Just picked up this Hondo for my Dad. Pretty fast and alot of fun! Supposed to be a 427 but there are no #'s on the block in front of the head. Are there any other visual indicators?
Thanks

There should be casting numbers on the top behind the left cylinder head that will help.
I'll try to find the web site that has information on casting numbers.

Thats the one I was looking for ;D

Just an FYI, the crank determins a 427, you can use a 454 block ;)
-
Very true
If you didn't build it, it's all a guess anyway ;D

Thanks for the site, I'll check it out.
Yea, What I was hoping to find was #'s to determine if this were a factory 427. Then I could find the internal parts and hp info.
Hey HD, what gears, prop, hp, speeds are you runnin' I would really like something to compare to. V-drives are Bitchen! I cruise at 1800 rpm / 25 mph. 4500 rpm / 59 mph. Wide open I dont know yet, I have both hands full and blurry vision! can't see the GPS.

Well, the gears I dont know. I talked to Casale at Irvine last year, said they can run the serial numbers. Talked to Jerry at v-drive videos, said he would bet 22's. The prop, I dont know It's a 3 blade 12". Best I can figure I'm looking for a 11, 11 1/4-15 two blade. HP, I dont know. It's a .030 454 with two 1050's a 671 10% over, 990 heads with crane rollers, cam I dont know, TRW 8:1 pistons, 4 bolt block, dimple rods (guess) and steel crank with a Dooley 14 qt pan. It also has a two speed Powerglide. In this thread:

There is video of me running next to Nordie in his Spectra 21', He said he was tachinng 4500, I was taching about 2000- 2500. As for speed, the onlything I have to remotely compare to Is at Parker We ran next to Ralph in his 70 MPH family boat, said we ran away from him in the chop with cav plates all the way down. Like you said, shit gets blurry after that. I always try to see the boost gauge, kinda behind the steering wheel, kinda bouces up around 6-8, tach needle about straight up 5000 or so, I dont hold it there long. I tell the ole lady to watch the gauges but usualy her feet go to the dash and she just hangs on. We need to borrow a GPS w/ memory. Sorry not much help. V-drives are a kick in the pants and cant be beat as far as looks. Lets see some pics of that ride of yours. hdriderth@yahoo.com Shit your in Needles, I'm in vegas, lets hook up. Been wanting to check out Moabi in a week or so, Or Big Bend, just north of Avi. I talked to the guy I got the boat from, original owner, and the guy who bult the motor, Phil Stock, didnt get much info as they're getting up there in years. They freshened the motor/trans once and it basicaly sat around for years after that. I went thru everything after that.

This is a 427 Chevy, right? Well, if it is, my 427 truck block has 7.0L down by the oil pan rail, about half way back, on the starter side of the block. And it also has TRUCK 12 upside down, above the oil filter. Also the block number is on the back of the block, above the flywheel.

Flat bottoms scare me I'm new to this and try to keep it idiot proof. ::)
I believe the 427's balancer does not have a counterwieght on it. feel the inside lip of the backside of the balancer.Should not have any lumps. The 427 is internally balanced.

Thanks for the good info.
The block is a 454
The balancer is not weighted.
I'll send you an e-mail Terry

Thought I was joking about the 454 thing didn't you? :sly: Both my 427's were 454 blocks with LS7 cranks...Had at one time five 427 steelies, just had to use em up! IMO they make the best jetboat engines ever, a big block that runs like a small block, you can turn the crap out of them....
Good luck, cool ride, but still scary :screwy:

Cool! I thought that the 427 was a rare combo. what kind of rpm's were they good to? any markings on the BB heads that identifies them? A really nice runnin' little motor.
I've got a fresh 454 .30 over with a 671 that spun my AA berkley to 6000 rpm. and dyno'ed to 7000 @ 744HP with room to go. I'm thinking that it will run nice in a V-drive.
-
Larry, the numbers on the heads are under the valve covers. They made the 427 for about 5-6 yrs, approx 1965 to '70ish without looking it up.

Used to turn an "A" impeller in a 18' Renegade at 6500, with two 600's on a ram, sounded real pissed, too much compression though, 11.5:1, got fuel at the airport.

Huh. :screwy: It requires 800 hp to spin a Berkeley AA to 6000 rpm. Unless I'm mistaken.

Nice looking Hondo!! Is it a runnerbottom or a sprint?
If there aren't any numbers on the block somebody took a grinder to it. Pull a valve cover and tell us which heads are on there. I have all the books if you need any ID help. 8)

Forgot ...congrats on an awesome boat!!

Cool, Will pull a cover this weekend.
Yep, 744 on dyno with the new smaller cam. My new 540 on the 944hp pulley is spining the same pump to 6700 rpm.
It's an MPD pump. Im hitting the rev at launch or when hitting it at mid rpm at so I need to have it worked on before installing the 1012 hp pulley.
Runnerbottom, T-deck, not a sprint. seller says it's a 5/8 but l haven't measured it.
Thanks Paul.
