Title: 1978 Ford 460 oil dipstick length???
Post by: jonesieboy on April 09, 2016, 07:21:34 AM
I just built up my Ford 460 and the machine shop tossed my orig. oil dipstick. The sheath is on the front of the motor just above impeller cover. Does anyone know how long the dipstick should be???

What oil pan and capacity.

Is there oil in it yet?

Hint: a ten quart pan does not hold ten quarts.

I have the same engine with a regular oil pan. I can check the length for you in the morning, if you like.

Shadow, Great sounds good, I would appreciate that.

GT, I have a 6 Qt. Pan full of break in oil.

If it's full,  shove a welding rod  (or a straightened wire coat hanger) down the tube and measure it.

Might be oversimplification,  but it will work.......

Leave it off an inside boat... put a vacuum plug over the spout as it will eliminate the leak/drip.

Sorry this took so long, been on the road with work. I measured the dipstick length at 18 and a quarter inches from the top of the cap to the tip of the dipstick.
