Looking for a wiring diagram for 454 1 wire alternator and hei distributor. I know I've seen it on here before but can't find it.

HEI needs one wire to the coil, one for the tach, they're labled.
One wire alternator, heavy gauge wire to the battery cable connection on the starter solenoid.
Don't get much easier than that.

Alternator doesn't go directly to the battery

So where does it go? Eventually, it does right to the battery.
Many times, boats used to have an as ammeter, this would institute a large red and a large orange wire all the way to the dash and back.
Probably what you have going on.

When I wired mine I ran a thick wire from battery to alternator, one jumper from alternator to where battery power connects to it, and the other runs to my distributor. It was pretty easy.

Yes it is a great idea and cheap way to save your starter.
Part of the reason for this is when your starting wire gets longer you end up not providing your starter solenoid with enough amps to properly hold the solenoid disk in against the contacts when cranking. This leads to burning the disk and under powering your starter eventually burning it out. By using the aux solenoid as close to the starter as possible you help to eliminate burning out your starter.
They actually make one the goes directly onto the starter.
Just my two cents worth.

I totally agree with this. When I worked for ThermoKing, the refers had starter problems as well and they installed a starter relay to cure starter failures. It's a waterproof relay. I put one on my boat and so far so good. You can actually buy them from TK Services. They have stores in Fontana, San Diego, and LA.

Has 4 wires.
1.ground (at relay mount)
2.battery power (at starter)
3.from ignition switch (S wire)
4.to S terminal on the starter.
Note: I mounted mine on the motor plate close to the starter. Makes the wires short and little to NO AMP loss
