My son is looking at purchasing a boat an another thread on here got me wondering, How would a person go about checking to see if a boat is free and clear of any problems( stolen in California or any other state if DMV does not check )?

You can have the DMV do a title search. I think it costs $10.

Call AAA if you are a member and run the cf number and HIN

Make sure that the sellers name is on the pink slip. Compare his drivers license with the name on the pink. I run into situations where the seller may be the legitimate owner but for whatever reason never got the pink slip changed over because the guy who sold it to him was a friend who still owed him money, etc. or the seller may have a signed pink slip but never went down to the DMV to re-register the boat. What state are you from?

Also compare the VIN on the boat with the one on the pink.

I have always called the dmv with the hin and id numbers before going down to look at boats and used license plates for vehicles. they wont volunteer any info when you call but they can confirm or deny questions, so you give the hin and id number and ask if jackoff is the registered owner of said thing and if the numbers match up, if the registration is current, any leins against it and stuff like that. Never had a problem doin that and it saves alot of time if there are any issues.

In 2008/09, I bought a boat here off SCJB. The seller was in AZ, and the boat and trailer was titled in CA. The last two numbers on the boat title were backwards, (57) and the boat was a ('75). However, there was NO HIN on the boat to check the title number to. AZ Fish and Game issued a new AZ HIN number along with the AZ numbers.

The trailer was a mess too, title plate number and actual trailer plate number was 1 digit off, and No VIN number on the tounge, either. I fixed that part, and lost the (wrong) plate, and everything went through AZMVD without issue.

Another boat trailer had the same VIN number as a boat trailer in Tucson, But it was an '84, mine was a '73, only a 5 digit VIN #.
