Millerton Vs. Bass Lake?
« on: August 18, 2009, 09:42:43 PM »
Hey guys,
Planning on a week long vacation at one of these two lakes. I'll be heading up there next Tuesday and was wondering what the water levels are like at each? I have never been to either...probably hit up both but was wondering if anyone has been up recently and has a preference. Any pictures would also be greatly appreciated. -CenCalCruiser

I'd go Bass Lake if you're going for a week, beautiful scenery, good water. Great camping. Great lake. Millerton, not so much. Bass Lake is down about 10' from full, Millerton is down about 40'.

Neither lake will be crowded after Labor Day.

CenCalCruiser,  What kind of boat and are you taking it ?

Bass lake is one of the nicest lakes around, but if you have a loud/fast boat forget about it !!  Not to mention you will need to buy a Bass lake permit (price based on HP).  You have to launch and immediately go to the Sheriff island for inspection and to get the permit (good for one season).

Millerton is ugly and full of idiots !!  But bigger.

My recommendation would be Shaver lake.  Nice lake, nice scenery, nice places to camp.  Get a hold of Mark (Sanger Pete).  He has a cabin up there (Shaver) and can give you the best info.

Hey Jeff, I was just typing when you posted up.

CenCal,
Like propless said, I would suggest you consider Shaver Lake--similar temps, scenery, fresh air to Bass Lake, but better camping and no launch fees. During the week, there are normally very few boats other than the fishermen. I am planning to spend next week up there working on my Sanger flat bottom project. If you have any questions, give me a call.

Not sure of the actual miles, but its about the same distance as Bass lake (maybe a bit less  :-\).  If you've been to Sierra Summit you drove right past it, a few miles above the 4 lane section of road on the right.  Its not the lake you can see from Sierra Summit, thats Huntington (also nice, but very cold and higher altitude).

About 40 miles from my house in Clovis--probably 5-6 miles farther from the HWY 41 exit on HWY 99 in Fresno--it'll take right at an hour towing a boat. Anyone else interested in coming up? We'll have a BBQ at my place one evening that week.

Oooo.....too bad. I heard Pine Flat was down to about 25%, and when it's 100* at PF, it'll be in the low 80s at Shaver. Have a good time, but I'm still going up to Shaver for the week--anyone else want to get away for a couple days?
