454 Build Stupid question
« on: April 30, 2011, 10:43:15 PM »
I have rebuilt a 454, bored 30 over and new cam and my question is, I am getting ready to stab back into boat and i was running the oul pump with a drill to pressureize oil system and to makwe sure I am getting oil everywhere.  I have the valve covers off and I am not getting any oil up through the push rods and onto the lifters.  Is this normal???? I am getting oil in the filter and to the oil pressure sending unit and up in the valley under the intake... I would like to know before I put in boat and start and destroy it?  I konw it is a stupid question but I have never done this part of a rebuild before.

Keep running yer drill until it does. Takes awhile to get the lifters bled. Last time I did it on a chebbie was with Tdawg and I think it took somewhere quite north of a half an hour with a drill to get ALL the lifters pumped up

It's actually a very intelligent question, not many people prime their engines so carefully.

Every few minutes while the drill is running,, turn the engine over 90 degrees.  Are you running a hydraulic cam?

Yes. It is a hydrolic cam and I never thought of turning it over every so often.  I just dont want to put it in  and have to pull it back out. Thanks for the info and I will let you know what happens later.   :)

Go to Home Depot and rent a drill.   >:D     It can't be good for them.     Or borrow one from someone you don't like very much.

That is funny cause I left mine at work and my obnoxious neighbor was outside and I asked to borrow his. Let me say by the time I was done it was almost to hot to hold on to and had a funny smell and makes a noise now, hehehe.  After about a half hour and turning crank 90 degrees every once in a while I started to get the oil up through the push rods.  Hope to have the motor in next week and thanx for the advise. I will post picks of progress cause I konw how everyone like pics including me.  Why read when you can look at pictures.   ;D

Are you using the oil pressure primer fixture, that replaces the distributor? Or just a drill bit

Just a drill bit, well a long flathead screw driver with the handle taken off and put into the drill.  I need the longer ones cause the short thread on the Delco pl;ugs wont even start

If you are not using a regular priming tool that seals the oil galleys, not sure how you could get any oil to the pushrod?

When you buy spark plugs for a boat engine,, you basically need to go to the parts store knowing what you want,, all they can usually do there is look up by year and model.  You didn't give them the number of your old plugs, or take one with you?

I normally buy plugs one or two heat ranges colder than stock "street" plugs,, since a boat engine gets run harder.  Personally I use Autolite or NGK plugs.

as far as spark plugs it Depends on the year of the cylinder heads. Early heads take a long 3/4" reach plug and later heads use a short .460" reach with a tapered seat. I use r5673-7 ngks in my stuff for the later heads or an 8 with some compression or bottle. The early heads i use a b7es or b8es long reach. Also started using autolite racing ar3933 on the long reach stuff with good luck also. The autolite is a smaller 5/8 socket long reach plug. about a 1/4 inch shorter than the ngks. Also you can make an oil pump primer out of an old distributor that works quite well.

Cool. I have not had any experiance with BBC, I was a small block fan so I am learning a lot.  The numbers stamped on the heads say they are for a 396 and with the decent cam I got sounds good. I can t wait to start it up.
