Title: 1991 Lavey Craft Sebring Mod VP
Post by: INTHERED on March 02, 2010, 08:33:22 PM
I am new to the site and wanted to share the project that I have been working on for the past 6 months. Over the summer I sold my Carrera and bought a 1991 Lavey Craft Sebring Mod VP. The boat had a ceased LS6 BBC and a tired American Turbine pump that had one time been blueprinted by GS Marine. The initial plan was to rebuild the motor and freshen up the boat, but that plan was short lived. Over the winter the boat was gutted and every piece of it was redone including gel coat, interior, engine, pump, stereo, and trailer. The guys at Jet Boat Plus have been helping me with the build. I am going to post some pics of the work that has been done so far. Check out www.jetboatplus.com and look on the Current Projects page for more detailed pictures. Hope you like it!

This is what the boat looked like when I bought it.

To start the rebuilding process the boat was completely disassembled. Every piece of hardware was removed to be powder coated, all of the wires were taken out of the boat, what was left of the LS6 was torn down, the pump was taken apart to be rebuilt, and the trailer was stripped down to a bare frame.

All of the hardware in the boat was powder coated black, the trailer was modified with a new style tongue and flip wheel, got fat 66"x9" fenders, and was shot gloss black. While the boat was off of the trailer the entire deck received new gel coat due to fading and burning from sitting out. The entire boat was then color sanded and buffed back to its original shine.

I was told when I bought the boat that there were only two Sebrings ever made with a jet. That was the main reason that I wanted to build the boat... just to have something different that isn't seen everyday. I have done a bunch of research and have never been able to find any info on the other one.

The next step for me was to tackle the wiring disaster that had accumulated over years of people splicing and adding wires wherever they saw fit. Every single wire was removed from the boat and I started fresh. A new set of Auto Meter carbon fiber gauges was added along with a custom made switch panel. A couple cool touches were thrown in including an old school deck mounted boost gauge (blower to follow) and a new hidden fuse box behind the dash.

The pump was the next phase of the build that was tackled. Matt Letcher tuned up the bowl and a billet 5 blade AA impeller was added along with a droop snoot. The pump also features a hydraulic Place Diverter, ride plate, and rudder. Every piece was sandblasted and powder coated black. Some pieces were polished out to add contrast and every nut and bolt was replaced with stainless button heads and polished. We were definitely happy with the finished product.

Motor Build: I bought the boat with a seized LS6 in it... The only thing that was reused was the block. Block was bored .30 over, decked, and honed, and features a Scat 4.25 forged crank with Scat forged H beam rods and JE 8.5:1 forged flattop pistons, file fit rings, Doug Herbert custom grind solid roller cam, Pro Comp aluminum heads,  Scorpion roller rockers, Blower Shop 250 blower set up for 8 lbs of boost, Blake Carburetors 1050 Dominator, Holley blue fuel pump with Street Avenger regulator, full Pro Comp ignition system with 6al box, and EMi Thunder exhaust with stainless S pipes. Entire motor is AN lined (water lines for headers will be done soon). Future plans include an oil cooler. We haven't finished breaking it in yet... Last trip out we ran mid 70's at 5,000 RPM and at that point we were only making 1 lb of boost. Can't wait to see what it does when its done breaking in.

Along with all of the exterior mods and trailer restore came a bunch of work on the interior. Every piece of hardware was removed and powder coated black, the boat received all new black carpet, the teak ski lockers were sanded and stained black, the original interior was in great shape and after two days of scrubbing looks and feels new. As an added bonus a complete stereo system was added to the boat including (2) 6x9s, (4) 6.5s, (2) 12in subs, an Alpine head unit, as well as a 1,000 watt 5 channel amp.  I was pleasantly surprised to hear how nice it all sounded in the boat. The pump was also placed in the boat and looks really nice with all of the black accents.

Well... I saved up some money and got some more plumbing accomplished this week. I had bungs welded onto the t off of the blower manifold so that the water lines could be done in stainless line. Matt from Jet Boat Plus did a great job building some custom brackets that come off of the bell housing to hold the new oil cooler. The oil filter was moved to a remote location and the entire system was plumbed with AN fittings and line. While everything was torn apart, a new polished set of angled valve covers and breathers were bolted up and look really nice.

Had a couple guys ask for some pictures of the boat in the water. This is what it currently looks like. On this day the engine and pump builder took the boat out and made a 5,500 RPM pass, built 5 lbs. of boost, and ran into the low 80's. There is still more pedal to go. I am currently working on getting my hands on an 8-71 blower. Check back in a couple of weeks... There may be a new top half on here!

I just got the 8-71 back today from Mooneyham! It is a Weiand case and intake, but features all Mooneyham internals. I want to say thanks to Rick and Monty who spent the last two days thrashing to finish it for me so I can take it out to Havasu this weekend and put it on. We set it up for around 9lbs of boost so it should be a nice step up from the 250. Also went down and had my Dooley scoop powder coated black to match my other one... It came out just as nice.

Spent the last week getting the new blower setup installed on the boat and running. We hit a few snags along the way with the idler pulley mount and had to have a couple pieces machined, but besides that it all went pretty smoothly. I tried something a little different and built a bracket to mount the regulator off of the front of the scoop so I can always look back and see the gauge. It looks cool, hopefully it will stand up to the beating that hardware always takes on boats. We fired it up and broke it all in on the launch ramp with no issues. Then Havasu was blown out all weekend and we were unable to go and run the boat in some decent water to see where we are at. The boat sounds great and felt extremely fast and responsive in the short amount of time that it was on the water. I will update with some numbers when possible.

The final trim pieces were constructed to finish off the interior of the Lavey. The bottom half of the old hatch was used as a kick panel around the base of the engine and then an old school v-drive blower guard was mounted to the kick panel. The top half of the old hatch was cut, fabricated, and re-wrapped using the original interior pieces. Then Matt from Jet Boat Plus built some custom brackets to mount the trim piece to the back two seats. This piece closed the hole between the two seats and keeps the water coming in from the exhaust off of all the electronics. Overall the pieces came out extremely clean and keep the boat fully functional for passengers.

Thank you very much! Here are some pictures of my first full day on the lake. Boat ran great all day. Made a bunch of 5k passes and a couple at 5,500 with quite a bit of pedal left. I think the boat has the capability to spin 6k, which will be pretty impressive considering it has a 5 blade AA. With the droop and the 4 degree up-wedge the boat throws a pretty impressive roost too.
