Every corner I turned, every angel and perspective I took...the more i dug into it....it rendered MORE and MORE work this boat needs.
I am running late to work. I will post pics/explination later this evening.
-
anxious to hear all about it. Still haven't said where you found the boat through...

Brad , you have options........
#1. sell it for what you payed or a lil more ;D
#2. make it another project :screwy:
#3. or just run it and fix the little stuff later ???
but don't listen to me. Cause i dont even know WTF im doing with a boat........
Good luck ;)
-
That's one awesome boat you scored!!! Looks kinda like a yellow one someone on here has.... :sly: Hahaha Aren't they all supposed to be money pits!! I love mine... I take her out every weekend at Elsinore and planning the first real run April 18th!! Maybe I'll see you around sometime.....it really is a GREAT BOAT!!! CONGRATS!!! Stick with the Chebby!!! O0

im going with option #4......do a 1 week thrash session on it.....there is a lot of sleepless nights (days in my case) in the near future. My plan is to have it on the water 100% completed (no short cuts, its going to be done right) no later then next weekend to do a shakedown of it so its ready to roll in parker the following weekend. The odds are against me with the amount of work that needs to be done. But I had a TON of help from chromey and chief broken finger (nordie) today. It was very discouraging today, but i am determind to not let this boat fail me.

Cool cruiser...so whats wrong with it Brad?

as far as the 'project' side of this boat, it can be tracked here: http://www.socaljetboats.com/index.php?topic=6567
one of a MAJOR bonus's of the day was finding a large envelope with ALL of the original paperwork for the boat....you name it, it was in there....even the write up for the custom order for the boat quoted at $8900 back in december of 1978
also included was all of the warrenty cards for the hull, trailer, motor, pump, ....even the for the original trailer tires and battery.....theres an un-stuck original berkeley sticker......berkeley and hardin marine owners manuals.....some reciepts for parts/work done....registration for several years....and even unused registration stickers from the 80's from when the boat sat for many years.
of course, all of this stuff is gas soaked and very brittle...some of it stuck together....writting has bled through the paper and ran.
-
Yea that was sucky about all the paper work getting messed up....but way cool to see all that stuff...I'm gonna start making phone calls get them tanks emptied and washed out good mmmmmkkkkkkkaaaaaayyyyyy
-
i forgot to mention.....nordie and I gps'd this cuiser a few weeks ago at mead with his cell phone.....hit 58mph...thing launches great too. i think its got more in it....carb still needs to be dialed in.
-
Is there any other way to tell whether the motor is the upgraded 405hp model versus the standard 330hp besides the valve covers? Someone has changed the valve covers on mine over the years and am not sure.
BTW - have you seen all the other Southwind Cruisers pop up for sale since you got yours? There's two more on CL right now for $4K... Hmmm...
