I am also new to this site and have already found it to be a wealth of info. I purchased this 1976 pioneer 19 foot in california in early august and have hauled it home to B.C. for a total restoration from the ground up It has a 460 in it and the tag on the pump is a bit hard to read but I think it says JG-A it is my winter project
-
PICS?
-
Im trying had to get my daughter to show me how to resize them these are taken the day we tried it out to buy on a resovoir near grass valley
-
Thats a good looking boat, but wheres the project?
-
sandblast paint new bunks rewire trailer, sand hull new 3 color paint polish jet polish all motor aluminum new engine paint new chrome goodies on engine new carpet new interior etc etc etc etc
-
are you media blasting (Baking soda, glass, etc) or sand blasting
-
sand blasting trailer but I am going to strip the hull with ctri strip I have already tried it and it seems to work good but will not harm the fiberglass the reason for stripping is that the previous owner painted it himself his first try and there are large runs everywher and sanding is such a tedious job that i thought strip then prime and block by hand but I am open to all suggestions
-
Nice boat!
-
looks good..
-
good looking "project", welcome to the site and be sure to obey the rules-=--post pics of progress ;D
-
today was finally the day ,my daughters boyfriend and I got the boat off the trailer and the motor pulled. it went real well although I was nervous with it swinging in the air when we had to cross the yard to the shop. now on to paint stripping then new paint .Thanks Tom for the advise on splitting the motor from the pump sorry to interupt your lunch
-
I need some advise from you engine gurus. While I have the motor and pump out of the boat should I do anything to either. The working engine hour meter say 348 hours and the boat starts and runs fine . it think it is a fairly stock 460 and Im going to put new gaskets in to stop the oil leaks and some other dress up items but Im wondering if I should put in things like new bearings or have the heads looked at. Should I rebuild the pump thanks for any suggestions
-
Farmers have all the neat tool love that engine hoist ;D
-
Might want to have the valve springs checked and take a look at the cylinder walls and bearings.

I would put a set of aluminum heads on it. I guess it depends on your end result goal, fast or family? If your tearing it all the way down May as well rebuild it all. Then you Know what everything is and it's what you want.
-
just looking for fun and reliable at this point . we tore it apart and it is all super clean inside except the #2 intake lifter is worn to a cup and the others are all flat with not even scuff marks from the cam lobes the push rods roll straight on a flat cast iron surface any ideas?????? cylinder walls all show no wear. I want to check the bearing clearances and read in another thread that jet boats need more clearance what kind of number should I be looking for. and is plastigauge the right way to do it
-
Plastiguage is the ONLY way to do it as far as main and rod bearing clearances. My concern for you is the severely worn lifter (s) and were'd all that metal go? Or through! (That would be a concern). Gonna require a hot tank and thorough block/head cleaning to be sure, IMHO. The cam is wiped, at least on one lobe, probably.
New cam/lifters, obviously in order, and proper break in on that. I would replace the valve springs anyway while at it, as Marc said.
Personally, I would ensure the seat pressure on the springs meets spec for the cam you're gonna use .Those are all available as a kit, usually. Marcsrollin can hook you up on that! I would put in new main and rod bearings anyway and a crank polish while its down. Cheap insurance. Always polish the crank on new mains and rods.
As far at what clearances to look for on the short block? Dave at A&D, Ralph, or Barry (Obnoxious1) would be the pros, but I beleive if you go .002-.005 over spec you should be fine on a boat engine. I'd lean towards the .002 side, but just me.
Topm posted something recently about ring gap too, but doesn't sound like you need to mess with new rings/pistons.
Ray
-
If you lost a lifter and a cam lobe, which sounds more than a little likely. A complete tear down is in order, the metal that made up the cam lobe and the face of the lifter is hardfaced iron and very abrassive and may have torn up the crank, no need to panic though, probably polish it up and get the clearances you desire...
The best way to check clearances on the rod and main are to use micrometers, plastigage is OK as long as things are freshly machines and really clean, but for used, there are too many variables i.e.; tapered wear patterns, out of round journals, scoring on the surface Yada Yada...
Have a qualified machinist take a gander at what you got..My pet peeve is doing sh!t twice...
You have it this far it would be a shame to stop just short....The piece of mind will be worth it in the end...
We already made this mistake on Chromeys cruiser...That was a 460 also...Live and learn from others mistakes... ;)
GT
-
thanks guys sounds like good advice I was kind of figuring to do all that . Havent pulled the cam yet but im sure from the 1 bad lifter that it is focked.what if anything should i do to the pump berk 12jb-a
-
marcsrollin check your pm ;D
-
well after 2 weeks of applying paint stripper, scraping ,washing and sanding we are down to the original gel coat, snot green.next tear out the carpet which is glued in with some kind of construction adhesive then on to primer and blocking ;D Engine block going to machine shop tomorrow for whatever is needed have new cam, lifters ,valve springs and such for rebuild. waiting to see what size bearings and rings I need
-
looking good! i'd go with that green and some yellow, and go john deere style...you know being a farmer n all right? ;)
also on a sidenote that is an interesting loader i see....maybe just the angle of the pic idk
-
after discovering the green if I did not already have $1000 bucks worth of paint I would have been more careful stripping and just polished out the gel coat. and as far as I know (not much) it is a stock berk JB-A jet
-
thanks Paul Lakes only for all the time on the phone today your advise was priceless.I feel more confidant thet iam on the right track now . I have managed to find the cam you suggested and all the other parts thanks a  :thumbup:gain
-
looking good Gordy awsome job bud ;D

