Over on Hot Boat Devilman posted some pictures from the drags in Texas dating from the mid '70's. They're really nice shots. This one grabbed my eye. For any of you guys that weren't around to watch the KJ boats run circles or v-bottom BFJ run in the 1/4 you really missed something exciting, kinda like watching the old fuel alterds back in the day on pavement. Always exciting, ill handling, faster than fukin' snot. Took a special breed to shoe one of these for sure... :) Be so nice to find a ton of old footage and transfer it to a digi format so everyone could enjoy them today.

Ok, so I searched the HD and couldn't find the pics of the above boat anywhere. I know they're on there somewhere, just can't find them. I did come across some other Dragstar pics though. Judging from these photos, the above boat either has a heavily modified bottom or is not a Dragstar at all.

This one is owned by a guy up in Colusa and runs in the ME class(if I remember right) @ Red Bluff every year. It's named "A Little Rascal's Ex" It was once the "Duel in the Sun" boat that held a NDBA record of something like 110 MPH. It was once owned by a guy named Wally Albright, who was a child actor in the Little Rascals shows(Notice the ME king sniffing out the competition ;) ):

Except for the white boat above, I didn't take any of these photos myself. I found and saved them from the 'net over the years.

My pleasure! I've snagged tons of old dragboat pics over the years, but very few are jets.
Maybe Old Rigger will chime in with an ID on that boat a couple of posts up.

Awsome pics . I think your right about that first one not being a rogers . The other rogers dont have half the pod the first one does and the rogers have more freeboard than the first picture too.

A fellow looking like a homeless person came in the MPD shop one evening and asked "if we installed engines in jet boats". I told him "yes" and he then asked "if we would install the engine in his jet boat". I said "sure", thinking to myself that it was all a joke. He then left.
Several weeks later the same fellow showed up driving a nice shiny pickup with an injected aluminum KB hemi sitting in the bed and a brand new red & white Rogers Drag Star hitched on behind. He said "this is the engine that I'd like you to install in that jet boat". I almost fell over!
We built the rails and engine mounts, and installed the engine. During that era we also built some of the cav plate hardware used on the Drag Stars, but that stuff was usually installed in Roger's shop. I don't remember for sure if we did any of the other rigging on that boat, but I'm thinking that we may have done the pedals/plate controls because I bothered to take a pic of those. After Wally's boat left MPD, I never saw it again, but heard thru the grapevine about him setting the CompJet record.
I am thrilled to see old race boats like this being preserved and, hopefully, kept in top condition.

Have no idea about the boat above with the dropped keel? Maybe someone flipped one over and changed it.

Also, I never knew that Wally Albright was a child actor. Roger never mentioned it and he spoke often of him back in the day. I did a search, Albright acted for a long time, died in '99. Here's the only shot of him that I could find.
I also asked Roger the lasst time I talked to him about the dragstar. I thought I remembered him telling me certain things with it's handeling that sort of killed it, but he said no, it handeled fine. I asked him what was the fastest anyone ran one, '141 and change' but i don't remember who's boat he said it was.

in a thread over on hb where the discussion of the mexican knockoff molds was taking place...you mentioned that the new owner of the hulls has no interest in making new hulls or renting them out....then why did he buy them? does he think they will age like fine wine? I dont care who you are (and i think you will agree with me) ....even if you have these 'golden' molds, it still wont be a rogers, ever.

If you take a close look at this pic, just ahead of the trailer fender and below the tail light of that Econoline, you can see that this hull has sponsons, making it a jet hydro. The paint job seems reminiscent of Sanger with the narrow color bands with fades, but the Sanger jet hydros that I have seen were more of a "tunnel" hydro. This one seems to have just a very small(1/4"?) dropped chine. Of course those might just be the result of reliefs in the hull for recessed cav plates? Would be nice to see more pics........Hondo also made a jet hydro, but it had a much more pronounced gunwale, especially in the rear, where it kind of flared upward. It also was more of a tunnel-hydro design, I think.

