RE: Beach comber
« on: October 17, 2008, 09:29:20 PM »
Is there anybody familar with the 1972 Beachcombers.  I picked this thing up a few weeks ago off of craigs list and I can not find any information about the boat.  The only reason I picked it up is because it was a jet boat.  It has a 455 in it with a Berkley jet.  The boat runs and drives great.  I took it out last weekend and the people that were out on the water got a kick out of it.  I blasted by a couple of people at around 56 mph and they were just plain shocked...  Especially since it looks like an old grandpa boat.  Anybody with any info on this boat, I would appreciate hearing from you...

The guy I bought it off of said it would do 56 mph, but I did not believe him...  Of course that is going off the speedo that is in the boat.  We are gonna ge my cousins jet out and see how fast she really goes.  His boat on GPS is 58 MPH so we will find out shortly..  The motor in this thing is pretty new and it sounds extremely healthy..Not sure how much cam is in it or anything, but she sure does not idle smooth.   ;D  Ah I figure I will play with it for a little bit anyways..It sure is funny seeing peoples face when I fire it before getting dumped in the water...  ;D  and shoot I only paid $1300.00 for it.

Beach Comber was another company that splashed a few others like my Saguaro . I've seen quite a few of them , and alot of them were identical to my Saguaro with very minor exceptions . I saw a boat like this on the road the other day and thought how cool would one of those be with a BB and pump . The reverse passage on your pump blows the Place diverter away !

Only piece of advise . Try not to hot rod that Oldsmobile . They are great torquey motors that will last forever if you keep the revs down . Be nice to it and you'll get you $1300 worth ten fold . Welcome to the site too BTW .

Thanks again!!  I am new to the Jet game, what is the reverse passage your talking about on my pump?  What is a safe RPM range on these 455's?  I am a small block guy.  I have heard not to spin the 455's, so what would be safe and make this thing last.  I noticed this boat seems to shoot a little more rooster than my cousins jet.

The reverse passage is the part of the steering nozzle that hangs down off the end to divert water when you put it in reverse . My hallett had one and worked awsome . The problem is they hang way down , but if it works , leave it alone .

Cool deal thank you for the information..  The boat handles really good, super smooth...  It is a little strange getting used to only having a hand control in this thing.  All the jets I have driven always have had a foot control for throttle.  I just need to get the control smoother and free up the steering.  The steering is real stiff in this thing...  I am gonna throw a new carb on it this weekend and mess with the linkage.  Hopefully gonna dump it back in the water this weekend.   ::)

dont waste your time with the steering, it needs a new helm and if it is stiff it is dangerous. when it breaks you CANT STEER. call tom at jet boat performanc or jim brock. a new helm is about 130 bucks, cheap insurance. just my .02

Just got back off the water with her...  I put a 750 Edelbrock on it and got rid of the quadra junk carb....Those things drive me nuts, they either work well or hardly work at all...  Boy what a difference just doing the carb...  That thing gets out of the whole great...My buddies family has had jet boats since he was a little... All  he can do is laugh every time I hit the throttle...   :D.... I must admit it brings a smile to my face as well...  I still look at the boat sitting in my garage and can't believe it moves the way it does...  I gotta get that steering fixed though,,it's a little scary!!  >:D  I have been surfing through the forum and there are some really awesome people on here... Thanks for all of the comments and the input on my boat....