I am such a dumbass :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:I was cutting a hole in my dash to mount my stereo head unit and the flattest place was to use 2 of the existing gauge holes and redrill them elsewhere. I measured and setup to do it grabbed the 2 inch hole saw and the phone rang . I carried the hole saw over to the phone set it down talked on the phone and then proceded back to the boat picked up a 2 and 1/4 inch hole saw put in the chuck and drilled the hole as soon as i pulled it out I realized what i had done . I am so stupid . :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:Spent the next couple of hours refiberglassing the plug back in the hole then filling it so that I can redrill it 2 inches did I tell you how stupid I am :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:. Anyway tommorrow Finally time to prime the beast.
-
You are human are you not? :)
-
Still looking good GORDY comming along great keep going

Been there done that, that's why I had 2 5/8" gauges in the Renegade.... :P I "assumed", you all know what that means.....I got to spend an extra $250 on gauges... :banghead:
(boat was already painted)

Ray
I miss the farm back east kinda....... the heavy equipment and storage :'( Pops won't let me steal his backhoe and bring it out here, lol. We also never had a neighbor's daughter that looked like YOURS though! JEEZUZ! Now I know where all the Farmer's Daughters jokes came from.........
-
well after about 150 hours of block sanding 2 coats of urethane primer 1 coat of urethane sealer I am finally ready to start on color. Tomorrow some Pearl white then Metallic blue then interclear. Then start on the graphics. So glad the sanding is done for now ;D
-
finally some real progress today three coats of pure solid color base white on the lower part of the hull 3 coats of pearl white on the upper part of the hull then 3 more coats of Mettalic blue on the upper part of the hull. i was also going to put on 2 coats of interclear on top of that today but due to low shop temp and med 70 degree reducer Ill save that till morning ,want to make sure all the solvent has evaporated to avoid problems down the road, still within 24 hours. i absolutly love the Kustom Shop paint from TCP Gobal in SanDiego. It cost me about half of what PPG is and sprays like a dream. Only ran into a couple of problems , even afterwashing 4 times and wiping with grease and wax remover then using a tack cloth I still got a bunch of fisheyes in the base white on the transom. i even had fisheye remover in the paint. but I just waited a few minutes and sanded them out retacked and sprayed with no further problems . Heres a few pics but I didnt discover till part way thru that i had no card in the camera. Next start laying out the graphics and painting them on ;D Even got my 78 year old dad down to help
-
looking really good gord....wish i had them kind of patients!!!! keep us posted!
-
That blue looks great! Id love to see the combo of the pearls of the lower and upper hull out in the sun. Looks killer! Great job!
-
the blue is Mystic Blue Metallic urathane basecoat a premixed color they sell i used pure solid base on the lower white and used the pearl under the metallic to make it pop. Have used pearl white on hulls before but dont like the way it sometimes looks
-
heres a couple with 3 coats of clear. now a few days away from this project then back sanding :banghead:
-