well, that's the 64,000 dollar question isn't it? :D Who knows why people do the things they do.
The final figure Roger gave me to buy him out, minus the property which oddly enough was sold to a friend of a friend, was much more than I could afford to pay. Plus it came at a time when I was sick of building boats, rather, I was sick of dealing with the owners of the companys that built boats. That was the third time that I thought of going out on my own, once with my dad and another time...I actually had molds. I thought about it for a long time, talked to Roger about it over and over but in the end I passed. Then a year of so later Roger tells me what he sold everything for, 5K. Hell that was peanuts compared to the price he and I were talking about. lol Still, the 21 and 19TR molds would be a blast to own. Even if I only sold 1 part out of them a year, it'd be a blast. Would the 19tr be as good as or advertised as a Rogers if I had bought them, of course not. I could build them to my liking which I learned from Roger, but they would still not be a Rogers. The 21 maybe. It was the only set of molds that were added to his line up while I was there so I know them very well. I spent days and days in them bringing them up to snuff. I love that deck.
Ah well, what could of been and what is are two different things altogether. ;)

I've read the thread before . I actually shared a few PM's with the original owners son and I got some info about how Jack McClure set the boat up . Jack told me the first boat they sent him was a POS and he told them to shit can it .he gives them a 6 ! :D

Good freakin eyes ! I never noticed that . The Hondos are umungst my favs and unmistakable .

I got to talk to Roger Finney a bit Saturday after the Enduro races and this boat was brought up....he shared some cool stories and he said he has some interesting pictures of it. I hope to see them someday.

The Hass & Correl boat is a Place Craft, The Yellow Sleek Craft is the hull used right before the Aristocraft and tye hydo seems to be ether a sanger or hondo. Roger Weiman ( Rogers Custom Boates) prototyped one in the late 70's Millet drove one @ Longe Beach but it never developed beyond the prototype stage. It rode just like a Roger's once thew sp[onsons got off the water.

Thanks old rigger,thats me driving in the Mammoth shots and holding the bow in the second pic. I was 13 at the time, my cousin was 9, and my uncle would just cut us loose and i'd drive wide open all over that lake. Thats where the whole Roger's thing started for me. If I could find that boat i'd buy it in a heartbeat. Light yellow, lime green metelflake and lime green interior I loved that boat, I would like to add that to the stable of keepers.

Took the family camping about 10 minutes from Mammoth Pools a couple years back. Best fishing ever!!
On two different days I was catching so many trout that the girls had fried em up and I was eating breafast before I was even done fishing. My kids went swimming at "the Pools" but damn that water is cold even in late June. Awesome vacation. I do need to take my boat there some day

I should have known that. :-\ I was in the chat room and wizard612 said he used to be a crew member of Craig Millet's boat and that he had a picture that he wanted to post but wasn't able to figure out how to post it so I offered to post it for him. It's also in the '76 Bonneville thread... he came into the chat room right after you left.

yes, craig and tom (wizard) told me they brought the raspberry out for a skijet class for fun....though it had the same numbers as the newly aquired excaliber....they changed it to 712R (R for Retired)

I looked through a couple of stacks of old slides and if I can figure out how to scan them in using my home scanner I'll work on posting them. They include some of the best So Cal Jet boat racers of the 70's. Dan Duham, the Barrons, Steve King, Mel Bacon, etc. I have over 1,000 slides from Long Beach to the Austin Aqua Festival. Some I have have no clue of. I discovered something interesting though... once I started to drive a boat the pix all dried up. No time to be historian when your trying to keep the boat afloat. Word to the wise, have someone take pix, It's what you will share thirty years from now.

I figured out why I can't get my photos on this thread when I try at home. It's this suckie P-4 computer!!!! It takese too long to load the photo and times out even small files take too long. Good news is I have a buch burned on a disc and will try to get them into the thread from the office next week.

Those are awesome pictures Wizard, thanks for sharing. I see one of those Roger's designed carb scoops and a few mechanical fuel injection systems in those boats. Sweet.

Got a shot of Lowrance Maynard (sp?) at Bluewater. A great running Rodgers trailered in from Texas and wuped mose everyone. The stern of Tom Stolart's (sp?) Warlock is to the right. That's the boat that Team Warlock Boats was named after.

no idea...it was a back shot of the boat on the trailer....cav plates and jaccizi pump....big blown motor with zoomies....couple of vintage dudes hangin around it ;D
now that i think of it, i dont think it was the wild injun....it had a different name....cant recall it though.
