2 fresh 1600 single port heads with valve covers. 150

Generator for vw. 25

Oil fill for vw. 10

2 old school stock vw exhaust. 20 each

Bunch of single port heads that look okay just need cleaning. Make offer

Type 1,2 and 3 gear boxes are the same for the most part. The differences are the gear ratios, axle length and brake parts. Type 3s have bigger drums,  normally have 3.88 ring gears and .084 foth gear. Type 2 boxes will normally have a 4.12 or sometimes 4.37 ring gear with .089 fouth gear and sometimes they have reduction gear boxes depending on the year.. A type 1 box could have any of those gear combos with smaller brakes and no reduction gear box. I know a little bit about vw's :-)

the Beaveretriever is right.  as far as the gearboxes goes...it can be used in any bug, bus or type 3 (squareback, fastback, etc).  some prefer the bigger(wider brake shoe) to the stock units in earlier bugs.  also these you can remove drum without removing axle nut.  id say brakes may be more desirable...or what helps these sell.  type 3 stuff is getting harder to come by.  the tranny themselves...35-50 bucks each as a core. they could be good...but wont know until installed in car....besides having metal chunks in gear oil....might be able to find a buyer between 100-250$....maybe.  markets soft right now.

Beaveretriever are you still into VWs??

im sending you a pm...

Thanks for the info guys. I'm new to the vw scene and trying to learn more and more about them and the parts I have. I bought a 68 baja project with an fo block 1300 cc. But doing a little research I found this motor to be a 50 horse with 1600 single port heads. Is this correct ? Also my bug has a wide 5 in the rear and a four lug in the front. Now I tried taking a four lug drum and putting it in the rear but the axle is not long enough to put the nut on. Now can I put a wide 5 up front ?

The trans in your car is a short axle trans the four lug drum is for a 67 68 long axle trans. you can put the early ball joint five lug drums on the front I have a set that have studs in them I will part  with

The 4 lug stuff in the rear started 68 and newer. There are spacers that you can remove/add in the rear to get back to 4 lug. The wide 5 stuff is on pre 68 cars. Like 67 and older. What tranny do you have in the car? If its an irs box it was changed. 68 should have swing axles. The front im not sure if you can change ball joint to link pin drums. You might be able to with different bearings and races.

Edit:

Actually you can change the drums because 66-67 type 1 are ball joint wide five

"The front im not sure if you can change ball joint to link pin drums. You might be able to with different bearings and races."

beaveretriever has the answer.  you may be able to swap drums up front....as long as bearing races match.  if not, youll have to buy some to make it work.  someone at one point either swapped transaxles from drum to drum...or swapped axles and brake assemblies only.  tell you what, that type 3 trans you have will bolt right up and youll have your 4 lug pattern all the way around, with better rear brakes.  which is better for bajas in the dirt.  its very much a direct swap.  assuming your running a 12v system, with 12v starter/flywheel.

as far as the motor, sure, people have done similar combos many times.  still, youd be better off with a legit 1600...dual port, single port if you have to...they work fine as well.  dual port keeps more options open for future performance mods.   there is a single port following..., theres just more for dual port. 1500 engine can be bumped up to 1600 with zero machine work.  simply  change pistons and cylinders.  easier said than done....but really not difficult, you dont even have to get into the case(block).  WAIT, you do have an 1835 long block.  if its a single port....swap it too!   all external stuff...cooling tin, dist., generator/altenator...will swap directly over.  may have to tune carb a little for bigger engine....but not too much.  if its dual port....you can get a stock dual port manifold and carb and run it.  or dual carb set up for a little more giddy up.  later, if you want...you can go up to 1914 from 1835....again with no machine work.
good luck

The 1300cc is a 40hp motor and the only things that are the same is the fan shroud. The rest of the tin will not work. The 1500cc motor isn't s good starting point only because there are no cam bearings and the strokes are different which means a skinny motor. So exhaust will not fit either will tin to a 1600cc. 1600cc are what just about everyone builds good street motors from. A 1600 can only go to a 1641 with out machine work. If you have a 1835 (69mm crank, 92 barrels) you are done unless you do machine work. The next size pistons and barrels are 94mm and they do not fit in the 92mm bore. You can swap 90.5 and 94, 85.5 and 87, but thats all. If you have an 1835 long block, single port. Change the heads and manifold. Use a 30 or 34 pict carb and you will be fine.

I'm pretty sure it's a 12 volt system. Didn't they come with a 12 volt stock in 68 ? I have a dual carb set up for a single port with solex 32's I believer with thee original stock dual carb air box but they need to be rebuilt.

The 1835 is a single port motor and this is all that's there. Theirs no tin no generator or distributor

I have a set of dual port heads that I can have built to put on the 1835. I don't have any dual port manifolds though. Would an 1835 be a good street motor though ? I plan on using the baja as a dd for a while and using it on family trips to the desert as well.

As far as my trans in there now I'm not sure if it's an irs or not. How can I tell ?

I'm trying to decide whether I want to run four lug and buy the adapter for the rear or change the front to wide 5. I can get a pair of the adapter to go from wide five to four for 25 bucks brand new but a lot of the baja wheels are wide 5. Does anyone have some baja rims and tires there looking to sell ? I'm in the market for some

I think aa pistons make a 88 mm slip in piston now and all new 90.5 mm have the same skirt as a 92 so if you want yo run a 90.5 you have to have your case cut for a 92 but you get more cylinder wall and I think you can have the skirts on a 94 milled down to the same as a 92 but then you have a thin cylinder wall in the case as for the drums I have a 71 with a IRS trans and a ball joint beam and it has wide five drums all the way around the back are early five lug swing axle the fronts are 66 ball joint the backs have to run a axle spacer for any IRS or long axle swing axle a four lug rear drum will not work on a short axle swing trans the drum is to wide I would put five lug on the front of yours I have a set that I will do some trading with you. There's all kinds of swapping you can do with vw and Porsche you just have to find out who has done it

(I believe all info to be true but not claiming it to be fact)

so.  in the pic of 1835...you have cylinder tin, pulley tin, and front tin....by flywheel.  not sure if you have the pieces that go underneath.... cant tell in pic.  your missing oil cooler, fan shroud, generator, dist....and proly a few other things.  also looks like the stock linkage for type 3 dual carbs.  which you can use if you have them.  may need taller manifolds tho, not sure.  with dual port heads you mention....besides machining them to accept bigger cylinders, should work for you.  a stock dual port carb set up will also work....not the highest performing....but will be fine once tuned.  if you look at the trans you have sitting on ground...that you sent a pic of, then look at the one mounted in car....should look just about identical, focus on the axles.  this is a swing axle trans.  and irs trans will have what looks like bellows....cv boots...one close to trans the other by the wheel.

top one IRS trans.
bottom pic is swing axle.

Hey bud,
so finally caught up with scat engine builder. Hey quoted me 350$ + parts.
You'll get a fresh motor. That's for a long block. He does solid work and he stands by his product. I've got a few motors from him, an 1835 as well.
Turn around time is about a month depending on scats work orders.

Hey thanks for the info bud. I'm gonna be trying to get that motor built maybe in the next month. Gotta save up some coin since starting the new job. I appreciate the help

That's one awesome looking Willis. I like the custom work on that thing. 5500 is kinda high but it sure is cool

Nice ride.  I'm a VW guy and always will be.  Just have to say all that custom build and still a stock 1600 motor.  Put a 2276 in that thing and make it rip.  If the motor was as custom as the car I would be all over it.  Good luck on the sale.
