Title: 1981 Eliminator Daytona 19' jet
Post by: Beaveretriever on September 29, 2012, 08:27:53 PM
Ok so after a little break from jet boats, I have officially returned and am doing so in style.

Here are the details that I know about:
New paint applied in 2009 by a painter named "Parker"
The pump is in good shape and powder coated candy red
The trailer was boxed in around the same time as the paint on the boat. The trailer is a red fully boxed in competitive trailer with white and purple pin stripe and LED lights.
The boat has a full rail kit from the back to the front with a throttle mounted on the rails.
The bottom has a "bubble" or "spoon" in front of the pump on the center keel.
Here are some pictures. Enjoy

So, are you going to shoot for the recommended maximum HP range?  ;D

Great looking float.

You only got a couple weeks to get it ready for its first event.  >:D

Well as of now that plans are just to clean up the inside with some soap and water  8). I might pull the motor out of the flatty for now so i can get her wet. The front buckets might need to change because they are a little snug for my big ass. If someone buys my boat with complete then i will build another motor in the 461-496 range, maybe a tad higher  ;D. If everything goes right im going to try and make Avi, but if not then hopefully around Halloween time.

A little quick update.  I sold my seats and tank out of the daytona and picked up some stainless Russell gunwale tanks and put some new seats on order. Today I drove out to canyon lake and picked up a very nice ready to run 468. Im going to slide the motor rails back and move my seat rails. I need a very few things to complete the boat for now. I am going to be looking for a big pan for this motor. Hopefully soon I can finish the interior, but I need to sell a few more thinhs like my gauges, wink wink.

Update:
I did a little more work on the boat this last weekend. Madskillz let me use his house for storage for a couple of days and let me pick his brain on the removal of my pump and intake. Thanks to Willowog for giving me an intake. The boat is prepped and ready to go to harold at R&D marine to have the new intake set. When i was pulling the boat apart i noticed that i have a S.S impeller, but im not sure the size. The intake will be at harolds first to get machined for a ride plate and shoe and then the boat will go down to get the intake set. I have taken some measurements for my seat mounts and rail kit. That along with the interior will be getting done while the boat is at the shop. Hopefully when the boat is back from harolds ill have seats ready to install and then re-wire. I hope to have it done for the March get together in Parker. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well a little update. I just dropped the boat off at R & D marine to have the intake set. I installed the rail kit and the two new carbon fiber buckets I bought. The boat should have an intake in it and set by the weekend. I have just about everything I need to finish putting it together out side of a few little items and interior. Hopefully I make it for the march trip. Here are a couple pictures

How much are you spending to have the intake set and installed? I'm researching costs to see if I can go there before the start of the season.
Thanks

The cost will vary depending on what you want done and how extensive the work. Mine wasnt cheap because I did all the right stuff and then some. I had it machined for a shoe/ride plate, so i had to buy all that stuff. There was more fiberglass work that needed to be done than thought. it will cost you about 275 for the set. then the price goes up from there.

Thanks Beav

If I'm going to do this, I too will do it right. I'm wondering if I can do it all for under $2k. I figure I'll need different intake, machine work, ride plate, shoe, shaft, drive line, SS impeller will kick the price way up. I'm open to used HP parts if their available. The outside of my pump is sweet, 9 vane agressor bowl, HP steering nozzle and PD.
Title: Re: 1981 Eliminator Daytona 19' jet
Post by: Beaveretriever on January 30, 2013, 11:44:21 AM
2K might not get you there with everything. A SS impeller will use most of that money right up unless you can find a used one, but it will still set you back 6-800 bucks. You can have your intake machined, ride plate, shoe and installed for under 2K, im not sure what a pump rebuild will cost you but i would bet in the neighborhood of 6-800 as well. I have the intake that came out of my daytona with a ride plate, shoe and even a loader that you could modify to work. OM if you are intersted. I only removed the intake and stuff because i needed a back seat and the Berk R intake had been modified to be low profile.

Well some more progress on the ol daytona. I got my boat back from R&D marine saturday afternoon. The intake is fully installed and set. I wasnt able to work on the boat sunday due to the super bowl. During this week I will be installing the pump and getting the motor plates all dialed in. Then hopefully by the weekend I can have a motor in it and start plumbing and wiring it all up. Its coming along and will go together a lot faster now.

I just have a big ass laundry list of things to do to get it ready. There is no need to rush it.

As for the ram horn bucket. The ram horn bucket allows the boat to back up. Since the race nozzles, or in thos case a old school version of a race nozzle, they do not have a reverse nozzle. The ram horn diverts water towards the front of the boat letting back up slighly or stay still, like neutral.

Well just a quick little update. I thought about mounting the tanks in the side sponsons. I made the brackets ans was almost ready to install them then I felt the bottom of the boat. The boat is super light lay up and the bottom is pretty thin. So after some searching and measuring I decided to go with a stack tank. I surprisingly have a good amount of room in the boat. I was able to find a bitchen set up moon stack tanks. They do not have a big diameter tank which is good for room. Here are the only pictures I have since the tanks are still in boise idaho.

Well lets see its been a little bit since I posted about the boat.

I havent done a ton of work yet. My daughter was in town from texas and then the parker trip. But I have been collecting parts.

I had a picture of my stack tanks I picked up but I got them set up in the boat with my daughters help amd I think they will work just fine. I had to trim down my steering shaft and im going to move the seats forward a little bit. Here are a couple pics. Oh also I was able to get some headers. I still have mine foe sale also if anyone is interested. Also the puke tank is coming off the back of the tanks. That's just to much going on.

