Just purchased my first boat a couple weeks ago. ive grew up around the lake so im not new to boats, but i am new to owning my own. im 19 years old and very interested in finding out more info and getting some help on this boat.
It is a 1973 Glencoe with a 454 and jacuzzi jet. all around a pretty solid boat with no problems. i took it out to lopez lake for a test run and the carb kept backfiring/popping at higher speeds. im mechanically inclined but at the same time im no motor builder. it sounded great besides the popping. think that a proper carb tuning would help it out?
I already love this boat though and very happy with the purchase. Nacimiento is where i will have it most of the time

You might find some of the replies a little slow this weekend. A lot of us are in Laughlin at the AVI. Also i used to have a 73-74 glencoe with a jacuzzi. Deep v in the front made the boat real nice to drive is somewhat choppy water but also made it slower. If your looking for a nice boat to have a lot of good times in you have it.

Nice boat my, buddy is tring to build one. Sounds like you have a valve problem. Could be a bent valve, broken spring or a rocker arm is off. It shouldn't be a big problem. The first thing I would do is pull the valve covers.

if you haven't fixed this already check the vacuum ports on the carb if it has vacuum caps they tend to crack and its hard to seem them some times with the naked eye. more rpm more vacuum more suction to get past the caps if there cracked or leaking. to much air can make a motor do funny things i had that same prob on a ford 390 it ran great till around 2600 to 3k ( on a low geared tuck) and then it started popping out of the carb bogging and struggling.... found i blew a pcv line before the valve and it was getting to much air

Don't know how I missed this one.
Not a bad idea to pull the valve covers for an inspection, but you need to double check the timing and inspect all the ignition components before you start adjusting on the carb.

i wouldn't adjust the carb just inspect it realy good visuly the carb vac ports and base gasket or just do the old school spray it with starter fluid to check for vac leaks then i would pull the valve cover i remember how pissed i was when i pulled my valve covers off then my timing cover to check the chain just to find that i had a vac leak