that looks good farmergord dam i wish i had room like that
-
Heres a few out in the sun today cant wait to finish this and get it wet
-
Gordy that looks great.
What did it cost for the materials?
-
3qts primer sealer,4qts white,2qts blue 3 gal clear roughly $600.00 including reducers and hardners. You could get by with 2 primer and 2 white for bottom and 2 color for top and 1 gal of clear. I ordered more to put white under my mettalic and more clear to put on top of the graphics after thier painted on plan to do 9 coats of clear 3 at a time
http://www.tcpglobal.com/
-
Jim Brock heres the picture of the bellhousing you asked for
-
Gordy thats for the pm your boat is looking sweet your work is awsome mine is almost to ppg primer an then it goes to buddy who bought out a ppg warehouse in havasu with a booth he is shooting it for me for the cost of the clear and sorry been staying out of the posting dont want to piss anybody off But I will keep checking your posts bud great job on boat ;)
-
Boat is looking great! 6 coats of clear....you're the man.
-
actually going to end up with 9 coats probably overkill :screwy:
-
Looks great Farmer, really makes me anxious to start mine. I dig that blue
-
What ar your plans for graffics? or are you going to make us wait until it's finished?
-
Ive been wondering when someone was going to ask. My wife is an artist and at first I wanted a big titted naked woman airbrush mural on the bow but she didnt think that was as good an idea as I did. ;D So I have always wanted a hotrod with old school flames so that is what she is going to do on the bow . Then I bought her some pinstriping brushes and shes been messing around with them. So there will be pinstiping as well not sure what or where yet.
-
right on I can't wait to see it.
-
well after 6 weeks of not touching the boat we finally found time today to get back to it. time to practise doing flames on an old hood I sprayed blue when I did the boat. My artist wife layed them out her first ever attempt, then we sprayed them yellow then she hilighted with orange but she left her airbrush at school so had to use my touchup gun . Cant get as fine a spray with it so will refine technique on the boat. she wasnt happy with the end so she tried to cover it up when i snapped the picture. Also stripped the old seat frames and started to build new ones as the old are to rotten .Tomorrow the block goes to the machine shop so that process can begin. Finally some new progress.
-
Gordy its looking cool tell wify that just because its not perfect it still looks cool . It looks like she is having fun and thats what boating is about ,Even if your in the build stage   ;)you guys keep it up awsome
-
Nice Gord! Lookin sweet! And being a painter you can never have to much clear. 9 coats is going to be deep and rich lookin. Nice build
-

For gaskets, it's hard to beat Fel Pro for the price, the only thing I'd suggest is using the rubber valve cover and oil pan gaskets with the crush proof sleeves:

im running a 460ci=500hp-alun heads-comp cam #34-336-4 right now-torky son of a gun=75+
did have a ford racing cam with stock heads-fms-m-6582-c460 i think that was the #-i would double check that # to be sure-
-
with that ford cam it ran pretty darn good
-
took the covers off the seat frames today to get ready for upholstry and got a nasty surprise. All rot .fortunatly it s not a huge problem to whip up a new set. Started by making a bending jig then bent 6 layers of 4 mil waterproof marine ply, then cut out the other parts out of half inch, should be done by the weekend but this damn farming is starting to cut into my boat working time
-
Dam you go Gordy you da Man awsome work as for farming all the girls next door Ill feed the neigber chicks ;D ;D ;D thats what buds are for 8)
-
a few pics of my finished seat frames. trying to make my may 30th appointment for upholstry but its not looking good. farming way to busy right now damn Id rather work on the boat but oh well must pay the bills.Machine shop says block and heads ready friday hopefully some time to work on it this weeknd
-
Dam Gordy nice work looks awsome
-
it seems that it never ends Machine shop called and it seems my motor has a cracked head. Now I have to find a replacement set.Budget long gone oh well. :banghead:
-
need to update as there seems to be a lot of work happening my seats are at the upholstry shop ( my cousins business) he does only hotrods and has a 2 year waiting list so hes fitting me in .the good part is he has no room in the shop for the boat so he will come down here to do the carpet so theres no rush to get the boat off the dolly. I am awaitind about 20 boxes of various things for the boat including everything for the motor which is now back from the machine shop complete with $2100.00 bill attached. Also have been spendind what seem to be endless hours polishing aluminum. It has cured me of wanting to polish the jet.so heres a few pics have also been glass beading and thanks to the most understanding wife baking the hitemp clear in her oven
-
also spent a couple of hours last week laying out the flames
-
then today we sprayed the yellow then she airbrushed the orange then I focked up the clearcoat. the sun came out and I didnt realize how warm it got and when I sprayed the second coat of clear it flashed. so we moved it back in the shop sprayed what I had mixed and tommorrow we sand with 1000 grit and spray another gallon of clear whats another $100 at this stage. JRORK I now understand your frustration when you did yours just when you think you might be done with paint something happens and its sand and spray again.
-
more pics

Too bad I'm not allowed to have flames on a boat..........

after a forced 1 week delay due to injury I got back at it yesterday with the last 3 coats of clear for a total of 15 now on to color sanding and buffing. Oh crap my july 10 holidays are coming fast so much to do :banghead:
-
went to the chromer and the powdercoater today to pickup some bling.I searched everywhere for the hardin Marine valve covers and finally found them on Craigslist in Nevada. I now have everything to reassemble the boat and trailer . now just the time to do it by July 10 ;D
-
Looking good Gordy!

