Title: New Boater, Leak Question

New to the forums, and boating in general. Just bought my first boat, 1977 Eliminator Sport Cruiser.

Quick question for you guys: Just took it our a few weeks ago and noticed a little too much water in the bilge. Upon further inspection looks like its leaking from one of the bolts on the swim steps as well as from the seal around the jet. The boat had sat for a couple of years in the previous owners garage before I purchased it. So my thinking is that the silicone as well as the gasket may have dried up causing the leaking.

Anybody have any advice on this issue, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated,

Post by: Your Mom on July 10, 2013, 08:50:36 PM: Put your drain plug in and fill the bilge. Tilt the boat back and look outside for leaks. Regular silicone from Home d will work just fine. Sometimes you will get a steady drip from the packing gland at float and might need a slight 1/8-1/4 turn to slow it.

Post by: 77Eliminator on July 12, 2013, 08:48:16 AM: Thanks for the advice and recommendations. Took the swim steps off found the hardware all rusted and bent. Scraped off all the old junk stuff. Put on brand new hardware and 3M silicone.

Taking her out to Parker this weekend. Hope to see some of you out there. I'll post some more pics after the weekend.

Post by: Jet Boat Maloney on August 01, 2013, 12:50:42 PM: The wayy this pump is set back on my new boat I don't think it's ever going to totally seal I just been keeping an eye on it. I think I'm to install a auto bilge pump so I won't be stressing on it.

you should have a float switch on your bilge pump REGARDLESS. then a manual override switch on the dash. this is a 5000% must have for any boat.
