Pulling the motor on Monday. Never done one before. Any advice to make this easy to do? Doesn't seem to hard to take it out.

So I started taking apart the easy things. Drain the oil-black. Spark plugs- no metal. Exhaust manifolds off. Valve covers off- little bit of milky oil sitting in the grooves by the valves.

Found the issue. Oil pump was going out and my crank bearings fried and my rod bearings as well. Now I need to get my crank machined.

Issue was that I was cruising and I got a lot of blow by coming from my breathers and loss my rpms. I couldn't plane. I could go to 1200 to keep my oil pressure in a safe spot.

I use Contemporary auto machine for everything. His name is Yo and he has been doing this for a very long time. However he is in Huntington Beach so may be a little far for you.

Valve Lift: .527/.553. I went with the Comp Cam Xtreme Marine 262H-12 .505/.515. I'm running a stock bore 454 with 396 heads.

Need more info on the build/boat-
What Heads/intake?
Compression Ratio?
What impeller in the pump? What pump?
What Exhaust? Looks like logs ans snails in your pic.
The Gen. V 's I've seen had peanut port heads, and NON Adjustable valvetrain (read: airflow limited), and will have to be converted to adjustable rockers for that cam.
Don't forget springs to match the cam.
Is ti OEM roller?
That cam needs more intake lift/duration and/or less exhaust lift/duration, IMHO.
With logs and snails, I'd shoot for 235*-240*(max) @ .050" to keep reversion under control.
I'd go with 781's or 049's or other large oval heads, Eddy Vic Jr Intake, 750 holley, comp cams 280AH (232*/237*, .547"/.547"),
Or XM270H (226*/236*, .544"/.547") or similar, but I won't use another 'flat' tappet cam...I'd go ROLLER.

Thanks for the info! I wish heads were in my budget, along with rollers, but I am sticking with what heads I have. I don't think I have the heads with the peanuts I believe they are rectangular . I will look when I get home in about 2 hrs.

So I made a pretty good size list of parts that I'll be getting from summit racing. I will be at a 464 when it's together. Fixed a spring in my distributor and Rebuilt my carb and today. I Can't wait to get this back on the water!

If you didn't buy the pistons yet,, I need to ask why you want to make the compression that low. Flat tops with 118cc heads are still about 8-1 compression, depending on deck height and gasket volume. I would consider making it more like 9-1 compression, still safe on pump gas but some additional power. Also, I normally would advice forged pistons rather than hypereutectics for a marine application.

I'm going with a dome piston. 9.6:1 ratio. Not buying that engine kit.

Got around to do the valve seals today. And I also assembled the high volume oil pump that I got. Not much wrenching time today but it's progress.

Cleaned up all the old gasket left on the heads today. Also took the block and pistons to the machine shop to get cam bearings put in and have my rods rebuilt with my new pistons.