-
Wow, you sure are making us look like slackers! Great looking float.
-
now im starting to see real progress got the steering, gauges and wiring harness in . Yesterday my cousin did the carpet hopefully he does the seats this week. tomorrow we put the motor back together
-
the pics dont show it well but after 2 days of color sanding and buffing i am now officialy done my paint and for my 1st attempt at base clear Im really happy and it only took me 7months. 13 days till holiday still lots to do.
-
going to finish the engine tomorrow and get it in ,got all the fittings back on the boat, 1 tank in ,its starting to resemble a boat
-
Looking good Gord! You should be able to make your "Holiday"
Dizzy's even on the right end, things are looking up around here..... :sly:
Ray
-
well it doesnt run yet but its in the hole. TWICE, forgot to put the starter on the first time. have to finish wiring and water lines then run it then pull it again to hook up the driveline 12 days till holidays and Im still trying not to neglect the farm too much
-
Do you boat on dusty rivers? :D
Just poking fun....Looks badass, I always caught crap for putting my air filter on the raceboat, until we did some passing and then all laughing stopped....
Are those valve covers chrome, or polished? Damn.
GT
-
the air filter was a Christmas present from my wife nuff said >:D the valve covers are aluminum but I sent them to the chromers to make them sparkle
-
it runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Congratulations!!! Another Milestone passed, Your kicking ass.
-
your golden gordy
-
Great news!!!
Ray
-
I admit defeat. after I dont know how many 15 hour days in a row today I am forrced to admit my boat will not be ready for my holiday.cylinder 2 has no spark changed wires cap plug still nothing. after mixing and matching 4 sizes of push rods it has 2 cylinder with noisy lifters probably colapsed hopefully thats all.it wont draw fuel from the tanks even through new lines but if you take the main line and stuff it down the filler neck it runs fine, probably a pickup issue. battery cables and a few other small things still to do but only 2 days left and 100 acres of hay to bale still I dont have any more time left maybe next year :banghead:
-
Call Rick ;D Just Kidding
-
well it turned out sort of ok after all we got to the lake on Sat the 10 and it was glass calm all day ,felt real bummed out . Sunday was the same ,my good friend and chief mechanic Dale showed up at noon and we sat around looking at calm water discussing the possibility of catastrophic failure and what we could do, and decided the best thing was drain the oil cut open the filter and see what was in it. by the time 2:30 had rolled around we had decided to drive 5 hours home see what we could do and maybe bring back the boat. so My daughters boyfriend (also a mechanic) Dale and myself drove back to the farm drained the oil checked the filter and not a speck of filings anywhere. We then dove in pulled the motor hooked up the driveline ran water fuel lines made up battery cables ,did alot of other finishing installed the seats that my cousin had finished late friday night then lifted it up and loaded it back on the trailer and at 5 after 12 we headed back to Osoyoos a 5 hour drive that only took 3hours and 45 min on the way back got there had breakfast then put the boat in the water.heres a couple of pics in the water cause Ray says a pic on the water is worth a thousand on the trailer. So here it was for a half hour on the water.we were out cruising and running about 3000 rpm and a sudden pop then it died. it started right away and idled but I saw right away no oil pressure. Towed it back put it on the trailer pulled the dizzy and as we thought dist gear pin sheared. then taped a 5/16 socket on a long extnsion and found that the oil pump drive shaft seems to have corkscrewed so it was fun while it lasted.tomorrow ill pull the motor and see whats up in the bottom end.Ill post more pics of the interior and other finish later
-
Looks great in the water!!! Sorry your day didn't end well.
-
That really sucks after that marathon thrash session. I think alot of us can relate to that story.
Any chance of getting it fixed and running it before it gets too cold?
-
Does look sweet!
Hope it's nothing major though :banghead: Been there, done that.......
Ray
-
welll it looks like I may have dodged a large expensive bullet. we pulled the motor and rolled it over and it looks like pump failure I think to much pump for a stock oil pan .the pump shaft corkscrewed and sheared off . the only metal we could find was a small bit in the filter.took the main caps off and the bearings are just a uniform grey color and they still had lots of oil on them. Now wait for my new stock pump to arrive and then back to the water. I wonder if my noisy lifters may go away with a pump thats not pumping the pan dry hmm just a thought. what do you guys think any thing else I should check

