Good luck Frank, if the wind doesn't come up it can be a fun lake, but the wind does come up, and you get no warning, it's just BAM windy and whitecaps on the water.

We did whitecaps at Temple this year! Thankfully, Nordie was there and said "We gotta go.....NOW" when he looked at the sky. We were well on our way when the wind and footers and better started.

Wasn't so bad following the daycruisers in on their wakes, but I was really concerned as I have little to NO freeboard in the Pickle boat! Nordie was in much better shape than me that day!

In Moo,  I wouldn't be too worried. Be a rough ride is all. Pickle would sink on her own pretty quickly.....I now KNOW why there's 2 bilge pumps in that thing! Not a novice boat, Which is, at best, what I am!  ;D

Ray

Whitecaps, Lil Jet Boats...........Can get exciting!

Whitecaps are when the water gets really, really rough from the wind, looks like the ocean, I've seen Isabella have 4' chop in a matter of minutes.

i have had to drive through them puppies several times! its like being on a skateboard in a halfpipe...gets hairy, but with some throttle finess not all that bad! rollers and whitecaps are totally different in my eyes....cause rollers are rollers, and whitecaps kinda remind me of pyramids...the just point up, and then break! guess thats my opinion behind it, both suck regardless

The wind will usually start blowing around noon.  It always seems to come from the dams.  When it does start, it doesnt stop.  Get the boat off the water and head to The "Shady Lane" bar on Lake Isabella blvd.

i live about hald hour from isabella. the winds up here have been nuts for the last week or so and they are saying its not going to stop this weekend. and it is cold as hell. this sucks. it is supposed to be nice by now out here.

anyway i can keep ya posted on the weather up here if ya want. and ya isabella is cool but the winds pick up often and makes boating no fun. the last two times i was out there i was stuck on the beach and i have a miniday.

will do. like i said it is cool if the wind stays down. once the summer sets in the wind is not as common. right now when the weather is changing from cold to hot it gets pretty windy in these parts.

Im with Nordie... roller/whitecaps totally different. Rollers are kinda fun with a little throttle finess. Whitecaps...suck...better to just point straight and stab it! Stay above them!

It's low, been low for a loooooong time. Even with all the rain/snow we've gotten this winter, the Corps of Engineers is doing repairs to the dam so they have kept the level low. It's still a good sized lake, just watch out for trees, and the wind.

You mean the "Oildale Riviera" ? I hate the wind, and I've yet to go to itchybelly and not have the wind come up and fock up the lake. Plus the canyon sucks to trailer a boat through. Piru was nice, great day out of the house and on the water. You missed it NB

I don't want to harsh your buzz or water down your hopes of a good time for Memorial day but, I want to give you my honest evaluation of Lake Isabella:

It SUCKS.

I live about 45 minutes from there and about 4 HOURS from the River. To go for even a day trip, I would rather drive to the River than drive to Isabella. It is a beautiful lake when the sun is out for about the first two hours of the day then almost always, the wind picks up and it sucks. Be glad you are not taking your boat there.

Just to tell some of your 50 buddies that are going to boat, the southwest 1/3 of the lake is very shallow and there are trees everywhere. Be careful and I suggest you stay out of there. Same with the extreme end of the south east tip. Trees everywhere.

Just to make things clear I will rate Boating on Lake Isabella on a scale of 1-10:

Negative 26!

new to jetboating here, but very familiar with isabella lake,i have property and a trailer with lot and live there off and on,raised on that lake every summer fishin and huntng.its a nice laqke from early morn til bout noon to maybe 2 pm if your lucky, many boats get in trouble when that wind picks up,it very dangerous whitecaps.when lake is low there are trees stickin out towards the back all over, just be careful,gd fishing though.for jetboats id stay close to dam area, have ur fun early and relax the rest day when the wind starts, have seen days with little to no wind, but rare.its a big lake.as for the kern river,be careful tubing, many drownings every year.stay out of the rapids.lots of under current that sucks u under and hold u there, not trying to scre anyone, ive swam that river most my life, just be carefull.especially if u dont know it.my family lives there and im always there, lived there for couple yrs also.so take advice and have fun.its a grat lake for jetskis though, anything that wont sink lol.other boats are fine as well, just jets and flatbottoms dont need to be on it when wind starts.unless u wanna sink it,i dont care how carefull u are, when them whitecaps come over the side of ur boat one after another so fast, there nothing u can do,ive witnessed it many times fishing.other than that, early morn is awesome for boating, smooth as glass.enjoy your trip, take a gold pan kern has alot of flower and small flake gold and its alot of fun to pan and see color.
