Hi all,
Newbie here. Looking for my first boat. Been on the hunt for a couple months & have yet to find something turn key that isn't actually pretty thrashed.
I live in Orange county & have driven to Mariposa & Phoenix & back looking at some prospects & have been pretty disappointed with the disparity between what was described & what condition the boats were actually in...
Traveling to Lake Havasu/Parker this weekend, & arranged to look at a couple of boats.
I was wondering if maybe anyone out there had a line on any rigs out that way that might be worth looking at?
Looking for a 1972-1982 boat. 18-19'. Closed bow. Turn key. I like the Miller & Rogers hulls, but not too set about that.
Got up to $8,500 to spend. Any more than that & the wife will start getting suspicious....

Checked out what I came to Havasu to see, a 73 Rogers. Was in pretty good condition, though it was a repaint & really looking for original gel....... I passed, so, no boat as of yet. If I had picked it up, would have been in the sandbar today...
Was thinking of hitting Kornowski's tomorrow to see if they know of anything out here for sale. (not one of his pieces though, that's waaay out of my range....)

That's the ticket. Texted the gentleman that owns that Cole a while back.
He's lowered his price since then, but sounded very earnest about the condition of his boat, & Bernard Enterprises, who he says maintained the boat, is totally legit, so I guess I gotta check it out now.
Cole made a pretty good hull from what I gather. I know a few folks around had them when I was a kid......

That Rogers is a really clean boat. Pretty cool, no doubt. The owner definitely is paying attention to details on the restore.
For me, at least at this point, I am looking for something more original. Original gelcoat, stock seating arrangement. If this was restored back to a 70's era look, especially with the BBC & reworked pump, I'd be all over it.
My budget has increased to around 10K, so hoping that will expand the range of available rigs.
Been looking at CL everyday, NoCal, SoCal, Arizona, anywhere I would be o.k. driving to see something.
It seems though, that the quality of boats for sale, at least in the 18'-19' range, was better during the summer?

You have a great budget for an older, great condition boat.
The only problem you may have in finding one is, most have been re-done or are in rough shape.
Not to say that you won't find one.
Maybe, keep an open mind to one that has good gel but may need some interior or mechanical work.
I think that is very possible with your budget.

I do think you are right. It's a bit like catching smoke.
Your advice on prioritizing makes sense. Drove up to Mariposa to see the first boat on my list, a 76 Miller Ski Jet, I think mentioned on the forum a few weeks back, had a killer hull & gelcoat, minor fixable blemishes, original interior no cracks or rips. Needed mechanical work, probably at least a engine overhaul, for sure a valve job, & some pump work. My budget was about 1/2 of what it is now , & didn't think I would have the 4 or 5k to get the boat reliable. I passed & am kicking myself (literally, and you know how hard that is to do) ever since.
Also, hesitated on a Hondo Pantera t-deck I saw in Parker. First guy on the scene. Beautiful, well taken care of, almost original boat, a bit over my budget at the time. Got back the owner a week later & it was already snatched up.
For sure, finding a real nice classic is an adventure....

It's a MSD with a blaster ss coil... I'm an off-road guy so that explains the wiring harness and tidiness.

Still looking.
Kinda narrowed down my criteria:
Roger Bonneville 18' or 19' TR. Original gel, interior, running gear in excellent condition. BBC or BBF. Berkeley. Turnkey boat.
I now have a budget of 10K. Got the cash & ready to deal. Could go a bit higher for the right boat…
Anyone out there have something that fits the bill?

The 18's and 19's have completely different bottoms, but that might not be a concern, both are good.
Not sure how you're going to use the boat. From the cockpit stand point. That foot difference in overall length is all in the back seat.
That being said, if you plan using the back seat, I'd stick to a 19' TR.
Unless you go to an 18' Super Cyclone (flat deck) you'll get the back seat back.
The 18' Super Cyclone and 18' Bonneville share the same bottom.
When Roger made the bubble deck it took 6" or 8" out of the cockpit.

The 19' TR would be my first choice, a bit harder to come by, though.
Going to use as a family boat, although a pretty small family, just me & the wife, a couple friends once & a while. Back seat is important, but don't need a ton of room.

Saw that boat in person a few weeks ago. It's at JP Marine in Lakeside. Real nice original condition hull & interior. Not 'pristine' as the copy states, but probably close to as good as it gets.
FYI: He wants 10K without power. A bit over my budget, but might work for someone who has a BBC sitting around…. ;)

No didn't buy. I am talking with the owner, getting some background on the current condition of His Rogers TR, & the work he has had done to it since he purchased it in 2014.
Seems like he started with a real nice boat. It had some cracks in the gel (on the freeboard around where the gas tanks are) that he had repaired correctly, + got the hull all cut & buffed. Professional work done on the pump.
cut out the gas tanks & reset them to be more removable. Sounds like he went through just about everything else & repaired or replaced. Guages, cables, carpet, etc.
The 460 is in pieces, though. Apparently some of the machine work on the block & heads has done, parts for the internals purchased, it that sounds like as far as he is going down that road.
I am trying to figure out, whether what he might want for the hull/pump, the cost of getting the 460 together, a trip out to Houston to inspect it, either shipping or driving it back 1,500 or so miles is going to somehow fit in my budget.
It looks, as of this moment, that that boat might be out of my reach financially, but, ya never know….

I was thinking 76 Bonneville may have bought it from his post but everything you said is the same thing my cousin was told. He had a guy go look at it and it is straight but when he got serious about buying it... the guy didn't want to sell it less the engine but the engine isn't put together and then some of the parts were missing for the engine.

The owner texted me a bunch of pics last night, including pics of the boat at the shops that did the gelcoat repairs & pump work, + descriptions of the work done. It all looks pretty legit.
Even though the hull & rigging look pretty complete, and in good condition, it is a project. The engine being torn down is an issue. Without confirmation that all the parts he bought for the internals are all there & correct, it's a bit of a question mark.
I would think that he would sell the boat without the engine but it seems like he would looking for a bit too high of a price to make it a good deal. I mean, the 460 isn't worth that much on it's own in it's current state, so essentially he's selling the boat without power.....

Yeah, It seemed like a pretty sweet boat. Traded a couple of e-mails with the owner & se sent a couple of pic's (of the transom & pump) that weren't in the CL ad. Looked real clean & was definitely garaged & covered.
The color scheme didn't do too much of me & being that is was an 18' & not a TR, the price seemed a bit too high.
Whoever ended up with it go a real nice float.

The engine is a mondello built olds 455 with tunnle ram intake with dual holly 650's and has a berkley 12jb pump with a place diverter and wedge plate. Also has full custom stitch craft interior and 2 way marine pioneer speakers. It needs some minor fiberglass repairs on the exterior of the hull but the floor and stringers are perfect!! Hi all,
Finally picked up my first float a couple of weeks ago! Went with the 1982 Rogers TR that Joe Podowski (JP Marine) was offering. His personal rig. Bought the boat with a n/a BBC that he had at the shop instead of the TT power plant. Joe is a pretty good guy. I came up with a punch list of stuff I wanted for the re-power, including a couple of minor repairs & he took care of all the items I requested without adding to the purchase price…. Overall I'm pretty stoked with what I ended up with. Doing some tinkering of my own on the BBC. If all goes well, we'll be getting it wet sometime in April….