-
Good job gord I hade no idea of all the work you did I cant wait to see this boat on the water. Aug 7 is the poker run at Harrison lake. We dont run it but its fun to watch the start. then we usually run the river for the day. Let me know if your running by next weekend.
-
Damn i was planning on going to that but i have to fly to Manitoba for a cattle sale this fri sat and sunday .I will be at Cultus the 15 16 and 17 of Aug
-
Very nice work you did   Looks great, and looks like you have a bunch of people waiting to ride in her, so move you arse >:D
-
Put in the new oil pump and a new ready to run MSD ignition and then up to Allouette Lake tonight to break it in it ran great this time.my only concern is at idle after its warmed up the oil pressure is about 30 lbs. then as soon as you give it gas it jumps up to 50 and stays there is this ok????

Sounds OK to me, you may have had hot oil, the viscosity drops and so will the pressures...
What weight oil did you run?
You did an outstanding job on that boat BTW...

well this is becoming a familiar scene ,use the boat for an hour then pull the motor. went to a local lake for 2 days with the boat . put it in and ran great for about an hour then under idle i heard a single ping sound from the back like some thing hitting the driveline, then noticed a lot of oil in the bilge. still had 65 lbs oil pressure so we went in to the dock and started to look at the motor. on the back of the bell housing at the top there is a small inspection cover and it was wet with oil running out from underneath it.I think that the plug on the end of the cam has come out and that was the ping sound because when I picked up the block from the machine shop they said it was odd that that plug was larger than stock and they did not have one so they rooted around in the dumpster , found the old one and reused it and I think it has worked its way out so now I have to pull the motor to fix the problem and clean the oily bilge then I guess Ill rebuild the pump. So much for taking the boat to Eastern Washinton for holidays next week :banghead:
-
finally got time to pull the motor and I was wrong . No sign of where the oil might be coming from. Going to build an engine stand so i can run the motor out of the boat and see whats up what a waste of a summer :banghead:
-
wow....let us know :o
-
Most local auto parts store sell a UV dye and a light. You put the dye in the oil and the light will show exactly where it is leaking from.
-
thanks guys too busy with harvest right now to do anything but maybe in a few weeks :banghead:

I finally found a few hours on Sunday and tackled the oil leak. It turned out to be the pan gasket was too large over the rear bearing cap and pinched outward and you could see right into the pan.An easy fix as I had a new gasket. we put the motor in the boat fired it up and now it has a chirp in the valvetrain. Im thinking rocker arem not getting oil or maybe a dry valve guide, the engine sat all winter without running . any suggestions or other ideas
-
A chirp??? Never heard that one before Gord

thanks thats what I plan to try

Dude, all the problems you are having! Geeze! Sounds like i'm not alone! I finally got mine to work after cursing at it for 6 months. Two motors, fuel pump, re-wire and a bad tank of gas later it's all good. Don't give up buddy. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Loved the build! Can't wait to hear the story of a great weekend!

Nice project........

you were right Dave looks like the cam kit I bought had the wrong lifters in it and thus the wrong ones in the motor from day 1

That really sucks Gord. I guess with the way that the economy has gone everything is assembled and put together in some 3rd world factory with people being paid pennies. We still have to dig deep to pay for parts but there is no pride in workmanship anymore. Glad that you found the problem and I too want to hear about the boat treating you well for a weekend. Keep grinding away.

finally got some time to work on the boat today.polished and installed my new scoop (no more dusty sailin for me Glenn) Then put 4 degees of wedge in and put the jet all back together. Also found the wiring problem in the trailer lights .then continued onn with what is becoming rather a large task,Installing the thru transom headers from Mark, So far we have had to cut the flanges off the tips to get the right angle for the transom also redrill the transom holes bigger and move them down and out as much as possible.move both battery boxes and we are going to have to shorten the tips on the inside and try to get a bendable hose I'm starting to wonder if this will be worth it

Good progress!

nice build Gord. sorry to hear your having engine trouble. my BBC is in the build stage right now. this will be my 3rd boat and 6th engine in 4 years. im hoping this one lasts so i can spend time on the water instead of in the shop. :P :P

got my tips rewelded at the new angle to match the transom. headers installed now on to plumbing[attachimg=1]
-
the boat is ready to go tomorrow I can't believe it. ut I wondered is it normal for the headers to piss water out the weep holes constantly and if not what isw wrong .have a bassett tee with new ball and spring and adjusted the garden hose so it was barely running but no differance.
-
make sure the ball valve is closing. When I first installed mine I could lightly shake the valve and hear the ball rattle. I ended up installing a stainless washer in the valve to act as a shim for the ball/spring.
