Hey whats going on, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. So i bought a boat a few days ago,1976 eliminator ford 460 berkly pump. It runs fine on land both idle and trottled up with h2o hooked up. I to it to the lake today to see how it would run in some real water. It starts just fine, idles fine, but then when i go to give it gas it sputters and then dies. I did mess around mostly trottling it a bit and it kind of became a little more responsive but ultimately died. I have bought new fuel lines and fuel filter, have yet to install them. The gas oil and filter are brand new, the boat has not been run for 4yrs. I am thinking that maybe I need to change the plugs and wires and maybe the carb as well or at least clean the crap out of it. I will be chaning the fuel lines and filter friday. Any ideas.

my 1976 460 does the same thing, sort of. i have narrowed it down to a distributor problem.

If it's sat 4 years, did you drain the tanks, new gas? Dirt clogging the pickup tubes or hoses?
Other than that, I had a kinda similar problem with my BBC in Pickle. It had sat a couple years also. Was a combination of bad vacuum leaks, and dizzy issues. Rebuilt another carb for it, all new intake gaskets, the HEI dizzy drove me nuts (replaced everything in it, still no good) so I replaced it with a Unlilite. Runs out just fine now! :)

Come on guys back to the basics here!
Find out what kind of carb you have...hopefully it's a holley i bet she is all gummed up! Second i've seen this issue several times with motors that need more timing advance...verify what kind of distributor you have! Points will work just fine...maybe the points are bad...also if you can use an electric fuel pump and cycle the fuel from the tanks through the fuel filter see if there's crud or water in the tanks....you might be buying alot of fuel filters! A member of this site did this exact thing transfering fuel back n forth from each tank...mostly of all ask lots of questions, use the search tool, and we like to see pictures!

when i bought my boat it sat for 2 years.. it stared up but when i hit the throttle it died.. i found out it was to accelerator pump in my holley carb... the gas gumbed up and the needle got stuck... i rebuild the carb, new gas, and it hasnt happened since....

ok guys thanks for all the info. i cleanded to carb, changed the fuel filter and lines, checked and adjusted the timing, and the boat is running 100% better. i put it in the lake yesterday hoping it would run better, and it did. i actuly got to cruise the lake i was super stoked. I do have a manual fuel pump that i will be changing soon. also i will get some pics up soon

Turn the 4 or 2 corner adjusting screws out a half or so , sounds like a lean situation.