Where to start. A lot of work has happened in the past few weeks since I last posted. The motor was pulled and a new/used moroso 10qt pan was installed. I mounted the tanks front and rear seats again, had the front seats covered, changed the steering shaft length, hooked up all the calgo steering, made some transom plates, mounted msd box, installed the new injection and pump, new front timing chain cover, the back seat is getting covered as I type this, built a new throttle cable bracket and started figuring out the plumbing. I still need to wire it and finish plumbing it. Should be ready for avi.

you might be able to handle it this trip. by next trip it will be a whole other story. You should call up chris and see if you can barrow the K boat motor thats really the only way you might have a chance. lol

Dont forget your glasses for AVI  >:D

I got my backseat last night. This weekend is thrash time. I have some stuff still left but the most important thing will be the wiring. All of my gauges are mechanical and the only wires from the front of the boat are the bilge switches, 12v power, and push button start. The rest of the wires will be in the rear of the boat for the MSD. All the water and fuel lines are plumbed. Hopefully everything goes smooth and ill be done with enough time to get her nice and shiny for AVI. Here are a few pictures that I took

this isnt the best picture of the rear seat but for the money i couldnt beat it, plus the fronts are looking good so the backseat will too

its a little tight but there is about 7" of room between the back of the front seats and the front of the rear. I did alot of work to the plates that the seats bolt to so that i could maximize the leg room. Im about 5-11" and 270 i fit back there. I would want to sit in it all damn day. But i dont have friends bigger than me that will ever sit in the back. Its mainly for my daughter and the soft cooler :-)

Well its 430 am. My brother and I have been up almost a straight 24hrs but the boat is wired and plumbed. She cranks over. Tomorrow (sunday) im going to hit it hard. Im going to add fuel and water to the baby and see what she sounds like. I have to button things together and clean it really good for AVI. Those are my sunday plans.

The boat is almost done. We fored it up tonihht and she ran. I did a quick tune on the injection. There is a video but im not sure how to put it up. There are a few critical things left to do but its all coming together.

I will have to check on that. I bought the trailer already done. I think the rims are eagle rims with a low profile tire. I can get all the info tonight when im working on it.

Shouldn't a smaller pill lean it out?
Title: Re: 1981 Eliminator Daytona 19' jet

I believe the bigger the pill the leaner the burn because it allows more fuel to return to the tank and less pressure in the injection system.
Title: Re: 1981 Eliminator Daytona 19' jet
Post by: Beaveretriever on May 07, 2013, 07:47:30 AM
Little brother you are correct.

The injection works in fuel pressure. So a bigger pull allows more fuel to return to the tank and not down the injector nozzles. The smaller the pill the higher the pressure and the more fuel to the nozzles. It wprks completely backwards from a xarb. The cool part is I only need to change one pill verses 8 jets like on a carb set up O0

Ok got it. i was thinking the pill changed the amount of fuel delivered, not the fuel returned. cool deal. now get that fucker ready to hit the water!!!

Are you running dry headers? A good friend of mine is running a hilborn mechanical injection on a sbc 400 on alcohol in his Datsun drag truck and does all his tuning by egt's and plug readings. He has a setup he got from jegs that puts a probe in both collectors and has a live temp read out from both on a little box mounted on his cage. Pretty neat set up.

I am running dry headers. Im basically doing the injection for the cool factor. I have the tunning down pretty good, not great since this is my first time playing with them. I have done tons of reading about them and how they work and how to tune them. Maybe after a few trips ill look into some sort of O2 sensor or a way to fine tune them so i can go really fast. Thanks for the info ill keep it in mind

Well I think that im going to keep this thread going for the ol Tickle my pickle. This was the original build thread so I might as well keep it and post everything related to my Daytona here. Maybe it will be easier for people to find it as well as pictures.

Here is the latest video I made of it. I posted it up once but then it stopped working.

Nice !  I need to hang around Dave more, I just might learn something.

Do you match the pump flow rate to your maximum  HP / RPM ratings and tune from there ? I need to pay more attention.
Looking forward to seeing you guys at the river !!!

The pump is flowed for max pressure at RPM. From there you tune the injection for the motor using cam specs and motor specs. They are really simple once you can grasp the concept of how they work. I think that they are easier to tune than a pair of carbs. I run smaller injection nozzles than most people but that is a trick I was told to make them more drivable. Mine seems to do just fine unless the weather changes drastically during the day. Like the last big river trip when the monsoon came in on our way back. The stack injection, well any injection for that matter, that is run on gas is super sensitive. I have heard that with Alcohol or E85 the tune up can be off a little bit more and the effects aren't as great. An E85 conversion would be easy for me, but I like being able to fill up where ever im at.

I've always loved the mechanical injection setups.  They look sweet.  Are you going to drive a fuel pump off the front of the motor or can you do a high pressure electrical pump?

With Mechanical fuel injection like mine you have to run a mechanical pump cam driven or driven by RPM. The pump is linear based on engine RPM. An electrical pump only flows one speed and one rate all the time. Electrical pumps are fine with a electronic fuel injection since the injectors open and close with a computer. The mechanical set ups are always open and they use pressure (flow rate) to control engine speeds and demands.

You might want to try Bergeron in AZ. They make flat bottom stuff. you might be able to make something like it though. Its pretty simple. I will look around and see if I can find anyone making something like it. I can also take more pictures of the set up if you want to attempt to build it.

Come to think of it. MadSkillz here on the boards is a great fab guy and is making a similar pedal to the lighting set up. There is a bracket that bolts to the stringer and offsets the throttle. You would have the same pedal that I have. Just mounted differently.
