Umm GT, Shaver is not on the road to Yosemite. You can get there from that road but I wouldnt recommend it in a family truckster (great sportbike road though  ;D).  Eather way, you have to drop way back down into the valley and climb back up the mountains. Lakes that are close to the road to Yosemite (via 41), Millerton, Hensley, Bass lake.

76, you will like it up there .  Its a nice lake and a very relaxing place.  Get ahold of Mark (Sangerpete), he has a cabin up there and spends lots of time up there.  If you want to take a short trip one day head farther up the hill to Huntington lake, also very nice.  ;)

BTW, dont feed the bears !!!  ::) ;D

Yeah, I actually mis spoke...We were shooting for Kings Canyon N.P....Yosemite came up because the wifeepoo has never been...I know. I feel like a slacker hubby...

I believe Shaver is between us and Kings canyon...But been a while, thanks for looking out. 8) I am creating an itinerary right now...Just sort of an experiment.

Well not really,  Kings Canyon is hwy 180, Yosemite is hwy 41, Shaver is hwy 168. You need to drop back down into the valley and climb back up the hills to get from one to the other. Unless you really know the back roads, most are very tight and twisty.  Shaver is kinda in the middle of the two.  Pineflat is (kinda) on the way to Kings Canyon, but its not much in the way of scenery.

Not really sure on the lake patrol, believe it or not I've never gone up there with one of my boats. Mark (sangerpete) would be the one to ask about that.  I do know the roads up there though, some epic sportbike style backroads up there.  >:D

Well you gotta remember for the most part its pretty quiet up there and most of the visitors are spending time AWAY from the bar.. That leaves the locals. Nothing too scary until you hit the "Short Horn" after about midnight. Its a single wide mobile home turned into a bar right behind the gas station in town. Right near the pizza place. Out of like 15 trips there, atleast 10 ended up back at the trailer saying "What the hell just happened". These are a sneaky sort of people, always leave the banjos at home so you cant hear em comin.

We just got back from this area last night.  Funny as hell that I am reading this now.  Spent a week with a friend and her family doing all kinds fun stuff.  Her husband spent most of two days fishing and gold panning with my two boys and all I had to do was keep the beers cold.   I gotta run now but I'll try to post some pics later if I can get them out of the camera.   Good times for sure . . .

How did I miss this one--I guess spending too much time up at Shaver. I'm planning to spend most of August up there, and just commute down to Fresno a couple days a week as necessary. The lake is full, the water is great, and the air is cool (lows 50*, highs 80s) and clean. Although there are a lot of boats on the weekends, during the week it is mostly aluminum fishing boats.

I was going to put up some pics, but there are a bunch on the Shaver Lake facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/ShaverLake?v=wall&ref=ts

Also, I noticed that the logger jamboree is on the weekend of August 14/15.

Give me a call--maybe we can meet up.

Never made it to Shaver.  We fished and panned the Merced river where even GT couldn't run.  We hiked a bunch of places up towards Mammoth pools (now that's where I want to take the "little" boat.  We hung out nekkid at Devil's slide near Bass Lake.  We even took some of the casino's money down below Coarsegold (friggin' nice rooms at that place if you can't/shouldn't drive home   >:D )    I am so tired of going to bars up there and finding NO action.   We actually plan to try finding some bar shinanigans in Mariposa next time.   I did get quite an education from the bartender at The Oaks about prison tatooing though.
I think I saw a mini boat for sale up there that either SD or someone on another site had posted for sale.   It is baby blue and looks like a 1950's peddle car with 57 Chevy wings on the back.   Saw a couple others for sale cheap and a couple real $$$ ones down at the bottom of the hill.

Just curious as to the jamboree, what is it, and where ???   Mark--76Nordic
I think it is a competition for all the loggers--sawing, splitting, etc. Here is the link to the SL Chamber of Commerce.

I love the Northfork loggers jamboree.. Id imagine its about the same. Everything from axe throwing to hot saws. Its alot of fun and a great place to drink cold beer. As far as bars in Mariposa?! Theres 3. Ones a scary little hole in the wall, ones full of old timers talkin about the good ol days and then theres the Miners Inn bar.. Its tiny but sometimes a good time. Might get weird looks from the locals. Last time I went there was 2 Easters ago, ended up in jail. I keep my distance now. I guess you can say that Im the local bar pro. No wonder I have no money for boats and cant keep an ol lady..  :-\  Ill be riding the Harley up to Shaver this weekend since my Reno plans just went down the drain.
